Vocational identity in adolescence according to family
The present study aims to analyze the relation between the statutes of vocational
identity and family variables, throughout adolescence. The variables related to the family context that were taken into account were the following: parental authority, perception of parents’ support, parents’ qualifications, family self-concept, sibling friendship, divorce versus non divorce of parents, and television viewing of aggressive programs. The sample
consisted of 357 students of different school years (7th, 9th and 11th grades) and of both sexes. Melgosa’s (1987) Occupational Identity Scale, already adapted to Portugal, was used as the evaluation instrument, with the following factors: diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, achievement. Analyses of the results showed significant differences in most situations as
regards the dimensions of vocational identity, according to each of the independent variables; these differences favored the groups belonging to better family contexts. In several of the situations the effect of the interaction of the variable school year with the
variables related to the family context was also found. This study includes the discussion of the results and their comparison to somewhat similar investigations, suggesting the need for further research associated to school and personal variables
On the reduction of hypercubic lattice artifacts
This note presents a comparative study of various options to reduce the
errors coming from the discretization of a Quantum Field Theory in a lattice
with hypercubic symmetry. We show that it is possible to perform an
extrapolation towards the continuum which is able to eliminate systematically
the artifacts which break the O(4) symmetry.Comment: 15 pages. 4 figures. Minor changes (Appendix and refs added
Aprendizagem: Perspetivas Sócio-Construtivistas.
designadamente: 1) O modelo da ecologia do desenvolvimento e os contributos da teoria de Bronfenbrenner, com os seus conceitos de microssistema,mesossistema, exossistema e macrossistema e as interações entre esses sistemas;
Indiscipline at Portugueses schools: focus on the schools of the Azores
This article results from a set of studies about indiscipline in schools in the Azores Islands, that we have been working individually or in collaboration with other colleagues. Those studies aimed to better understand the phenomenon from the point of view of students and teachers. Data collection method was a questionnaire answered by students and teachers of different levels of education. Main results showed, in general, coincidence of thoughts among students and teachers. For both groups, indiscipline in the schools of the Azores still is unremarkable. According to this, we tried to produce useful information for teachers practice, particularly in terms of classroom management and communicational process between students and student- teacher
Chandra Observations of ULIRGs: Extended Hot Gas Halos in Merging Galaxies
We study the properties of hot gaseous halos in 10 nearby ultraluminous IRAS
galaxies observed with the ACIS instrument on board Chandra. For all sample
galaxies, diffuse soft X-ray emissions are found within ~10 kpc of the central
region; their spectra are well fitted by a MEKAL model plus emission lines from
alpha-elements and other ions. The temperature of the hot gas is about 0.7 keV
and metallicity is about 1 solar. Outside the central region, extended hot
gaseous halos are found for nine out of the ten ULIRGs. Most spectra of these
extended halos can be fitted with a MEKAL model with a temperature of about 0.6
keV and a low metallicity (~ 0.1 solar). We discuss the implications of our
results on the origin of X-ray halos in elliptical galaxies and the feedback
processes associated with starbursts.Comment: 31 pages, 6 figuers, ApJ in press, accepted versio
GW method with the self-consistent Sternheimer equation
We propose a novel approach to quasiparticle GW calculations which does not
require the computation of unoccupied electronic states. In our approach the
screened Coulomb interaction is evaluated by solving self-consistent
linear-response Sternheimer equations, and the noninteracting Green's function
is evaluated by solving inhomogeneous linear systems. The frequency-dependence
of the screened Coulomb interaction is explicitly taken into account. In order
to avoid the singularities of the screened Coulomb interaction the calculations
are performed along the imaginary axis, and the results are analytically
continued to the real axis through Pade' approximants. As a proof of concept we
implemented the proposed methodology within the empirical pseudopotential
formalism and we validated our implementation using silicon as a test case. We
examine the advantages and limitations of our method and describe promising
future directions.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
Measuring Active-to-Sterile Neutrino Oscillations with Neutral Current Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering
Light sterile neutrinos have been introduced as an explanation for a number
of oscillation signals at eV. Neutrino oscillations at
relatively short baselines provide a probe of these possible new states. This
paper describes an accelerator-based experiment using neutral current coherent
neutrino-nucleus scattering to strictly search for active-to-sterile neutrino
oscillations. This experiment could, thus, definitively establish the existence
of sterile neutrinos and provide constraints on their mixing parameters. A
cyclotron-based proton beam can be directed to multiple targets, producing a
low energy pion and muon decay-at-rest neutrino source with variable distance
to a single detector. Two types of detectors are considered: a germanium-based
detector inspired by the CDMS design and a liquid argon detector inspired by
the proposed CLEAR experiment.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
