The conduction pathway of potassium channels is water free under physiological conditions.

    Get PDF
Ion conduction through potassium channels is a fundamental process of life. On the basis of crystallographic data, it was originally proposed that potassium ions and water molecules are transported through the selectivity filter in an alternating arrangement, suggesting a "water-mediated" knock-on mechanism. Later on, this view was challenged by results from molecular dynamics simulations that revealed a "direct" knock-on mechanism where ions are in direct contact. Using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques tailored to characterize the interaction between water molecules and the ion channel, we show here that the selectivity filter of a potassium channel is free of water under physiological conditions. Our results are fully consistent with the direct knock-on mechanism of ion conduction but contradict the previously proposed water-mediated knock-on mechanism

OntoMathPROOntoMath^{PRO} Ontology: A Linked Data Hub for Mathematics

In this paper, we present an ontology of mathematical knowledge concepts that covers a wide range of the fields of mathematics and introduces a balanced representation between comprehensive and sensible models. We demonstrate the applications of this representation in information extraction, semantic search, and education. We argue that the ontology can be a core of future integration of math-aware data sets in the Web of Data and, therefore, provide mappings onto relevant datasets, such as DBpedia and ScienceWISE.Comment: 15 pages, 6 images, 1 table, Knowledge Engineering and the Semantic Web - 5th International Conferenc

Microplankton species assemblages at the Scripps Pier from March to November 1983 during the 1982-1984 El Nino event

    Get PDF
A semiweekly sampling program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier was begun in 1983 during an El Nino event. Microplankton data for March to November 1983 show a temporal sequence of species assemblages of the 24 important taxa, with a residence time of 1 to 4 weeks. From March to early September, the assemblages consisted of typical neritic taxa. From mid-September to mid-November, the presence of oceanic warm-wave species was associated with positive temperature anomalies characteristic of the El Nino condition. During the period studied numerical abundances were low

The swiss army knife of job submission tools: grid-control

    Get PDF
Grid-control is a lightweight and highly portable open source submission tool that supports virtually all workflows in high energy physics (HEP). Since 2007 it has been used by a sizeable number of HEP analyses to process tasks that sometimes consist of up 100k jobs. grid-control is built around a powerful plugin and configuration system, that allows users to easily specify all aspects of the desired workflow. Job submission to a wide range of local or remote batch systems or grid middleware is supported. Tasks can be conveniently specified through the parameter space that will be processed, which can consist of any number of variables and data sources with complex dependencies on each other. Dataset information is processed through a configurable pipeline of dataset filters, partition plugins and partition filters. The partition plugins can take the number of files, size of the work units, metadata or combinations thereof into account. All changes to the input datasets or variables are propagated through the processing pipeline and can transparently trigger adjustments to the parameter space and the job submission. While the core functionality is completely experiment independent, integration with the CMS computing environment is provided by a small set of plugins.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, Proceedings for the 22nd International Conference on Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physic

Dynamic modeling of three-phase upflow fixed-bed reactor including pore diffusion

    Get PDF
The dynamics of a three-phase upflow fixed-bed reactor are investigated using a non-isothermal heterogeneous model including gas–liquid and liquid–solid mass transfer and diffusion/reaction phenomena inside the catalyst. The partial differential and algebraic equations involving three integration variables (time and two space coordinates) are solved via discretization of the spatial coordinates coupled with the Gear method. For a multistep hydrogenation on a shell catalyst, the model exhibits significant effects of the external and above all internal resistance to hydrogen transfer but also non-trivial internal hydrocarbons concentration profiles. A simplified model is compared with the extended one and with experimental data in transient regime. In the investigated conditions—hydrocarbons in large excess—the diffusion of hydrocarbons appears to be actually not limiting, so that the simplest model predicts accurately the transient reactor behavior

Etablierung ausgewählter Arten zur Nachsaat in ökologisch bewirtschafteten Grünlandbeständen in Abhängigkeit von Nachsaattechnik und Standort

    Get PDF

Sulfited Tannin Capsules: Novel Stimuli-Responsive Delivery Systems

    Get PDF
Microcapsules of sulfited Acacia mearnsii tannin (AmST-MCs) were generated for the first time via the sonochemical method. Their stability profile was assessed and set in the general context of tannin microcapsules (TMCs) generated under the same experimental conditions. The analytical data gathered in this work indicate an excellent stability of TMCs over time as well as under high temperature and pressure, which is a major milestone toward the meaningful applications of TMCs in industrial, pharmaceutical, and biomedical applications in which sterilization of TMCs might be a prerequisite. Active release is shown to be efficiently triggered by varying pH and/or salinity, with different profiles for TMCs from sulfited and nonsulfited species. Surfactants also affect the stability of TMCs significantly, with effects eventually amplifiable by pH and the inherent kosmotropic and chaotropic characteristics of salt components in solutions

An analytical toolbox for fast and straightforward structural characterisation of commercially available tannins

    Get PDF
Both condensed and hydrolysable tannins represent versatile natural polyphenolic structures exhibiting a broad range of activities that could be exploited in various fields including nutraceutics, cosmesis, consumer care, household and pharmaceutical applications. Various tannins are commercially available nowadays for use in such application fields. We have analysed a representative selection of commercially available condensed and hydrolysable tannins for structural features and purity. Using a combination of quantitative31 P NMR spectroscopy, HSQC measurements, MALDI-ToF analyses, gel permeation chromatography and wet chemical analysis, detailed structural characterisations and descriptions were possible, allowing for verification and falsification of claimed structural features

    Quasiperiodic Modulated-Spring Model

We study the classical vibration problem of a chain with spring constants which are modulated in a quasiperiodic manner, {\it i. e.}, a model in which the elastic energy is ∑jkj(uj−1−uj)2\sum_j k_j( u_{j-1}-{u_j})^2, where kj=1+Δcos[2πσ(j−1/2)+θ]k_j=1+\Delta cos[2\pi\sigma(j-1/2)+\theta] and σ\sigma is an irrational number. For Δ<1\Delta < 1, it is shown analytically that the spectrum is absolutely continuous, {\it i.e.}, all the eigen modes are extended. For Δ=1\Delta=1, numerical scaling analysis shows that the spectrum is purely singular continuous, {\it i.e.}, all the modes are critical.Comment: REV TeX fil
