Topological Modes in Dual Lattice Models
Lattice gauge theory with gauge group is reconsidered in four
dimensions on a simplicial complex . One finds that the dual theory,
formulated on the dual block complex , contains topological modes
which are in correspondence with the cohomology group ,
in addition to the usual dynamical link variables. This is a general phenomenon
in all models with single plaquette based actions; the action of the dual
theory becomes twisted with a field representing the above cohomology class. A
similar observation is made about the dual version of the three dimensional
Ising model. The importance of distinct topological sectors is confirmed
numerically in the two dimensional Ising model where they are parameterized by

Ion Charge States in Halo CMEs: What can we Learn about the Explosion?
We describe a new modeling approach to develop a more quantitative
understanding of the charge state distributions of the ions of various elements
detected in situ during halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) events by the Advanced
Composition Explorer (ACE) satellite. Using a model CME hydrodynamic evolution
based on observations of CMEs propagating in the plane of the sky and on
theoretical models, we integrate time dependent equations for the ionization
balance of various elements to compare with ACE data. We find that plasma in
the CME ``core'' typically requires further heating following filament
eruption, with thermal energy input similar to the kinetic energy input. This
extra heating is presumably the result of post eruptive reconnection. Plasma
corresponding to the CME ``cavity'' is usually not further ionized, since
whether heated or not, the low density gives freeze-in close the the Sun. The
current analysis is limited by ambiguities in the underlying model CME
evolution. Such methods are likely to reach their full potential when applied
to data to be acquired by STEREO when at optimum separation. CME evolution
observed with one spacecraft may be used to interpret CME charge states

Daily Illness Characteristics and Health Care Decisions of Older People
Although investigations of health care decision making typically deal with patterns of health service use, increasing attention has focused on lay- and self-care actions in response to illness symptoms. This study examined the health care actions of a community sample of 142 older adults, who recorded illness symptoms and corresponding health care actions in daily health diaries for a 14-day period. Self-treatment and no-action decisions were found to be the most frequent response to illness symptoms. Professional-care decisions were associated with greater health care need, such as multiple symptoms and increased pain. Lay-care decisions were significantly related to symptoms of shorter duration. Women were also more likely than men to self-treat their illness symptoms. Results suggest that older people deal with a greater number of recurrent chronic symptoms than previously thought and that they make most treatment decisions without consulting their doctors or other health care providers. This investigation underscores the importance of a prospective diary methodology for studying the daily complex ities of chronic illness experiences and for validating and conducting useful interventions.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67082/2/10.1177_073346489101000204.pd
Measuring Future Time Perspective across Adulthood: Development and Evaluation of a Brief Multidimensional Questionnaire.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY:
Despite calls for the consideration of future time perspective (FTP) as a multidimensional construct, mostly unidimensional measurement instruments have been used. This study had two objectives: (a) to develop a brief multidimensional questionnaire for assessing FTP in adulthood and evaluate its psychometric properties; and (b) to examine age associations and age-group differences of the dimensions of FTP.
DESIGN AND METHODS:
Data were collected from 625 community-residing adults between the ages of 18 and 93, representing young, middle-aged, and older adults. The psychometric evaluation involved exploratory factor analyses (EFA) and confirmatory FA (CFA), reliability and validity analyses, and measurement invariance testing. Zero-order and partial correlations were used to examine the association of the dimensions of FTP with age, and multivariate analysis of variance was used to examine age-group differences.
RESULTS:
EFA and CFA supported a three-factor solution: Future as Open, Future as Limited, and Future as Ambiguous. Metric measurement invariance for this factor structure was confirmed across the three age groups. Reliability and validity analyses provided evidence of sound psychometric properties of the brief questionnaire. Age was negatively associated with Future as Open and positively associated with Future as Limited. Young adults exhibited significantly greater ambiguity toward the future than middle-aged or older adults.
IMPLICATIONS:
This study provides evidence in support of the psychometric properties of a new brief multidimensional FTP scale. It also provides evidence for a pattern of age associations and age-group differences consistent with life-span developmental theory
Cosmic Ray Acceleration at the Forward Shock in Tycho's Supernova Remnant: Evidence from Chandra X-ray Observations
We present evidence for cosmic ray acceleration at the forward shock in
Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR) from three X-ray observables: (1) the proximity
of the contact discontinuity to the forward shock, or blast wave, (2) the
morphology of the emission from the rim of Tycho, and (3) the spectral nature
of the rim emission. We determine the locations of the blast wave (BW), contact
discontinuity (CD), and reverse shock (RS) around the rim of Tycho's supernova
remnant using a principal component analysis and other methods applied to new
Chandra data. The azimuthal-angle-averaged radius of the BW is 251". For the CD
and RS we find average radii of 241" and 183", respectively. Taking account of
projection effects, we find ratios of 1:0.93:0.70 (BW:CD:RS). We show these
values to be inconsistent with adiabatic hydrodynamical models of SNR
evolution. The CD:BW ratio can be explained if cosmic ray acceleration of ions
is occurring at the forward shock. The RS:BW ratio, as well as the strong Fe Ka
emission from the Tycho ejecta, imply that the RS is not accelerating cosmic
rays. We also extract radial profiles from ~34% of the rim of Tycho and compare
them to models of surface brightness profiles behind the BW for a purely
thermal plasma with an adiabatic shock. The observed morphology of the rim is
much more strongly peaked than predicted by the model, indicating that such
thermal emission is implausible here. Spectral analysis also implies that the
rim emission is non-thermal in nature, lending further support to the idea that
Tycho's forward shock is accelerating cosmic rays.Comment: 39 pages, 10 figures, accepted by Ap
Elemental Abundances in the Possible Type Ia Supernova Remnant G344.7-0.1
Recent studies on the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G344.7-0.1 have
commonly claimed its origin to be a core-collapse supernova (SN) explosion,
based on its highly asymmetric morphology and/or proximity to a star forming
region. In this paper, however, we present an X-ray spectroscopic study of this
SNR using Suzaku, which is supportive of a Type Ia origin. Strong K-shell
emission from lowly ionized Fe has clearly been detected, and its origin is
determined, for the first time, to be the Fe-rich SN ejecta. The abundance
pattern is highly consistent with that expected for a somewhat-evolved Type Ia
SNR. It is suggested, therefore, that the X-ray point-like source CXOU
J170357.8-414302 located at the SNR's geometrical center is not associated with
the SNR but is likely to be a foreground object. Our result further indicates
that G344.7-0.1 is the first possible Type Ia SNR categorized as a member of
the so-called "mixed-morphology" class. In addition, we have detected emission
from He-like Al at ~1.6 keV, the first clear detection of this element in the
spectrum of an extended X-ray source. The possible enhancement of the Al/Mg
abundance ratio from the solar value suggests that the ambient interstellar
medium has a relatively high metallicity (not less than 10% of the solar
value), if this SNR has indeed a Type Ia origin. We also report marginal
detection of Cr and Mn, although the measured fluxes have large statistical and

