    Impact of endomycorrhizal fungi and other bioinoculants on growth enhancement of Glycine max (L.) Merrill

    In the present investigation, the contributions of two indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus mosseae and Acaulospora laevis), along with Trichoderma viride and Bradyrhizobium japonicum on growth parameters of Soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill were investigated. The results obtained indicated the dependence of soybean on mycorrhizal symbiosis. The different growth parameters increased significantly after 120 days of inoculation in comparison to control. Among all the growth parameters studied, plant height (162±3.34), fresh shoot weight (31.26±1.45), dry shoot weight (3.52±0.05), fresh root weight (4.07±0.56), dry root weight (1.03±0.03), root length (49.0±4.47) and leaf area (32.58±1.70) were highest in the combination of G. mosseae + A. laevis + T. viride + B. japonicum but arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) spore number (95.2±3.19) and percent mycorrhizal root colonization (93.26±3.96) were maximum in single inoculation of G. mosseae. Second most effective results were observed in the plants treated with G. mosseae alone. Thus the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and other bioinoculants in rhizosphere of soybean had positive effect on the different growth parameters

    Comparative evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of three herbal irrigants in reducing intracanal E. faecalis populations: an in vitro study

    Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the intracanal bacterial reduction promoted by chemomechanical preparation using three different herbal extracts named Ocimum sanctum (OS), Cinnamomum zeylanicum (CZ), Syzygium aromaticum (SA) against Enterococcus faecalis. Material and Methods: Root canals from extracted teeth were contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 for 7 days and then randomly distributed into 3 experimental groups of 10 teeth each: which includes conventional irrigation with OS, CZ and SA. The control groups included 5 teeth each consisting of NaOCl (positive control) and distilled water (negative control). Samples taken before and after chemomechanical procedures were cultured, and the colony-forming units (CFUs) were counted. Bacterial identification was performed using Polymerase chain reaction technique. The statistical analyses were performed with various tests. Results: Reduction in the intracanal bacterial populations was highly significant for all the experimental groups. CZ and SA showed 80 to 85% intracanal bacterial reduction while O. Sanctum revealed only 70 to 75 % reduction. NaOCl showed 96 to 100 % bacterial reduction on the other hand distilled water showed very minimal bacterial reduction i.e 10 to 16%. Conclusions: Cinnamomum zeylanicum , Syzygium aromaticum and Ocimum sanctum showed intracanal bacterial reduction against Enterococcus faecalis . The 3 experimental groups were less effective in terms of intracanal bacterial reduction as compare to NaOCl but more effective than distilled water

    Quality of prescriptions in hospitalized children suffering from acute and persistent diarrhoea

    Background: Diarrhoea is a major public health problem in children worldwide. It continues to be a major health challenge, especially in developing countries, despite the availability of regularly updated standard treatment guidelines. Non-compliance to such guidelines by the physicians has been a long standing story. The treatment is often marred with incapacitating prescription of drugs besides neglecting even the basic tenets of good prescribing. As a result, the quality of such prescriptions for diarrhoeal disorders in children remains poor. To gauge the magnitude of this problem in this setup towards possible corrective measures, the study was aimed to audit prescription practices in the management of acute and persistent diarrhoea in hospitalised children up to five years of age.Methods: An observational study was conducted in 100 patients of either gender in the age group up to 5 years admitted with acute and persistent diarrhoea. A detailed medical history from the parents/guardians and the details of prescription from the time of admission till the discharge of the patient were obtained. Quality of prescriptions was analysed using prescription quality index (PQI) tool, a validated comprehensive tool described by Hassan et al in 2010. Based on this tool, prescription with the total PQI score of ≤ 31 were interpreted as poor quality, scores with 32 to 33 as medium quality and scores 34 to 43 as high quality with a possible maximum score of ‘43’.Results: Based on the PQI tool for 100 children, 60 prescriptions were found to be of poor quality. Only 2 prescriptions were of medium quality, whereas 38 prescriptions were in high quality range. Average mean±SD score of prescriptions with poor quality was 25.2±1.48, ranging from 21 to 31. The mean±SD of prescriptions with medium quality was observed to be 32±0 and for prescriptions of high quality was 38.07±2.28. The total average mean score of all prescriptions was 30.23±6.50. Poor quality prescriptions were particularly observed for the patients with the diarrhoea with No dehydration.Conclusions: Prescription appropriateness in spite of available guidelines continues to be a big challenge in the adequate management of patients with diarrhoeal disorders under the age group of five years in a tertiary care centre in India

    A hospital-based cross-sectional study on congenital anomalies in newborn babies of Uttarakhand

    Background: Congenital anomalies make an important contribution to infant mortality. They remain a leading cause of death in many countries of the world. The prevalence and pattern of presentation vary from place to place. Objective: The aims and objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of congenital abnormalities among babies (inborn and outborn) admitted at the Himalayan Hospital, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted in a Medical College Hospital in Uttarakhand. The case files of these babies were retrieved from the hospital records department and examined individually by the investigators. Data collection was done with structured forms designed for the study. Result: Among total 2242 neonates included in the study, the prevalence of congenital malformations was 8.3%. Central nervous system and cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and genitourinary systems were found to be most commonly involved. Conclusion: The present study provides us an idea regarding prevalence of cases of congenital malformations and factors affecting it. In Indian environment, this study helps us to know the pattern of congenital malformation in this part of the country

