Noise and dynamical pattern selection
In pattern forming systems such as Rayleigh-Benard convection or directional
solidification, a large number of linearly stable, patterned steady states
exist when the basic, simple steady state is unstable. Which of these steady
states will be realized in a given experiment appears to depend on unobservable
details of the system's initial conditions. We show, however, that weak,
Gaussian white noise drives such a system toward a preferred wave number which
depends only on the system parameters and is independent of initial conditions.
We give a prescription for calculating this wave number, analytically near the

Use of Local Image Information in Depth Edge Classification by Humans and Neural Networks
Humans can use local cues to distinguish image edges caused by a depth change from other types of edges (Vilankar et al., 2014). But which local cues? Here we use the SYNS database (Adams et al., 2016) to automatically label edges in images of natural scenes as depth or non-depth. We use this ground truth to identify the cues used by human observers and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for edge classification. Eight observers viewed square image patches, each centered on an image edge, ranging in width from 0.6 to 2.4 degrees (8 to 32 pixels). Human judgments (depth/non-depth) were compared to responses of a CNN trained on the same task. Human performance improved with patch size (65%-74% correct) but remained well below CNN accuracy (82-86% correct). Agreement between humans and the CNN was above chance but lower than human-human agreement. Decision Variable Correlation (Sebastian & Geisler, in press) was used to evaluate the relationships between depth responses and local edge cues. Humans seem to rely primarily on contrast cues, specifically luminance contrast and red-green contrast across the edge. The CNN also relies on luminance contrast, but unlike humans it seems to make use of mean luminance and red-green intensity as well. These local luminance and color features provide valid cues for depth edge discrimination in natural scenes

We propose a bidirectional, polarization-independent, recirculating IQ-modulator scheme based on the silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform. We demonstrate the viability of the concept by using an SOH Mach-Zehnder modulator, operated at 10 GBd BPSK and 2ASK-2PSK
Evaluation of early and late presentation of patients with ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid to two major tertiary referral hospitals in the United Kingdom
PURPOSE: Ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid (OcMMP) is a sight-threatening autoimmune disease in which referral to specialists units for further management is a common practise. This study aims to describe referral patterns, disease phenotype and management strategies in patients who present with either early or established disease to two large tertiary care hospitals in the United Kingdom.\ud

PATIENTS AND METHODS: In all, 54 consecutive patients with a documented history of OcMMP were followed for 24 months. Two groups were defined: (i) early-onset disease (EOD:<3 years, n=26, 51 eyes) and (ii) established disease (EstD:>5 years, n=24, 48 eyes). Data were captured at first clinic visit, and at 12 and 24 months follow-up. Information regarding duration, activity and stage of disease, visual acuity (VA), therapeutic strategies and clinical outcome were analysed.\ud

RESULTS: Patients with EOD were younger and had more severe conjunctival inflammation (76% of inflamed eyes) than the EstD group, who had poorer VA (26.7%=VA<3/60, P<0.01) and more advanced disease. Although 40% of patients were on existing immunosuppression, 48% required initiation or switch to more potent immunotherapy. In all, 28% (14) were referred back to the originating hospitals for continued care. Although inflammation had resolved in 78% (60/77) at 12 months, persistence of inflammation and progression did not differ between the two phenotypes. Importantly, 42% demonstrated disease progression in the absence of clinically detectable inflammation.\ud

CONCLUSIONS: These data highlight that irrespective of OcMMP phenotype, initiation or escalation of potent immunosuppression is required at tertiary hospitals. Moreover, the conjunctival scarring progresses even when the eye remains clinically quiescent. Early referral to tertiary centres is recommended to optimise immunosuppression and limit long-term ocular damage.\ud

Microscopic theory of network glasses
A molecular theory of the glass transition of network forming liquids is
developed using a combination of self-consistent phonon and liquid state
approaches. Both the dynamical transition and the entropy crisis characteristic
of random first order transitions are mapped out as a function of the degree of
bonding and the density. Using a scaling relation for a soft-core model to
crudely translate the densities into temperatures, the theory predicts that the
ratio of the dynamical transition temperature to the laboratory transition
temperature rises as the degree of bonding increases, while the Kauzmann
temperature falls relative to the laboratory transition. These results indicate
why highly coordinated liquids should be "strong" while van der Waals liquids

The Southampton-York Natural Scenes (SYNS) dataset: statistics of surface attitude
Recovering 3D scenes from 2D images is an under-constrained task; optimal estimation depends upon knowledge of the underlying scene statistics. Here we introduce the Southampton-York Natural Scenes dataset (SYNS: https://syns.soton.ac.uk), which provides comprehensive scene statistics useful for understanding biological vision and for improving machine vision systems. In order to capture the diversity of environments that humans encounter, scenes were surveyed at random locations within 25 indoor and outdoor categories. Each survey includes (i) spherical LiDAR range data (ii) high-dynamic range spherical imagery and (iii) a panorama of stereo image pairs. We envisage many uses for the dataset and present one example: an analysis of surface attitude statistics, conditioned on scene category and viewing elevation. Surface normals were estimated using a novel adaptive scale selection algorithm. Across categories, surface attitude below the horizon is dominated by the ground plane (0° tilt). Near the horizon, probability density is elevated at 90°/270° tilt due to vertical surfaces (trees, walls). Above the horizon, probability density is elevated near 0° slant due to overhead structure such as ceilings and leaf canopies. These structural regularities represent potentially useful prior assumptions for human and machine observers, and may predict human biases in perceived surface attitude
Temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering fine structure in equiatomic CuAu
The temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering fine structure from
disordered equiatomic CuAu was studied using {\it in situ} x-ray scattering. In
contrast to CuAu the diffuse peak splitting in CuAu was found to be
relatively insensitive to temperature. Consequently, no evidence for a
divergence of the antiphase length-scale at the transition temperature was
found. At all temperatures studied the peak splitting is smaller than the value
corresponding to the CuAuII modulated phase. An extended Ginzburg-Landau
approach is used to explain the temperature dependence of the diffuse peak
profiles in the ordering and modulation directions. The estimated mean-field
instability point is considerably lower than is the case for CuAu.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Cumulative and Differential Effects of Early Child Care and Middle Childhood Out-of-School Time on Adolescent Functioning.
Effects associated with early child care and out-of-school time (OST) during middle childhood were examined in a large sample of U.S. adolescents (N = 958). Both higher quality early child care AND more epochs of organized activities (afterschool programs and extracurricular activities) during middle childhood were linked to higher academic achievement at age 15. Differential associations were found in the behavioral domain. Higher quality early child care was associated with fewer externalizing problems, whereas more hours of early child care was linked to greater impulsivity. More epochs of organized activities was associated with greater social confidence. Relations between early child care and adolescent outcomes were not mediated or moderated by OST arrangements in middle childhood, consistent with independent, additive relations of these nonfamilial settings
