Group Divisible Codes and Their Application in the Construction of Optimal Constant-Composition Codes of Weight Three
The concept of group divisible codes, a generalization of group divisible
designs with constant block size, is introduced in this paper. This new class
of codes is shown to be useful in recursive constructions for constant-weight
and constant-composition codes. Large classes of group divisible codes are
constructed which enabled the determination of the sizes of optimal
constant-composition codes of weight three (and specified distance), leaving
only four cases undetermined. Previously, the sizes of constant-composition
codes of weight three were known only for those of sufficiently large length.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, 4 table
Optimal Memoryless Encoding for Low Power Off-Chip Data Buses
Off-chip buses account for a significant portion of the total system power
consumed in embedded systems. Bus encoding schemes have been proposed to
minimize power dissipation, but none has been demonstrated to be optimal with
respect to any measure. In this paper, we give the first provably optimal and
explicit (polynomial-time constructible) families of memoryless codes for
minimizing bit transitions in off-chip buses. Our results imply that having
access to a clock does not make a memoryless encoding scheme that minimizes bit

Recent advances in numerical simulation and control of asymmetric flows around slender bodies
The problems of asymmetric flow around slender bodies and its control are formulated using the unsteady, compressible, thin-layer or full Navier-Stokes equations which are solved using an implicit, flux-difference splitting, finite-volume scheme. The problem is numerically simulated for both locally-conical and three-dimensional flows. The numerical applications include studies of the effects of relative incidence, Mach number and Reynolds number on the flow asymmetry. For the control of flow asymmetry, the numerical simulation cover passive and active control methods. For the passive control, the effectiveness of vertical fins placed in the leeward plane of geometric symmetry and side strakes with different orientations is studied. For the active control, the effectiveness of normal and tangential flow injection and surface heating and a combination of these methods is studied
Mobile phone dependence, social support and impulsivity in Chinese university students
This study examined the frequency of mobile phone dependence in Chinese university students and explored its association with social support and impulsivity. Altogether, 909 university students were consecutively recruited from a large university in China. Mobile phone use, mobile phone dependence, impulsivity, and social support were measured with standardized instruments. The frequency of possible mobile phone use and mobile phone dependence was 78.3% and 7.4%, respectively. Multinomial logistic regression analyses revealed that compared with no mobile phone dependence, possible mobile phone dependence was significantly associated with being male (p = 0.04, OR = 0.7, 95% CI: 0.4–0.98), excessive mobile phone use (p \u3c 0.001, OR = 1.2, 95% CI: 1.09–1.2), and impulsivity (p \u3c 0.001, OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.03–1.06), while mobile phone dependence was associated with length of weekly phone use (p = 0.01, OR = 2.5, 95% CI: 1.2–5.0), excessive mobile phone use (p \u3c 0.001, OR = 1.3, 95% CI: 1.2–1.4), and impulsivity (p \u3c 0.001, OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.05–1.1). The frequency of possible mobile phone dependence and mobile phone dependence was high in this sample of Chinese university students. A significant positive association with impulsivity was found, but not with social support
Assessment Cu, Ni and Zn pollution in the surface sediments in the Southern Peninsular Malaysia using cluster analysis, ratios of geochemical nonresistant to resistant fractions, and geochemical indices.
The intertidal sediment samples collected in May 2007 from 12 sampling sites in the southern part of Peninsular
Malaysia, were determined for the total concentrations of Cu, Ni and Zn and their four geochemical fractions. The total concentrations (μg/g dry weight) of Cu, Ni and Zn ranged from 9.48 to 115.82, 12.95 to 36.18 and 45.35 to 136.56, respectively.
The ratios of nonresistant to resistant fractions based on geochemical analysis revealed that the Pantai Lido and Senibong had > 1.0, indicating > 50% of the total concentrations of Cu, Ni and Cu were contributed by anthropogenic sources. This is well complemented by the cluster analysis in which Pantai Lido and Senibong are clustered together based on the three metals clustering pattern. By using Fe as a normalizing element, Cu found at Pantai Lido and Senibong showed > 1.5 for
the enrichment factor (EF), which indicated that the Cu was delivered from non-crustal materials or anthropogenic origins while all sampling sites showed Ni and Zn may be entirely from crustal materials. Based on the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) (Müller, 1981), similar pattern was also found for Pantai Lido and Senibong in which again only Cu concentrations ranged from 1-2, indicating ‘moderate pollution’ (Igeo 1 < 2; Class 2).while other sites can be considered as ‘unpolluted’
(Igeo < 0; Class 0) by Cu, Ni and Zn. Ratios of NR/R exhibited better in the assessment of polluted sites while EF and Igeo should be revised according to Malaysian sedimentary characteristics. This study should prompt more biochemical and molecular studies on the intertidal molluscs from the Straits of Johore since the identified two sites are located in the Straits of Johore, especially the commercial mussel Perna viridis
Excitonic energy transfer in light-harvesting complexes in purple bacteria
Two distinct approaches, the Frenkel-Dirac time-dependent variation and the
Haken-Strobl model, are adopted to study energy transfer dynamics in
single-ring and double-ring light-harvesting systems in purple bacteria. It is
found that inclusion of long-range dipolar interactions in the two methods
results in significant increases in intra- or inter-ring exciton transfer
efficiency. The dependence of exciton transfer efficiency on trapping positions
on single rings of LH2 (B850) and LH1 is similar to that in toy models with
nearest-neighbor coupling only. However, owing to the symmetry breaking caused
by the dimerization of BChls and dipolar couplings, such dependence has been
largely suppressed. In the studies of coupled-ring systems, both methods reveal
interesting role of dipolar interaction in increasing energy transfer
efficiency by introducing multiple intra/inter-ring transfer paths.
