    Metales pesados en agua y macroinvertebrados de la cuenca del río Ayuquila-Armería (México) y sus afluentes

    La cuenca del río Ayuquila-Armería se clasifica como cuenca hidrográfica prioritaria de México por su alta diversidad y también por la presión ecosistémica a la que es sometida. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar las concentraciones de metales pesados (As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb y Zn) en agua y macroinvertebrados acuáticos, además de parámetros físicos y químicos (pH, C.E y caudal) en las subcuencas tributarias y el cauce principal. La presente investigación se llevó a cabo con muestreos en la temporada lluviosa en 2015, y en la temporada seca en 2016, en 18 sitios de la cuenca. En cada sitio de muestreo se realizaron determinaciones de metales pesados, parámetros físicos y químicos, colecta de macroinvertebrados acuáticos y estimación del caudal de los afluentes. En el agua superficial solo el Hg y el Pb superaron los límites permisibles para aguas naturales (0.02 y 0.0015 mg L-1 respectivamente) en el 60% de los sitios, en cuanto a las concentraciones en macroinvertebrados los seis metales superaron los límites permisibles en el 65% de los sitios con concentraciones de 0.33 a 7.07 mg kg-1, de estos el Hg (7.07 mg kg-1) y el metaloide As (5.19 mg kg-1) fueron los que presentaron las mayores concentraciones

    The diversity and evolution of pollination systems in large plant clades: Apocynaceae as a case study

    Background and Aims Large clades of angiosperms are often characterized by diverse interactions with pollinators, but how these pollination systems are structured phylogenetically and biogeographically is still uncertain for most families. Apocynaceae is a clade of >5300 species with a worldwide distribution. A database representing >10 % of species in the family was used to explore the diversity of pollinators and evolutionary shifts in pollination systems across major clades and regions. Methods The database was compiled from published and unpublished reports. Plants were categorized into broad pollination systems and then subdivided to include bimodal systems. These were mapped against the five major divisions of the family, and against the smaller clades. Finally, pollination systems were mapped onto a phylogenetic reconstruction that included those species for which sequence data are available, and transition rates between pollination systems were calculated. Key Results Most Apocynaceae are insect pollinated with few records of bird pollination. Almost three-quarters of species are pollinated by a single higher taxon (e.g. flies or moths); 7 % have bimodal pollination systems, whilst the remaining approx. 20 % are insect generalists. The less phenotypically specialized flowers of the Rauvolfioids are pollinated by a more restricted set of pollinators than are more complex flowers within the Apocynoids + Periplocoideae + Secamonoideae + Asclepiadoideae (APSA) clade. Certain combinations of bimodal pollination systems are more common than others. Some pollination systems are missing from particular regions, whilst others are over-represented. Conclusions Within Apocynaceae, interactions with pollinators are highly structured both phylogenetically and biogeographically. Variation in transition rates between pollination systems suggest constraints on their evolution, whereas regional differences point to environmental effects such as filtering of certain pollinators from habitats. This is the most extensive analysis of its type so far attempted and gives important insights into the diversity and evolution of pollination systems in large clades

    Cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancers are the most common malignancies of the female genital tract worldwide. Despite advances in prevention, early diagnosis, effective screening, and treatment programs, mortality remains high. Consequently, it is important to search for new treatments. The activity of bovine lactoferrin (bLF) and LF peptides against several types of cancer has been studied; however, only a few studies report the effect of bLF and LF peptides against cervical and endometrial cancers. In this study, we explored the effect of bLF as well as LF chimera and its constituent peptides LFcin17-30 and LFampin265-284 on the viability of cervical (HeLa, SiHa) and endometrial (KLE, HEC-1A) cancer cell lines. Cell proliferation was quantified with an MTT assay, cell morphological changes and damage were determined by Giemsa R 488 Annexin V and propidium iodide staining. Additionally, the effect of combinations of bLF and LF peptides with cisplatin was assessed. bLF and LF peptides inhibited the proliferation of uterine cancer cells and caused cellular morphological changes and damage to cell monolayers. bLF induced apoptosis, LFcin17-30 and LFampin265-284 induced apoptosis and necrosis, and LF chimera induced necrosis. Additionally, bLF and LF chimera showed an additive interaction with cisplatin against uterine cancer cells

    Blood Groups Distribution and Gene Diversity of the ABO and Rh (D) Loci in the Mexican Population

    Objective. To determine the frequency and distribution of ABO and Rh (D) antigens and, additionally, investigate gene diversity and the structure of Mexican populations. Materials and Methods. Blood groups were tested in 271,164 subjects from 2014 to 2016. The ABO blood group was determined by agglutination using the antibodies anti-A, Anti-B, and Anti-D for the Rh factor, respectively. Results. The overall distribution of ABO and Rh (D) groups in the population studied was as follows: O: 61.82%; A: 27.44%; B: 8.93%; and AB: 1.81%. For the Rh group, 95.58% of people were Rh (D), and 4.42% were Rh (d). Different distributions of blood groups across regions were found; additionally, genetic analysis revealed that the IO and ID allele showed an increasing trend from the north to the center, while the IA and Id allele tended to increase from the center to the north. Also, we found more gene diversity in both loci in the north compared with the center, suggesting population structure in Mexico. Conclusion. This work could help health institutions to identify where they can obtain blood products necessary for medical interventions. Moreover, this piece of information contributes to the knowledge of the genetic structure of the Mexican populations which could have significant implications in different fields of biomedicine

    Substance Use and Psychological Distress in Mexican Adults during COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Objectives: This observational cross-sectional study examined changes in substance use during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the Mexican population and evaluated whether depression or anxiety was associated with these new consumption patterns. Methods: An online survey was distributed to the general population. Participants were questioned about their demographics, situation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and substance consumption patterns. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depression and the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale were used. Results: A total of 866 individuals completed the survey. The mean scores for the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Coronavirus Anxiety Scale were 8.89 ± 6.20 and 3.48 ± 3.22, respectively. The preferred substances were alcohol (19%), tobacco (16.5%), and marijuana (5.6%). Consumption of alcohol (p = 0.042) significantly increased during the pandemic and it was higher in women than in men (p = 0.040). Conclusions: Substance use patterns were affected by the pandemic, with an increase in the number of users and consumption rate, as well as the reported psychiatric symptoms

    Integrating climate adaptation and transboundary management:Guidelines for designing climate-smart marine protected areas

    Climate change poses an urgent threat to biodiversity that demands societal responses. The magnitude of this challenge is reflected in recent international commitments to protect 30% of the planet by 2030 while adapting to climate change. However, because climate change is global, interventions must transcend political boundaries. Here, using the California Bight as a case study, we provide 21 biophysical guidelines for designing climate-smart transboundary marine protected area (MPA) networks and conduct analyses to inform their application. We found that future climates and marine heatwaves could decrease ecological connectivity by 50% and hinder the recovery of vulnerable species in MPAs. To buffer the impacts of climate change, MPA coverage should be expanded, focusing on protecting critical nodes for the network and climate refugia, where impacts might be less severe. For shared ecoregions, these actions require international coordination. Our work provides the first comprehensive framework for integrating climate resilience for MPAs in transboundary ecoregions, which will support other nations’ aspirations.</p
