Cooling curves for neutron stars with hadronic matter and quark matter

    Get PDF
The thermal evolution of isothermal neutron stars is studied with matter both in the hadronic phase as well as in the mixed phase of hadronic matter and strange quark matter. In our models, the dominant early-stage cooling process is neutrino emission via the direct Urca process. As a consequence, the cooling curves fall too fast compared to observations. However, when superfluidity is included, the cooling of the neutron stars is significantly slowed down. Furthermore, we find that the cooling curves are not very sensitive to the precise details of the mixing between the hadronic phase and the quark phase and also of the pairing that leads to superfluidity.Comment: 19 pages, 25 figure

Identifying (subsurface) anthropogenic heat sources that influence temperature in the drinking water distribution system

    Get PDF
The water temperature in the drinking water distribution system and at the customers’ taps approaches the surrounding soil temperature at ca. 1 meter depth. Water temperature is an important determinant of water quality, since it influences physical, chemical and biological processes, such as absorption of chemicals, microbial growth and chlorine decay. In the Netherlands drinking water is distributed without additional residual disinfectant and the temperature of drinking water at the customers’ tap is not allowed to exceed 25 ºC. Routine water quality samples at the tap in urban areas have shown locations with relatively high soil temperatures compared to the expected modelled soil temperatures, which indicate so called ‘underground hot-spots’. In the last decades, the urban sub-surface is getting more occupied with various types of sub-surface infrastructures and some of these can be heat sources. A few recent studies tackle the anthropogenic sources and their influence on the underground, at coarse spatial scales. Little is known about the urban shallow underground heat profile on small spatial scales, of the order of 10 m × 10 m. Our research focuses on developing a method to identify and to localise potential underground hot-spots at −1.0 m at a small spatial scale. In this article we describe a method to find anthropogenic heat sources that influence temperature in the drinking water distribution system through a combination of mapping urban anthropogenic heat sources, modelling the soil temperature and extensive measurements in Rotterdam

OBJECTIVES: (1) Characterize serum (S) and urinary (U) steroid metabolites in complete CYP17 deficiency (cCYP17D); (2) analyze the relative 17α-hydroxylase (17OH) and 17,20-lyase (17,20L) activities in vivo; and (3) comparedata from the two most prevalent mutations in Brazil. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 20 genotyped cCYP17D patients from a previously reported cohort were homozygous for W406R or R362C; 11 controls were CYP17 wild types (WT). WT and cCYP17D patients had S and U samples drawn to measure: cortisol (F), corticosterone (B), deoxycorticosterone (DOC), 18OH-B, 18OH-DOC, and 17OHP; and tetrahydro (TH)-B, THA, THDOC, THF+5α-THF, TH-cortisone, androsterone, etiocholanolone, 5-pregnenediol, 17OH-pregnenolone and pregnanetriol. RESULTS: Compared to WT, cCYP17D patients had marked elevations of B, DOC, 18OH-B and 18OH-DOC, whereas 17OHP, F and adrenal androgens (AA) were reduced; U steroids parallel S findings. Metabolite ratios revealed that both 17OH and 17,20L activities were impaired in cCYP17D. There were nodifferences between W406R andR362C mutations. CONCLUSIONS: cCYP17D patients show parallel overproduction/overexcretion of 17-deoxysteroids, and marked reduction of F and AA. In addition to 17OH, 17,20-L activity was also impaired in cCYP17D. As mutações W406 e R362C apresentam achados semelhantes em S e U.Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Department of Medicine Division of Endocrinology and MetabolismUniversity of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Department of Clinical SciencesUniversity of Birmingham Division of Medical SciencesUNIFESP, Department of Medicine Division of Endocrinology and MetabolismSciEL

INTRODUCTION: The 1 mg dexamethasone suppression test (DxST) is widely used to screen Cushing's syndrome (CS) due to its high diagnostic accuracy. CS is an endocrine-metabolic disorder caused by hypercorticism, which is characterized by the absence of cortisol suppression in DxST. OBJECTIVE: To develop a radioimmunoassay (RIA) for the measurement of serum dexamethasone (Dx) to complement DxST. METHODS: Three rabbits were inoculated with dexamethasone-21-hemisuccinate-BSA in order to choose the best antibody. Serum Dx RIA was performed according to RE 899/2003 (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária [ANVISA]) regulations. Serum samples from 96 volunteers from Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) and Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo were analyzed, 67 of which were submitted to DxST and 29 were not. There were 12 patients with CS. RESULTS: The Dx antibody chosen showed good specificity. Intra- and interassay CV were < 20% with 93.8% accuracy and the lowest detection limit was 19.5 ng/dl. Serum Dx concentration was similar among both volunteers and CS patients (absence of cortisol suppression): 205 to 703 ng/dl and 174 to 661 ng/dl (95% CI), respectively. Values were undetectable among those that were not submitted to the test. Discussion: The anti-Dx antibody shows high specificity and reliability to quantify serum Dx in DxST. The Dx RIA presented reproducibility and reliability in the determination of serum Dx levels during DxST. CONCLUSION: The current RIA for serum Dx is accurate and reliable, which permits to establish a reference value range to substantiate DxST interpretation.INTRODUÇÃO: O teste de supressão com 1 mg de dexametasona (TSDx) é amplamente empregado no rastreamento da síndrome de Cushing (SC) dada sua elevada acurácia diagnóstica.
