    The prpose of this thesis is two-fold: First, it is the author\u27s intention to present a short biography of John Churchill from his birth in 1650 to the outbreak of the great continental war of 1700. The second and primary purpose is to evaluate Marlborough \u27s military role during the War of Spanish Succession, while serving as Commander in Chief, Allied Armies, on the Continent. The four major battles to be emphasized in this section are Blenheim, 1704; Ramilles, 1706; Oudenarde, 1706; and Malpaquet, 1709, with primary emphasis on Blenheim. The central theme of this thesis is to illustrate how Marlborough \u27s mastery of the battlefield completely revolutionized both strategy and tactics of land warfare. During each of the four campaigns, his tactics, overall strategy, logistics, support, lines of communications, cavalry and artillery employment, and personal leadership will be evaluated

    Vertical quantum wire realized with double cleaved-edge overgrowth

    A quantum wire is fabricated on (001)-GaAs at the intersection of two overgrown cleaves. The wire is contacted at each end to n+ GaAs layers via two-dimensional (2D) leads. A sidegate controls the density of the wire revealing conductance quantization. The step height is strongly reduced from 2e^2/h due to the 2D-lead series resistance. We characterize the 2D density and mobility for both cleave facets with four-point measurements. The density on the first facet is modulated by the substrate potential, depleting a 2um wide strip that defines the wire length. Micro-photoluminescence shows an extra peak consistent with 1D electron states at the corner.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Edge Magnetoplasmons in Quantum Hall Line Junction Systems

    A quantum Hall line junction system consists of a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid (LL) and two chiral channels that allow density waves incident upon and reflected by the LL to be measured separately. We demonstrate that interactions in a quantum Hall line junction system can be probed by studying edge magnetoplasmon absorption spectra and their polarization dependences. Strong interactions in the junction lead to collective modes that are isolated in either Luttinger liquid or contact subsystems.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
