Domains of invasion organelle proteins from apicomplexan parasites are homologous with the Apple domains of blood coagulation factor XI and plasma pre-kallikrein and are members of the PAN module superfamily
AbstractMicronemes are specialised organelles, found in all apicomplexan parasites, which secrete molecules that are essential for parasite attachment to and invasion of host cells. Regions of several microneme proteins have sequence similarity to the Apple domains (A-domains) of blood coagulation factor XI (FXI) and plasma pre-kallikrein (PK). We have used mass spectrometry on a recombinant-expressed, putative A-domain from the microneme protein EtMIC5 from Eimeria tenella, to demonstrate that three intramolecular disulphide bridges are formed. These bridges are analogous to those that stabilise A-domains in FXI and PK. The data confirm that the apicomplexan domains are structural homologues of A-domains and are therefore novel members of the PAN module superfamily, which also includes the N-terminal domains of members of the plasminogen/hepatocyte growth factor family. The role of A-domains/PAN modules in apicomplexan parasites is not known, but their presence in the microneme suggests that they may be important for mediating protein–protein or protein–carbohydrate interactions during parasite attachment and host cell invasion
Vitamin D and people with intellectual disability

It is widely appreciated that the elderly are at increased risk of vitamin D insufficiency, but it is less well known that people with intellectual disability are also at increased risk. OBJECTIVE: This article summarises the issues regarding vitamin D in people with intellectual disability, making recommendations about screening, management and follow up. DISCUSSION: The prevalence of intellectual disability in the Australian population has been estimated at just over 1%, implying that most general practitioners will care for several people with intellectual disability. The Earliest Near-infrared Time-series Spectroscopy of a Type Ia Supernova
We present ten medium-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio near-infrared
(NIR) spectra of SN 2011fe from SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility
(IRTF) and Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS) on Gemini North, obtained
as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project. This data set constitutes the
earliest time-series NIR spectroscopy of a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), with the
first spectrum obtained at 2.58 days past the explosion and covering -14.6 to
+17.3 days relative to B-band maximum. C I {\lambda}1.0693 {\mu}m is detected
in SN 2011fe with increasing strength up to maximum light. The delay in the
onset of the NIR C I line demonstrates its potential to be an effective tracer
of unprocessed material. For the first time in a SN Ia, the early rapid decline
of the Mg II {\lambda}1.0927 {\mu}m velocity was observed, and the subsequent
velocity is remarkably constant. The Mg II velocity during this constant phase
locates the inner edge of carbon burning and probes the conditions under which
the transition from deflagration to detonation occurs. We show that the Mg II
velocity does not correlate with the optical light-curve decline rate
{\Delta}m15. The prominent break at ~1.5 {\mu}m is the main source of concern
for NIR k-correction calculations. We demonstrate here that the feature has a
uniform time evolution among SNe Ia, with the flux ratio across the break
strongly correlated with {\Delta}m15. The predictability of the strength and
the onset of this feature suggests that the associated k-correction

Quasi-2D Confinement of a BEC in a Combined Optical and Magnetic Potential
We have added an optical potential to a conventional Time-averaged Orbiting
Potential (TOP) trap to create a highly anisotropic hybrid trap for ultracold
atoms. Axial confinement is provided by the optical potential; the maximum
frequency currently obtainable in this direction is 2.2 kHz for rubidium. The
radial confinement is independently controlled by the magnetic trap and can be
a factor of 700 times smaller than in the axial direction. This large
anisotropy is more than sufficient to confine condensates with ~10^5 atoms in a
Quasi-2D (Q2D) regime, and we have verified this by measuring a change in the
free expansion of the condensate; our results agree with a variational model.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figur
Local influence of boundary conditions on a confined supercooled colloidal liquid
We study confined colloidal suspensions as a model system which approximates
the behavior of confined small molecule glass-formers. Dense colloidal
suspensions become glassier when confined between parallel glass plates. We use
confocal microscopy to study the motion of confined colloidal particles. In
particular, we examine the influence particles stuck to the glass plates have
on nearby free particles. Confinement appears to be the primary influence
slowing free particle motion, and proximity to stuck particles causes a
secondary reduction in the mobility of free particles. Overall, particle
mobility is fairly constant across the width of the sample chamber, but a
strong asymmetry in boundary conditions results in a slight gradient of

The surface science of quasicrystals
The surfaces of quasicrystals have been extensively studied since about 1990. In this paper we review work on the structure and morphology of clean surfaces, and their electronic and phonon structure. We also describe progress in adsorption and epitaxy studies. The paper is illustrated throughout with examples from the literature. We offer some reflections on the wider impact of this body of work and anticipate areas for future development.

The “Worktivity” mHealth intervention to reduce sedentary behaviour in the workplace: a feasibility cluster randomised controlled pilot study
Background
Office work generally consists of high amounts of sedentary behaviour (SB) which has been associated with negative health consequences. We developed the “WorktivIty” mobile app to help office workers reduce their SB through self-monitoring and feedback on sedentary time, prompts to break sedentary time, and educational facts. The aim of this paper is to report the feasibility of delivering the Worktivity intervention to desk-based office workers in the workplace setting and describe methodological considerations for a future trial.
Methods
We conducted a three-arm feasibility cluster randomised controlled pilot study over an 8-week period with full time-desk based employees. Clustered randomisation was to one of three groups: Worktivity mobile app (MA; n = 20), Worktivity mobile app plus SSWD (MA+SSWD; n = 20), or Control (C; n = 16). Feasibility was assessed using measures of recruitment and retention, intervention engagement, intervention delivery, completion rates and usable data, adverse events, and acceptability.
Results
Recruitment of companies to participate in this study was challenging (8% of those contacted), but retention of individual participants within the recruited groups was high (81% C, 90% MA + SSWD, 95% MA). Office workers’ engagement with the app was moderate (on average 59%). Intervention delivery was partially compromised due to diminishing user engagement and technical issues related to educational fact delivery. Sufficient amounts of useable data were collected, however either missing or unusable data were observed with activPAL™, with data loss increasing at each follow up time point. No serious adverse events were identified during the study. The majority of participants agreed that the intervention could be implemented within the workplace setting (65% MA; 72% MA + SSWD) but overall satisfaction with the intervention was modest (58% MA; 39% MA + SSWD).
Conclusions
The findings suggest that, in principle, it is feasible to implement a mobile app-based intervention in the workplace setting however the Worktivity intervention requires further technical refinements before moving to effectiveness trials. Challenges relating to the initial recruitment of workplaces and maintaining user engagement with the mHealth intervention over time need to be addressed prior to future large-scale implementation.
