    Effect of Poisson ratio on cellular structure formation

    Mechanically active cells in soft media act as force dipoles. The resulting elastic interactions are long-ranged and favor the formation of strings. We show analytically that due to screening, the effective interaction between strings decays exponentially, with a decay length determined only by geometry. Both for disordered and ordered arrangements of cells, we predict novel phase transitions from paraelastic to ferroelastic and anti-ferroelastic phases as a function of Poisson ratio.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 Postscript figures include

    CFD-DEM characterization and population balance modelling of a dispersive mixing process

    This work investigates the breakup dynamics of solid agglomerates in a polymer compounding operation, by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations together with discrete element method (DEM) simulations. CFD simulations are used to compute the flow field and the shear stress distribution inside a 2D section of a typical internal mixer for polymer compounding. DEM simulations are instead used to predict the mechanical response of the agglomerates and to detect the critical viscous shear stress needed to induce breakup. DEM breakup data and viscous stress distributions are correlated by a first–time passage–statistics and used to calibrate a population balance model. The work returned detailed insights into the flow field characteristics and into the dispersive mixing kinetics. The simulation strategy herein reported can be adapted to study generic solid–liquid disperse flows in which the breakup of the solid phase is found at the core of the system behaviour

    A CFD-DEM approach to study the breakup of fractal agglomerates in an internal mixer

    In this work we present a method to investigate the breakup of filler agglomerates in an internal mixer during a compounding operation. The method employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations along with discrete element method (DEM) simulations. CFD simulations are performed to compute the flow field inside a 2D section of a typical batch internal mixer with two tangential rotors. During the CFD simulation, we assume the filler agglomerates to behave as tracer particles, carried passively by the flow. The trajectory of the tracers, together with the experienced velocity gradients, are fed to a DEM code, built in the framework of Stokesian dynamics. The code computes the mechanical response of the agglomerates along the trajectory, from which it is finally possible to ascertain the occurrence of breakup.     Uneven Relationalities, Collective Biography, and Sisterly Affect in Neoliberal Universities

    This article deploys a collective biographical methodology as a political and epistemological intervention in order to explore the emotional and affective politics of academic work for women in neoliberal universities. The managerial practices of contemporary universities tend to elevate disembodied reason over emotion; to repress, commodify, or co-opt emotional and affective labor; to increase individualization and competition among academic workers; and to disregard the relational work that the article suggests is essential for well-being at work. The apparent marginalization of feminist and feminine ways of being, thinking, and feeling in academia is examined through close readings of three narrative vignettes, which are based on memories of the everyday academic spaces of meetings, workshops, and mentoring. These stories explore moments of the breaking of ties among women and between men and women, as well as document how feminist relationalities can bind and exclude. The article suggests that academic ties are both part of the problem and the solution to countering neoliberal policies, and that academic relationships, especially with other women, are often experienced as unrealized spaces of hope. Building on feminist scholarship about race and diversity, the article reflects on how relational practices like collective biography create both inclusions and exclusions. Nevertheless, it suggests that the methodology of collective biography might engender more sustainable and ethical ways of being in academic workplaces because it provides the resources to begin to create a new collective imaginary of academia

    Role of lateral and feedback connections in primary visual cortex in the processing of spatiotemporal regularity: a TMS study

    Our human visual system exploits spatiotemporal regularity to interpret incoming visual signals. With a dynamic stimulus sequence of four collinear bars (predictors) appearing consecutively toward the fovea, followed by a target bar with varying contrasts, we have previously found that this predictable spatiotemporal stimulus structure enhances target detection performance and its underlying neural process starts in the primary visual cortex (area V1). However, the relative contribution of V1 lateral and feedback connections in the processing of spatiotemporal regularity remains unclear. In this study we measured human contrast detection of a briefly presented foveal target that was embedded in a dynamic collinear predictor-target sequence. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to selectively disrupt V1 horizontal and feedback connections in the processing of predictors. The coil was positioned over a cortical location corresponding to the location of the last predictor prior to target onset. Single-pulse TMS at an intensity of 10% below phosphene threshold was delivered at 20 or 90ms after the predictor onset. Our analysis revealed that the delivery of TMS at both time windows equally reduced, but did not abolish, the facilitation effect of the predictors on target detection. Furthermore, if the predictors’ ordination was randomized to suppress V1 lateral connections, the TMS disruption was significantly more evident at 20ms than at 90ms time window. We suggest that both lateral and feedback connections contribute to the encoding of spatiotemporal regularity in V1. These findings develop understanding of how our visual system exploits spatiotemporal regularity to facilitate the efficiency of visual perception

    The purposes of this research are to: 1) analyze the distribution of subsidized fertilizer in Gorontalo City, 2) analyze the distribution of subsidized fertilizers partially (right price, right amount, and time) to increase rice production in Gorontalo City. The study conducted in Gorontalo City with a sample number of 95 farmers. The research method used is survey method. Data analysis used is multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that there are two distributors fertilizer in Gorontalo City is PT. Indonesian Trade Company (PT PPI) and Indonesian Trade Cooperative (KPI), and 5 authorized retailers which are distributing subsidized fertilizer is Kios Tani Lestari, Anugerah Tani Kios, Saprodi Tani Kios, Cahaya Tani Kios and Bunga Tani Kios. PT. PPI is responsible for distributing NPK, SP36 and ZA fertilizers while KPI is responsible for the distribution of Urea fertilizer.     A mutation screening of oncogenes, tumor suppressor gene TP53 and nuclear encoded mitochondrial complex I genes in oncocytic thyroid tumors.

    Background: Thyroid neoplasias with oncocytic features represent a specific phenotype in non-medullary thyroid cancer, reflecting the unique biological phenomenon of mitochondrial hyperplasia in the cytoplasm. Oncocytic thyroid cells are characterized by a prominent eosinophilia (or oxyphilia) caused by mitochondrial abundance. Although disruptive mutations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are the most significant hallmark of such tumors, oncocytomas may be envisioned as heterogeneous neoplasms, characterized by multiple nuclear and mitochondrial gene lesions. We investigated the nuclear mutational profile of oncocytic tumors to pinpoint the mutations that may trigger the early oncogenic hit. Methods: Total DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissues from 45 biopsies of oncocytic tumors. High-resolution melting was used for mutation screening of mitochondrial complex I subunits genes. Specific nuclear rearrangements were investigated by RT-PCR (RET/PTC) or on isolated nuclei by interphase FISH (PAX8/PPARγ). Recurrent point mutations were analyzed by direct sequencing. Results: In our oncocytic tumor samples, we identified rare TP53 mutations. The series of analyzed cases did not include poorly- or undifferentiated thyroid carcinomas, and none of the TP53 mutated cases had significant mitotic activity or high-grade features. Thus, the presence of disruptive TP53 mutations was completely unexpected. In addition, novel mutations in nuclear-encoded complex I genes were identified. Conclusions: These findings suggest that nuclear genetic lesions altering the bioenergetics competence of thyroid cells may give rise to an aberrant mitochondria-centered compensatory mechanism and ultimately to the oncocytic phenotype.
