    New Physics at the International Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) Next to GSI

    The project of the international Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), co-located to the GSI facility in Darmstadt, has been officially started on November 7, 2007. The current plans of the facility and the planned research program will be described. An investment of about 1 billion euro will permit new physics programs in the areas of low and medium energy antiproton research, heavy ion physics complementary to LHC, as well as in nuclear structure and astrophysics. The facility will comprise about a dozen accelerators and storage rings, which will enable simultaneous operations of up to four different beams.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure.     Azimuthal Correlations in the Target Fragmentation Region of High Energy Nuclear Collisions

    Results on the target mass dependence of proton and pion pseudorapidity distributions and of their azimuthal correlations in the target rapidity range 1.73η1.32-1.73 \le \eta \le 1.32 are presented. The data have been taken with the Plastic-Ball detector set-up for 4.9 GeV p + Au collisions at the Berkeley BEVALAC and for 200 AA\cdotGeV/cc p-, O-, and S-induced reactions on different nuclei at the CERN-SPS. The yield of protons at backward rapidities is found to be proportional to the target mass. Although protons show a typical ``back-to-back'' correlations, a ``side-by-side'' correlation is observed for positive pions, which increases both with target mass and with impact parameter of a collision. The data can consistently be described by assuming strong rescattering phenomena including pion absorption effects in the entire excited target nucleus.Comment: 7 pages, figures included, complete postscript available at ftp://qgp.uni-muenster.de/pub/paper/azi-correlations.ps submitted to Phys.     Psychopathologie des Ganser-Syndroms: Literaturübersicht und Falldiskussion

    Zusammenfassung: Das Kernsymptom des Ganser-Syndroms besteht im "Vorbeiantworten" auf einfache Fragen. Die Ursache dieses seltenen Syndroms ist unklar. Aktuelle Klassifikationssysteme zählen es zu den dissoziativen Störungen, wobei eine psychogene Ursache der Symptome angenommen wird. Anhand einer Literaturrecherche (n=151) wird jedoch gezeigt, dass das Ganser-Syndrom sehr häufig mit Hirnverletzungen assoziiert ist, wobei detaillierte bildgebende, neuropsychologische und neurologische Untersuchungen weitgehend fehlen. Wir stellen eine rechtshändige Patientin mit einem Ganser-Syndrom nach einem großen linkshemisphärischen Mediainfarkt vor. Die detaillierte neuropsychologische Untersuchung zeigte eine untypische Lateralisierung kognitiver Funktionen mit einer sog. gekreuzten Nichtaphasie und ausgeprägten frontal-exekutiven Funktionsstörungen. Unter Berücksichtigung sowohl der psychiatrischen als auch der neuropsychologischen Aspekte wird diskutiert, in welchem Zusammenhang das psychopathologische Symptom des "Vorbeiantwortens" mit spezifischen frontal-exekutiven Hirnfunktionsstörungen stehen könnt

    The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of unilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventrointermediate (Vim) thalamic nucleus on neuropsychological functioning comparing stimulation-on with stimulation-off conditions. Nine patients [five patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), two patients with essential tremor (ET) and 2 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS)] underwent comprehensive neuropsychological testing for cognitive functions, including general mental impairment, aphasia, agnosia, executive and constructional abilities, learning, memory, cognitive processing speed and attention as well as depression. The neuropsychological assessments were performed at least 6 months postoperatively (mean 9 months). Testing in the stimulation-on and stimulation-off condition was obtained within a period of 3 to 4 weeks. Unilateral DBS resulted in improvement of tremor in all patients. There were no significant differences between the stimulation-on and the stimulation-off condition with the exception of a decrement of word-recall in the short delay free-recall subtest of the Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT). Subgroup analysis indicated that the impairment in word-recall was related to left-sided thalamic stimulation. Our study confirms that chronic unilateral DBS is a safe method with regard to cognitive function.     On Deusons or Deuteronlike Meson-Meson Bound States

    The systematics of deuteronlike two-meson bound states, {\it deusons}, is discussed. Previous arguments that many of the present non-qqˉq\bar q states are such states are elaborated including, in particular, the tensor potential. For pseudoscalar states the important observation is made that the centrifugal barrier from the P-wave can be overcome by the 1/r21/r^2 and 1/r31/r^3 terms of the tensor potential. In the heavy meson sector one-pion exchange alone is strong enough to form at least deuteron-like BBˉB\bar B^* and BBˉB^*\bar B^* composites bound by approximately 50 MeV, while DDˉD\bar D^* and DDˉD^*\bar D^* states are expected near the threshold.Comment: Invited talk at the Hadron93 International Conf. on Hadron Spectroscopy, Como, Italy 22.-25.6. 1993. 5 pages in LATEX HU-SEFT R 1993-13

    Dynamical cluster-decay model for hot and rotating light-mass nuclear systems, applied to low-energy 32^{32}S + 24^{24}Mg 56\to ^{56}Ni reaction

    The dynamical cluster-decay model (DCM) is developed further for the decay of hot and rotating compound nuclei (CN) formed in light heavy-ion reactions. The model is worked out in terms of only one parameter, namely the neck-length parameter, which is related to the total kinetic energy TKE(T) or effective Q-value Qeff(T)Q_{eff}(T) at temperature T of the hot CN, defined in terms of the both the light-particles (LP), with AA \leq 4, Z \leq 2, as well as the complex intermediate mass fragments (IMF), with 424 2, is considered as the dynamical collective mass motion of preformed clusters through the barrier. Within the same dynamical model treatment, the LPs are shown to have different characteristics as compared to the IMFs. The systematic variation of the LP emission cross section σLP\sigma_{LP}, and IMF emission cross section σIMF\sigma_{IMF}, calculated on the present DCM match exactly the statistical fission model predictions. It is for the first time that a non-statistical dynamical description is developed for the emission of light-particles from the hot and rotating CN. The model is applied to the decay of 56^{56}Ni formed in the 32^{32}S + 24^{24}Mg reaction at two incident energies Ec.m._{c.m.} = 51.6 and 60.5 MeV. Both the IMFs and average TKEˉ\bar{TKE} spectra are found to compare reasonably nicely with the experimental data, favoring asymmetric mass distributions. The LPs emission cross section is shown to depend strongly on the type of emitted particles and their multiplicities

    Can a Logarithmically Running Coupling Mimic a String Tension?

    It is shown that a Coulomb potential using a running coupling slightly modified from the perturbative form can produce an interquark potential that appears nearly linear over a large distance range. Recent high-statistics SU(2) lattice gauge theory data fit well to this potential without the need for a linear string-tension term. This calls into question the accuracy of string tension measurements which are based on the assumption of a constant coefficient for the Coulomb term.     Elliptical flow -- a signature for early pressure in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

    Elliptical energy flow patterns in non-central Au(11.7AGeV) on Au reactions have been studied employing the RQMD model. The strength of these azimuthal asymmetries is calculated comparing the results in two different modes of RQMD (mean field and cascade). It is found that the elliptical flow which is readily observable with current experimental detectors may help to distinguish different reasonable expansion scenarios for baryon-dense matter. The final asymmetries are very sensitive to the pressure at maximum compression, because they involve a partial cancelation between early squeeze-out and subsequent flow in the reaction plane. This cancelation can be expected to occur in a broad energy region covered by the current heavy ion fixed-target programs at BNL and at CERN.Comment: 14 pages LaTeX including 3 postscript figure