Importantly, the time scale (~4ps) of inter-ring exciton transfer obtained from
polaron dynamics is in good agreement with previous studies. In a double-ring
LH2 system, dipole-induced symmetry breaking leads to global minima and local
minima of the average trapping time when there is a finite value of non-zero
dephasing rate, suggesting that environment plays a role in preserving quantum
coherent energy transfer. In contrast, dephasing comes into play only when the
perfect cylindrical symmetry in the hypothetic system is broken. This study has
revealed that dipolar interaction between chromophores may play an important
part in the high energy transfer efficiency in the LH2 system and many other
natural photosynthetic systems.Comment: 14 pages 9 figure
Optimal Partitioned Cyclic Difference Packings for Frequency Hopping and Code Synchronization
Optimal partitioned cyclic difference packings (PCDPs) are shown to give rise
to optimal frequency-hopping sequences and optimal comma-free codes. New
constructions for PCDPs, based on almost difference sets and cyclic difference
matrices, are given. These produce new infinite families of optimal PCDPs (and
hence optimal frequency-hopping sequences and optimal comma-free codes). The
existence problem for optimal PCDPs in , with base blocks

Implementation of packaged integrated antenna with embedded front end for Bluetooth applications
The design, integration and realization of system in enhanced package approach towards fully functional system level integration by using a compact Bluetooth USB dongle as the demonstrator is presented here. The integration was done on FR4 substrates, which is totally compatible with today’s printed circuit board manufacturing capability. A commercially available Bluetooth integrated chip was chosen as the chipset of our demonstrator, and a package integrated antenna together with an embedded front end completes the system in package integration. The front end developed here is based on an embedded meander line combline filter and an embedded transformer balun. The filter has a 35% area reduction when compared with the classical combline filter and similar performance. The balun has the coils distributed on three layers that minimized the board area needed it and optimizes the performances. The proposed packaged integrated antenna approach is successfully demonstrated here and the new module shows excellent performance when compared with a commercial solution, surpassing the normal Bluetooth class II dongle range which is up to 10 m and increasing the module range up to 120 m without an extra power amplifier
Numerical simulation of steady and unsteady asymmetric vortical flow
The unsteady, compressible, thin-layer, Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are solved to simulate steady and unsteady, asymmetric, vortical laminar flow around cones at high incidences and supersonic Mach numbers. The equations are solved by using an implicit, upwind, flux-difference splitting (FDS), finite-volume scheme. The locally conical flow assumption is used and the solutions are obtained by forcing the conserved components of the flowfield vector to be equal at two axial stations located at 0.95 and 1.0. Computational examples cover steady and unsteady asymmetric flows around a circular cone and its control using side strakes. The unsteady asymmetric flow solution around the circular cone has also been validated using the upwind, flux-vector splitting (FVS) scheme with the thin-layer NS equations and the upwind FDS with the full NS equations. The results are in excellent agreement with each other. Unsteady asymmetric flows are also presented for elliptic- and diamond-section cones, which model asymmetric vortex shedding around round- and sharp-edged delta winds
Mercury in zooplankton from the Malacca Straits.
Total mercury concentration in mixed zooplankton was determined from near surface waters in Malacca Straits (05o 59' N, 99o 59' E and 01o 10' N, 103° 29' E). Total mercury concentrations in mixed zooplankton ranged from 1.12 to 4.68 ng dry weight g-1 with a mean of 2.08 ± 0.25 ng dry weight g-1 and showed a decreasing trend from nearshore to offshore areas. Higher mercury concentrations were found in nearshore waters (mean of 2.79 ± 0.49 ng dry weight g-1). Total mercury content was higher in the southern part of the Straits compared to the other parts. The zooplankton in the Malacca Straits environment is not heavily contaminated with mercury
