Determination of intercontinental baselines and Earth orientation using VLBI
A series of experiments was conducted during the last decade to explore the capability of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to measure the crustal and rotational motions of the Earth with accuracies at the centimeter level. The observing stations are those of NASA's Deep Space Network in California, Spain and Australia. A multiparameter fit to the observed values of delay and delay rate yields radio source positions, polar motion, universal time, the precession constant, baseline vectors, and solid Earth tides. Source positions are obtained with formal errors of the order of 0''.01. UT1-UTC and polar motion are determined at 49 epochs, with formal error estimates for the more recent data of 0.5 msec for UT1-UTC and 2 to 6 mas for polar motion. Intercontinental baseline lengths are determined with formal errors of 5 to 10 cm. The Love numbers and Earth tide phase lag agree with the commonly accepted values
Di-μ-iodido-bis[acetyl(4-methyl-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo[2.2.2]octane)(N-nitroso-N-oxidoaniline-κ2 O,O′)rhodium(III)]
The title compound, [Rh2(C6H5N2O2)2(C2H3O)2I2(C5H9O3P)2], contains a binuclear centrosymmetric RhIII dimer bridged by iodide anions, with respective Rh⋯Rh and I⋯I distances of 4.1437 (5) and 3.9144 (5) Å. The RhIII atom is in a distorted octahedral RhCI2O2P coordination with considerably different Rh—I distances to the bridging iodide anions. There are no classical hydrogen-bonding interactions observed for this complex
Resonant Metalenses for Breaking the Diffraction Barrier
We introduce the resonant metalens, a cluster of coupled subwavelength
resonators. Dispersion allows the conversion of subwavelength wavefields into
temporal signatures while the Purcell effect permits an efficient radiation of
this information in the far-field. The study of an array of resonant wires
using microwaves provides a physical understanding of the underlying mechanism.
We experimentally demonstrate imaging and focusing from the far-field with
resolutions far below the diffraction limit. This concept is realizable at any
frequency where subwavelength resonators can be designed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Importance of an Astrophysical Perspective for Textbook Relativity
The importance of a teaching a clear definition of the ``observer'' in
special relativity is highlighted using a simple astrophysical example from the
exciting current research area of ``Gamma-Ray Burst'' astrophysics. The example
shows that a source moving relativistically toward a single observer at rest
exhibits a time ``contraction'' rather than a ``dilation'' because the light
travel time between the source and observer decreases with time. Astrophysical
applications of special relativity complement idealized examples with real
applications and very effectively exemplify the role of a finite light travel

Revisiting the Hanbury Brown-Twiss set-up for fractional statistics
The Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiment has proved to be an effective means of
probing statistics of particles. Here, in a set-up involving edge-state
quasiparticles in a fractional quantum Hall system, we show that a variant of
the experiment composed of two sources and two sinks can be used to unearth
fractional statistics. We find a clear cut signature of the statistics in the
equal-time current-current correlation function for quasiparticle currents
emerging from the two sources and collected at the sinks.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
A radio-polarisation and rotation measure study of the Gum Nebula and its environment
The Gum Nebula is 36 degree wide shell-like emission nebula at a distance of
only 450 pc. It has been hypothesised to be an old supernova remnant, fossil
HII region, wind-blown bubble, or combination of multiple objects. Here we
investigate the magneto-ionic properties of the nebula using data from recent
surveys: radio-continuum data from the NRAO VLA and S-band Parkes All Sky
Surveys, and H-alpha data from the Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas. We model
the upper part of the nebula as a spherical shell of ionised gas expanding into
the ambient medium. We perform a maximum-likelihood Markov chain Monte-Carlo
fit to the NVSS rotation measure data, using the H-halpha data to constrain
average electron density in the shell . Assuming a latitudinal background
gradient in RM we find , angular radius
, shell thickness
, ambient magnetic field strength
and warm gas filling factor
. We constrain the local, small-scale (~260 pc)
pitch-angle of the ordered Galactic magnetic field to
, which represents a significant
deviation from the median field orientation on kiloparsec scales
(~-7.2). The moderate compression factor X=6.0\,^{+5.1}_{-2.5} at
the edge of the H-alpha shell implies that the 'old supernova remnant' origin
is unlikely. Our results support a model of the nebula as a HII region around a
wind-blown bubble. Analysis of depolarisation in 2.3 GHz S-PASS data is
consistent with this hypothesis and our best-fitting values agree well with

Carbonyl(N-nitroso-N-oxido-1-naphtylamine-κ2 O,O′)(triphenylphosphine-κP)rhodium(I) acetone solvate
The title compound, [Rh(C10H7N2O2)(C18H15P)(CO)]·(CH3)2CO, is the second structural report of a metal complex formed with the O,O′-C10H7N2O2 (neocupferrate) ligand. In the crystal structure, the metal centre is surrounded by one carbonyl ligand, one triphenylphosphine ligand and the bidentate neocupferrate ligand, forming a distorted square-planar RhCO2P coordination set which is best illustrated by the small O—Rh—O bite angle of 77.74 (10)°. There are no classical hydrogen-bond interactions observed for this complex
Strongly Coupled Matter-Field and Non-Analytic Decay Rate of Dipole Molecules in a Waveguide
The decay rate \gam of an excited dipole molecule inside a waveguide is
evaluated for the strongly coupled matter-field case near a cutoff frequency
\ome_c without using perturbation analysis. Due to the singularity in the
density of photon states at the cutoff frequency, we find that \gam depends
non-analytically on the coupling constant as . In contrast
to the ordinary evaluation of \gam which relies on the Fermi golden rule
(itself based on perturbation analysis), \gam has an upper bound and does not
diverge at \ome_c even if we assume perfect conductance in the waveguide
walls. As a result, again in contrast to the statement found in the literature,
the speed of emitted light from the molecule does not vanish at \ome_c and is
proportional to which is on the order of m/s for

VLBI measurements of radio source positions at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
The results of approximately 1300 observations of 67 radio sources are presented. Most of the measurements were made at the stations of the Deep Space Network in California, Spain, and Australia at wavelengths of 13.1 and 3.6 cm, between 1971 and 1978. The formal errors in the derived source positions are generally in the neighborhood of 0.01 seconds of arc and the positions agree fairly well with those previously published
Overcoming phonon-induced dephasing for indistinguishable photon sources
Reliable single photon sources constitute the basis of schemes for quantum
communication and measurement based quantum computing. Solid state single
photon sources based on quantum dots are convenient and versatile but the
electronic transitions that generate the photons are subject to interactions
with lattice vibrations. Using a microscopic model of electron-phonon
interactions and a quantum master equation, we here examine phonon-induced
decoherence and assess its impact on the rate of production, and
indistinguishability, of single photons emitted from an optically driven
quantum dot system. We find that, above a certain threshold of desired
indistinguishability, it is possible to mitigate the deleterious effects of
phonons by exploiting a three-level Raman process for photon production
