Sosiaalisen kompetenssin yhteys häiriökäyttäytymisen kokemiseen kainuulaisilla 5.–6. luokan oppilailla
Thermal Correlators in Holographic Models with Lifshitz scaling
We study finite temperature effects in two distinct holographic models that
exhibit Lifshitz scaling, looking to identify model independent features in the
dual strong coupling physics. We consider the thermodynamics of black branes
and find different low-temperature behavior of the specific heat. Deformation
away from criticality leads to non-trivial temperature dependence of
correlation functions and we study how the characteristic length scale in the
two point function of scalar operators varies as a function of temperature and
deformation parameters.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures; typos corrected, references added, published

Meissner Effect and Vortex Dynamics in Quark Stars -- A Model for Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters
We present a new model for soft gamma-ray repeaters based on a quark star
born with temperatures above the critical value (T_c) for the onset of the
colour-flavor locked superconductivity. The quark star then quickly cools below
T_c, expelling a fraction of the surface magnetic field via the Meissner
effect. We show that if a small fraction (\leq 10%) of the surface magnetic
field (10^{14} - 10^{15} {\rm G}) is expelled, it quickly decays via magnetic
reconnection and heats up the quark star surface to temperatures > 10^9 {\rm
K}. Created (e^{+},e^{-}) pairs annihilate into gamma rays emitted in a giant
burst (the first burst in our model), with a luminosity of \sim 10^{45} {\rm
ergs} {\rm s}^{-1}. Subsequent bursts result from the restructuring of the
surface magnetic field following the formation and relaxation of a vortex
lattice which confines the internal magnetic field. During this phase, energy
is sporadically released as a consequence of magnetic reconnection events in
the entangled surface magnetic field as it evolves into a smooth, more stable,
configuration. The star eventually enters a quiescent phase in which energy is
continuously supplied by vortex annihilation at the surface. As the star spins
down, the outermost vortex lines will be pushed to the surface where they
annihilate and release their confined magnetic field. We show that the
corresponding luminosity is L_v \sim 10^{36} {\rm ergs} {\rm s}^{-1} for a
typical soft gamma-ray repeater spinning with a period of 8 {\rm s} and a
surface magnetic field not exceeding 10^{15} {\rm G}. Our model can be applied
to any situation where a T>T_{\rm c} quark star is generated. We discuss the
connection between anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters in the
context of our model.Comment: Version to appear in A&A. Added an entire section (section 8)
discussing among other points, the AXP-SGR connection, glitches and the issue
of transverse velocities in our model. References have been updated

Overpopulation of in pp collisions: a way to distinguish statistical hadronization from string dynamics
The ratio originating from string decays is predicted
to be larger than unity in proton proton interactions at SPS energies (=160 GeV). The anti-omega dominance increases with decreasing beam energy.
This surprising behavior is caused by the combinatorics of quark-antiquark
production in small and low-mass strings. Since this behavior is not found in a
statistical description of hadron production in proton proton collisions, it
may serve as a key observable to probe the hadronization mechanism in such
collisions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Multiplicity Distributions in Canonical and Microcanonical Statistical Ensembles
The aim of this paper is to introduce a new technique for calculation of
observables, in particular multiplicity distributions, in various statistical
ensembles at finite volume. The method is based on Fourier analysis of the
grand canonical partition function. Taylor expansion of the generating function
is used to separate contributions to the partition function in their power in
volume. We employ Laplace's asymptotic expansion to show that any equilibrium
distribution of multiplicity, charge, energy, etc. tends to a multivariate
normal distribution in the thermodynamic limit. Gram-Charlier expansion allows
additionally for calculation of finite volume corrections. Analytical formulas
are presented for inclusion of resonance decay and finite acceptance effects
directly into the system partition function. This paper consolidates and
extends previously published results of current investigation into properties
of statistical ensembles.Comment: 53 pages, 7 figure
Semi-supervised learning for the identification of syn-expressed genes from fused microarray and in situ image data
Background:
Gene expression measurements during the development of the fly Drosophila melanogaster are routinely used to find functional modules of temporally co-expressed genes. Complimentary large data sets of in situ RNA hybridization images for different stages of the fly embryo elucidate the spatial expression patterns.
Results:
Using a semi-supervised approach, constrained clustering with mixture models, we can find clusters of genes exhibiting spatio-temporal similarities in expression, or syn-expression. The temporal gene expression measurements are taken as primary data for which pairwise constraints are computed in an automated fashion from raw in situ images without the need for manual annotation. We investigate the influence of these pairwise constraints in the clustering and discuss the biological relevance of our results.
Conclusion:
Spatial information contributes to a detailed, biological meaningful analysis of temporal gene expression data. Semi-supervised learning provides a flexible, robust and efficient framework for integrating data sources of differing quality and abundance
Nonparametric identification of regulatory interactions from spatial and temporal gene expression data
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The correlation between the expression levels of transcription factors and their target genes can be used to infer interactions within animal regulatory networks, but current methods are limited in their ability to make correct predictions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we describe a novel approach which uses nonparametric statistics to generate ordinary differential equation (ODE) models from expression data. Compared to other dynamical methods, our approach requires minimal information about the mathematical structure of the ODE; it does not use qualitative descriptions of interactions within the network; and it employs new statistics to protect against over-fitting. It generates spatio-temporal maps of factor activity, highlighting the times and spatial locations at which different regulators might affect target gene expression levels. We identify an ODE model for <it>eve </it>mRNA pattern formation in the <it>Drosophila melanogaster </it>blastoderm and show that this reproduces the experimental patterns well. Compared to a non-dynamic, spatial-correlation model, our ODE gives 59% better agreement to the experimentally measured pattern. Our model suggests that protein factors frequently have the potential to behave as both an activator and inhibitor for the same <it>cis</it>-regulatory module depending on the factors' concentration, and implies different modes of activation and repression.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our method provides an objective quantification of the regulatory potential of transcription factors in a network, is suitable for both low- and moderate-dimensional gene expression datasets, and includes improvements over existing dynamic and static models.</p