Automated Crystal Orientation Mapping in py4DSTEM using Sparse Correlation Matching
Crystalline materials used in technological applications are often complex
assemblies composed of multiple phases and differently oriented grains. Robust
identification of the phases and orientation relationships from these samples
is crucial, but the information extracted from the diffraction condition probed
by an electron beam is often incomplete. We therefore have developed an
automated crystal orientation mapping (ACOM) procedure which uses a converged
electron probe to collect diffraction patterns from multiple locations across a
complex sample. We provide an algorithm to determine the orientation of each
diffraction pattern based on a fast sparse correlation method. We test the
speed and accuracy of our method by indexing diffraction patterns generated
using both kinematical and dynamical simulations. We have also measured
orientation maps from an experimental dataset consisting of a complex
polycrystalline twisted helical AuAgPd nanowire. From these maps we identify
twin planes between adjacent grains, which may be responsible for the twisted
helical structure. All of our methods are made freely available as open source
code, including tutorials which can be easily adapted to perform ACOM
measurements on diffraction pattern datasets.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Laser-produced plasma EUV source based on tin-rich, thin-layer targets
In this paper a new approach to a laser-produced plasma EUV source based on a tin target is presented. A thin layer of pure tin and composite layers consisting of Sn with Si, SiO and LiF are investigated. The target composed of several thin layers produces less debris than the other targets and provides a conversion efficiency (CE) in the 13.5-nm +/- 1% band at least comparable to the CE for the pure tin slab target. The largest CE was observed for the target composed of a mixture of Sn and LiF, due to the fact that lithium, similarly to tin, is a strong emitter at 13.5 nm
Resonant third harmonic generation of KrF laser in Ar gas
Investigations of emission of harmonics from argon gas jet irradiated by 700 fs, 5 mJ pulses from a KrF laser are presented. Harmonics conversion was optimized by varying the experimental geometry and the nozzle size. For the collection of the harmonic radiation silicon and solar-blind diamond semiconductor detectors equipped with charge preamplifiers were applied. The possibility of using a single-crystal CVD diamond detector for separate measurement of the 3rd harmonic in the presence of a strong pumping radiation was explored. Our experiments show that the earlier suggested 0.7% conversion efficiency can really be obtained, but only in the case when phase matching is optimized with an elongated gas target length corresponding to the length of coherence
