Method specific Cholesky decomposition : Coulomb and exchange energies

We present a novel approach to the calculation of the Coulomb and exchange contributions to the total electronic energy in self consistent field and density functional theory. The numerical procedure is based on the Cholesky decomposition and involves decomposition of specific Hadamard product matrices that enter the energy expression. In this way, we determine an auxiliary basis and obtain a dramatic reduction in size as compared to the resolution of identity (RI) method. Although the auxiliary basis is determined from the energy expression, we have complete control of the errors in the gradient or Fock matrix. Another important advantage of this method specific Cholesky decomposition is that the exchange energy and Fock matrix can be evaluated with a linear scaling effort contrary to the RI method or standard Cholesky decomposition of the two-electron integral matrix. The Lesser Antillean Iguana on St. Eustatius: A 2012 Population Status Update and Causes for Concern

To assess the status and current population densities of the endangered Lesser Antillean Iguana (Iguana delicatissima) on the island of St. Eustatius, we spent more than 80 h searching for iguanas and covered more than 63 km of trails and tracks — but found only 22 iguanas, for an overall average of 3.7 h per iguana. Overall population density was 0.35 iguanas per hectare, which represents 0.5–1.0% of densities documented elsewhere in healthy populations. Population densities have declined across all habitats since the last assessment in 2004. The lack of nesting sites and high iguana mortalities due to anthropogenic causes were the two core factors limiting recovery of iguanas on St. Eustatius. Our principle recommendation are to: (a) Train and equip border officials to prevent entry of mongooses and Green Iguanas from neighboring islands; (b) implement enforcement and upgrade protective legislation; (c) develop and maintain new additional nesting habitat, a measure that is both easy and inexpensive; and (d) establish a program to promote "iguana-friendly" gardens as the main means of reducing cumulative mortality. Finally, we propose the development of an in situ husbandry and breeding program to help bolster the overall recovery program, a move that also would benefit islanders by offering a relaxed setting in which they could better learn to appreciate this emblematic island species. &nbsp

Electron-lattice relaxation, and soliton structures and their interactions in polyenes

Density matrix renormalisation group calculations of a suitably parametrised model of long polyenes (polyacetylene oligomers), which incorporates both long range Coulomb interactions and adiabatic lattice relaxation, are presented. The triplet and 2Ag states are found to have a 2-soliton and 4-soliton form, respectively, both with large relaxation energies. The 1Bu state forms an exciton-polaron and has a very small relaxation energy. The relaxed energy of the 2Ag state lies below that of the 1Bu state. Convergence to stable laws for multidimensional stochastic recursions: the case of regular matrices

Given a sequence $(M_{n},Q_{n})_{n\ge 1}$ of i.i.d.\ random variables with generic copy $(M,Q) \in GL(d, \R) \times \R^d$, we consider the random difference equation (RDE) $$R_{n}=M_{n}R_{n-1}+Q_{n},$$ $n\ge 1$, and assume the existence of $\kappa >0$ such that \lim_{n \to \infty}(\E{\norm{M_1 ... M_n}^\kappa})^{\frac{1}{n}} = 1 . We prove, under suitable assumptions, that the sequence $S_n = R_1 + ... + R_n$, appropriately normalized, converges in law to a multidimensional stable distribution with index $\kappa$. ‘It would be okay if they came through the proper channels’: community perceptions and attitudes toward asylum seekers in Australia

Australia\u27s humanitarian programme contributes to UNHCR\u27s global resettlement programme and enhances Australia\u27s international humanitarian reputation. However, as the recent tragedy on Christmas Island has shown, the arrival of asylum seekers by boat continues to stimulate debate, discussion and reaction from the Australian public and the Australian media. In this study, we used a mixed methods community survey to understand community perceptions and attitudes relating to asylum seekers. We found that while personal contact with asylum seekers was important when forming opinions about this group of immigrants, for the majority of respondents, attitudes and opinions towards asylum seekers were more influenced by the interplay between traditional Australian values and norms, the way that these norms appeared to be threatened by asylum seekers, and the way that these threats were reinforced both in media and political rhetoric

Increased prevalence of sleep disturbances and daytime sleepiness in subjects with bronchial asthma: a population study of young adults in three European countries

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links fieldThe aim of this study was to investigate whether asthma is associated with decreased quality of sleep and increased daytime sleepiness. The study involved a random population of 2,202 subjects supplemented by 459 subjects with suspected asthma, aged 20-45 yrs. The subjects were from Reykjavik (Iceland), Uppsala and Göteborg (Sweden) and Antwerp (Belgium), and participated in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey. The investigation included a structured interview, methacholine challenge, skinprick tests and a questionnaire on sleep disturbances. Participants in Iceland and Sweden also estimated their sleep times and made peak expiratory flow (PEF) recordings during a period of 1 week. Asthma was defined as self-reported physician-diagnosed asthma with current asthma-related symptoms (n = 267). Difficulties inducing sleep (DIS) and early morning awakenings (EMA) were about twice as common, and daytime sleepiness 50% more common, in asthmatics compared with subjects without asthma. After adjusting for possible confounders, a positive association was found between asthma and: DIS (odds ratio (OR) = 1.8); EMA (OR = 2.0); daytime sleepiness (OR = 1.6); snoring (OR = 1.7); and self reported apnoeas (OR = 3.7). Allergic rhinitis, which was reported by 71% of subjects with asthma, was independently related to DIS (OR = 2.0) and daytime sleepiness (OR = 1.3). A significant correlation was found between the number of asthma-related symptoms and sleep disturbances (p < 0.001). Asthma is associated with decreased subjective quality of sleep and increased daytime sleepiness. Concurrent allergic rhinitis may be an important underlying cause of sleep impairment in asthmatic patients
