Structural, Vibrational and Thermodynamic Properties of AgnCu34-n Nanoparticles
We report results of a systematic study of structural, vibrational and
thermodynamical properties of 34-atom bimetallic nanoparticles from the
AgnCu34-n family using model interaction potentials as derived from the
embedded atom method and in the harmonic approximation of lattice dynamics.
Systematic trends in the bond length and dynamical properties can be explained
largely on arguments based on local coordination and elemental environment.
Thus increase in the number of silver atoms in a given neighborhood introduces
a monotonic increase in bond length while increase of the copper content does
the reverse. Moreover, based on bond lengths of the lowest coordinated (6 and
8) copper atoms with their nearest neighbors (Cu atoms), we find that the
nanoparticles divide into two groups with average bond length either close to
(~ 2.58 A) or smaller (~ 2.48 A) than that in bulk copper, accompanied by
characteristic features in their vibrational density of states. For the entire
set of nanoparticles, vibrational modes are found above the bulk bands of
copper/silver. Furthermore, a blue shift in the high frequency end with
increasing number of copper atoms in the nanoparticles is traced to a shrinkage
of bond lengths from bulk values. The vibrational densities of states at the
low frequency end of the spectrum scale linearly with frequency as for single
element nanoparticles, however, the effect is more pronounced for these
nanoalloys. The Debye temperature was found to be about one third of that of
the bulk for pure copper and silver nanoparticles with a non-linear increase
with increasing number of copper atoms in the nanoalloys.Comment: 37 pages, 12 figure
Cytotoxic and antibacterial activity of the mixture of olive oil and lime cream in vitro conditions
The mixture of olive oil and lime cream has been traditionally used to treat external burns in the region of Hatay/Antakya and middle Anatolia. Olive oil and lime cream have been employed by many physicians to treat many ailments in the past. A limited number of studies have shown the antibacterial effect of olive oil and that it does not have any toxic effect on the skin. But we did not find any reported studies on the mixture of olive oil and lime cream. The aim of this paper is to investigate the cytotoxic and antibacterial activity of olive oil and lime cream individually or/and in combination in vitro conditions, by using disk-diffusion method and in cell culture. The main purpose in using this mixture is usually to clear burns without a trace. Agar overlay, MTT (Cytotoxicity assay) and antibacterial susceptibility tests were used to investigate the cytotoxic and antibacterial activity of olive oil and lime cream. We found that lime cream has an antibacterial activity but also cytotoxic on the fibroblasts. On the other hand olive oil has limited or no antibacterial effect and it has little or no cytotoxic on the fibroblasts. When we combined lime cream and olive oil, olive oil reduced its cytotoxic impact. These results suggest that mixture of olive oil and lime cream is not cytotoxic and has antimicrobial activity.Keywords: Olive oil, lime cream, burn, in vitro, cytotoxic activity, antibacterial activit
External magnetic field effects on a distorted kagome antiferromagnet
We report bulk magnetization, and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering
measurements under an external magnetic field, , on the weakly coupled
distorted kagome system, Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl. Our results show that the ordered
state below 6.7 K is a canted antiferromagnet and consists of large
antiferromagnetic -components and smaller ferromagnetic -components. By
first-principle calculations and linear spin wave analysis, we present a simple
spin hamiltonian with non-uniform nearest neighbor exchange interactions
resulting in a system of coupled spin trimers with a single-ion anisotropy that
can qualitatively reproduce the spin dynamics of Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl.Comment: 5 figure

Heart ventricular histology and microvasculature together with aortic histology and elastic lamellar structure: A comparison of a novel dual-purpose to a broiler chicken line
The use of dual-purpose chickens is a strategy to avoid killing one-day-old male chicks of egg laying lines. Lohmann Dual (LD) is a novel dual-purpose chicken line created by the crossbreeding of layer and broiler lines. However, many of the cardiovascular diseases of broilers are likely to be associated with intensive genetic selection for growth and feed conversion efficiency. This study aimed to compare the macroscopic and microscopic structure of the heart and the aorta of the LD chicken line with that of the broiler chicken line, Ross 308 (Ross) under typical husbandry conditions for meat production. Eighty, one-day-old male chicks of each line were housed for 5 weeks (Ross) and 9 weeks (LD). Six birds of each line were sampled weekly. Heart mass, thickness of ventricular walls, cardiomyocyte size and blood capillary density as well as aortic diameter and thickness, number of elastic lamellae and elastic fiber percentage in the aortic wall were determined. The growth patterns of the heart were the same in the two lines. Although LD chickens had a lower absolute heart mass than that of Ross chickens, the relative heart mass in both lines was similar. The cardiomyocytes of LD chickens were larger than those of Ross’s of the same body weight (BW), nevertheless both lines had similar thicknesses of their ventricular walls. The blood capillary density was greater in the LD heart than in that of the Ross heart. The aorta of LD chickens had proportionally; a greater aortic lumen radius, larger numbers of elastic lamellae and more elastic fibers than in Ross chickens. Our results suggest that the heart and aorta of the LD chickens have not been disadvantaged by their intensive genetic selection; furthermore, LD chickens have a better myocardial capillary supply and better aortic mechanical properties than those of Ross chickens
