    Un modÚle spatio-temporel sémantique pour la modélisation de mobilités en milieu urbain

    The continuous development and complexity of many modern cities offer many research challenges for urban scientists searching for a better understanding of mobility patterns that happen in space and time. Today, very large trajectory datasets are often publicly generated thanks to the availability of many positioning sensors and location-based services. However, the successful integration of mobility data still requires the development of conceptual and database frameworks that will support appropriate data representation and manipulation capabilities. The research presented in this paper introduces a conceptual modeling and database management approach for representing and analyzing human trajectories in urban spaces. The model considers the spatial, temporal and semantic dimensions in order to take into account the full range of properties that emerge from mobility patterns. Several object data types and data manipulation constructs are developed and experimented on top of an urban dataset testbed currently available in the city of Beijing. The interest of the approach is twofold: first, it clearly appears that very large mobility datasets can be integrated in current extensible GIS; second, significant patterns can be derived at the database manipulation level using some specifically developed query functions

    Evidence for a Conserved Quantity in Human Mobility

    Recent seminal works on human mobility have shown that individuals constantly exploit a small set of repeatedly visited locations. A concurrent study has emphasized the explorative nature of human behaviour, showing that the number of visited places grows steadily over time. How to reconcile these seemingly contradicting facts remains an open question. Here, we analyse high-resolution multi-year traces of ~40,000 individuals from 4 datasets and show that this tension vanishes when the long-term evolution of mobility patterns is considered. We reveal that mobility patterns evolve significantly yet smoothly, and that the number of familiar locations an individual visits at any point is a conserved quantity with a typical size of ~25. We use this finding to improve state-of-the-art modelling of human mobility. Furthermore, shifting the attention from aggregated quantities to individual behaviour, we show that the size of an individual’s set of preferred locations correlates with their number of social interactions. This result suggests a connection between the conserved quantity we identify, which as we show cannot be understood purely on the basis of time constraints, and the ‘Dunbar number’ describing a cognitive upper limit to an individual’s number of social relations. We anticipate that our work will spark further research linking the study of human mobility and the cognitive and behavioural sciences

    Understanding the interplay between social and spatial behaviour

    According to personality psychology, personality traits determine many aspects of human behaviour. However, validating this insight in large groups has been challenging so far, due to the scarcity of multi-channel data. Here, we focus on the relationship between mobility and social behaviour by analysing trajectories and mobile phone interactions of ∌1000 individuals from two high-resolution longitudinal datasets. We identify a connection between the way in which individuals explore new resources and exploit known assets in the social and spatial spheres. We show that different individuals balance the exploration-exploitation trade-off in different ways and we explain part of the variability in the data by the big five personality traits. We point out that, in both realms, extraversion correlates with the attitude towards exploration and routine diversity, while neuroticism and openness account for the tendency to evolve routine over long time-scales. We find no evidence for the existence of classes of individuals across the spatio-social domains. Our results bridge the fields of human geography, sociology and personality psychology and can help improve current models of mobility and tie formation

    The influence of intra-daily activities and settings upon weekday violent crime in public space in Manchester, UK

    People ebb and flow across the city. The spatial and temporal patterning of crime is, in part, reflective of this mobility, of the scale of the population present in any given setting at a particular time. It is also a function of capacity of this population to perform an active role as an offender, victim or guardian in any specific crime type, itself shaped by the time-variant activities undertaken in, and the qualities of, particular settings. To this end, this paper explores the intra-daily influence of activities and settings upon the weekday spatial and temporal patterning of violent crime in public spaces. This task is achieved through integrating a transient population dataset with travel survey, point-of-interest and recorded crime data in a study of Great Manchester (UK). The research deploys a negative binomial regression model controlling for spatial lag effects. It finds strong and independent, but time-variant, associations between leisure activities, leisure settings and the spatial and temporal patterning of violent crime in public space. The paper concludes by discussing the theoretical and empirical implications of these findings