Examination of Science Achievement in the 8th Grade Level in Turkey in Terms of National and International Exams Depending upon Various Variables
The aim of the present study is to examine the effect of demographic characteristics of students in Turkey upon their performance in TIMSS, an international assessment exam and Secondary Education Transition Examination which is a national exam (OGS). One of the fields of sciences, biology is taken into account as student performance. As a result of the t-test analysis, it was determined that gender has a statistically significant effect on the students’ TIMSS and TEOG exam results; besides, it was found that female students are more successful compared to boys Whether students receive private tutoring which refers to the economic characteristics of the students has not statistically significant effect on TIMSS biology scores, while it has a positive and significant impact upon OGS biology scores. Moreover, findings revealed that parental educational level has a positive and significant effect on TIMSS and OGS scores of the students. Anisotropic Spin Hamiltonians due to Spin-Orbit and Coulomb Exchange Interactions
This paper contains the details of Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 2919 (1994) and, to a
lesser extent, Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 3710 (1994). We treat a Hubbard model which
includes all the 3d states of the Cu ions and the 2p states of the O ions. We
also include spin-orbit interactions, hopping between ground and excited
crystal field states of the Cu ions, and rather general Coulomb interactions.
Our analytic results for the spin Hamiltonian, H, are corroborated by numerical
evaluations of the energy splitting of the ground manifold for two holes on
either a pair of Cu ions or a Cu-O-Cu complex. In the tetragonal symmetry case
and for the model considered, we prove that H is rotationally invariant in the
absence of Coulomb exchange. When Coulomb exchange is present, each bond
Hamiltonian has full biaxial anisotropy, as expected for this symmetry. For
lower symmetry situations, the single bond spin Hamiltonian is anisotropic at
order t**6 for constant U and at order t**2 for nonconstant U. (Constant U
means that the Coulomb interaction between orbitals does not depend on which

Template-Directed Synthesis of Silica Nanotubes for Explosive Detection
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Fluorescent porous organic-inorganic thin films are of interest of explosive detection because of their vapor phase fluorescence quenching property. In this work, we synthesized fluorescent silica nanotubes using a biomineralization process through self-assembled peptidic nanostructures. We designed and synthesized an amyloid-like peptide self-assembling into nanofibers to be used as a template for silica nanotube formation. The amine groups on the peptide nanofibrous system were used for nucleation of silica nanostructures. Silica nanotubes were used to prepare highly porous surfaces, and they were doped with a fluorescent dye by physical adsorption for explosive sensing. These porous surfaces exhibited fast, sensitive, and highly selective fluorescence quenching against nitro-explosive vapors. The materials developed in this work have vast potential in sensing applications due to enhanced surface area. © 2011 American Chemical Society
Tunable adsorption on carbon nanotubes
We investigated the adsorption of a single atom, hydrogen and aluminum, on
single wall carbon nanotubes from first-principles. The adsorption is
exothermic, and the associated binding energy varies inversely as the radius of
the zigzag tube. We found that the adsorption of a single atom and related
properties can be modified continuously and reversibly by the external radial
deformation. The binding energy on the high curvature site of the deformed tube
increases with increasing radial deformation. The effects of curvature and
radial deformation depend on the chirality of the tube.Comment: To be appear in Physical Review Letter
Pressure-Induced Interlinking of Carbon Nanotubes
We predict new forms of carbon consisting of one and two dimensional networks
of interlinked single wall carbon nanotubes, some of which are energetically
more stable than van der Waals packing of the nanotubes on a hexagonal lattice.
These interlinked nanotubes are further transformed with higher applied
external pressures to more dense and complicated stable structures, in which
curvature-induced carbon sp re-hybridizations are formed. We also discuss
the energetics of the bond formation between nanotubes and the electronic