    Effect of rotary cutting instruments on the resin-tooth interfacial ultra structure: an in vivo study

    Objectives: To evaluate the effect of cutting teeth with different types of burs at various speeds on surface topogra - phy of tooth surface and interfacial gap formation at resin-tooth interface. Material and Methods: The human molars were divided into seven groups: Diamond bur in airrotor (DA) & mi - cromotor (DM), crosscut carbide bur in airrotor (CCA) & micromotor (CCM), plain carbide bur in airrotor (CA) & micromotor (CM) and #600-grit silicon carbide paper (SiC). In five samples from each group Class II box-only cavities were restored. The occlusal surface of four teeth per group was flattened. Two out of four teeth were acid etched. Teeth were subjected for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: Interfacial gap was observed in all groups with no significant difference. SEM observations revealed CA, CCA & DA were coarser than CM, CCM, DM and SiC. SEM of etched tooth surfaces revealed complete removal of amorphous smear layer in CA & CM, partial removal in CCA, CCM, DA & DM and no removal in SiC. Conclusions: Selecting an appropriate bur and its speed may not play an important role in bonding in terms of in - terfacial gap formation. Variable changes were observed in surface topography with different burs before and after acid etching

    Role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in global sustainable development

    Mycorrhizal symbiosis is a highly evolved mutually beneficial relationship that exists between Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and most of the vascular plants. The majority of the terrestrial plants form association with Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (VAM) or Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This symbiosis confers benefits directly to the host plant’s growth and development through the acquisition of Phosphorus (P) and other mineral nutrients from the soil by the AMF. In addition, their function ranges from stress alleviation to bioremediation in soils polluted with heavy metals. They may also enhance the protection of plants against pathogens and increases the plant diversity. This is achieved by the growth of AMF mycelium within the host root (intra radical) and out into the soil (extra radical) beyond. Proper management of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi has the potential to improve the profitability and sustainability of agricultural systems.     Transmittance behaviour of curtain fabrics under natural lighting conditions

    The light transmittance behaviour of four different coloured curtain fabrics has been studied under natural lightingconditions (morning, afternoon and evening). The intensity of incident sunlight and transmitted light from the samples aremeasured using Luxmeter, in an enclosed black chamber. The percentage of transmitted light is calculated with reference tothe incident sunlight, to study the influence of colour and number of fabric layers. It is observed that the transmittancebehaviour of curtain fabrics is highly influenced by its colour due to the spectrum of colours, which is followed by theinfluence of number of layers and sunlight conditions. Further, the transmittance % of curtain is also influenced by thewavelength of incident sunlight

    Miliary tuberculosis in an immunocompetent adolescent

    Miliary tuberculosis (TB) is a rare form of TB, seen in approximately 1-2% of all the patients with TB. It represents hematogenous dissemination of uncontrolled TB. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic has led to resurgence of TB in both developed and developing countries. Without treatment, the mortality is near 100%. With early and appropriate treatment; however, mortality can be reduced to <10%. Early diagnosis increases the likelihood of a positive outcome. A 15-year-old boy presented to the outpatient department with complaints of dry cough and fever for 2 months, along with the history of anorexia and weight loss. Clinical workup showed mild pallor, hepatosplenomegaly, and choroid tubercles. Screening for HIV antibodies was negative. X-ray chest showed miliary opacities in the bilateral lung fields. Contrast enhanced computed tomography thorax showed multiple military nodules in both lung fields, tree in bud appearance, and multiple enlarged lymph nodes. The patient was treated with 4 drugs antitubercular treatment along with oral steroids. Follow-up after 1 month showed clinical improvement

    Cord bilirubin levels as a predictive marker for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia: A prospective study

    Background: Hyperbilirubinemia is the most common medical problem in newborn infants. Early discharge is recommended but hospital readmission is a cause of concern among clinicians. This in turn carries a risk of delayed recognition of significant hyperbilirubinemia. Objective: A cross-sectional analytical study was done to evaluate the predictive value of cord bilirubin level for identifying term and near-term neonates for subsequent hyperbilirubinemia. Materials and Methods: Cord bilirubin levels at birth and subsequently serum bilirubin levels at 72 h were assessed in 100 neonates. The cutoff value was estimated beyond which there was significant hyperbilirubinemia. Results: The cutoff value of cord bilirubin >2.02 mg/dl had sensitivity and specificity of 87.5-70.8%, respectively, with positive predictive value of 0.39 and negative predictive value of 0.965 for subsequent hyperbilirubinemia. Conclusion: The cutoff value of cord bilirubin level estimated is 2.02 mg/dl can be used to predict significant neonatal hyperbilirubinemia

    Unveiling the synergistic effect of amorphous CoW-phospho-borides for overall alkaline water electrolysis

    Amorphous transition-metal-phospho-borides (TMPBs) are emerging as a new class of hybrid bifunctional catalysts for water-splitting. The present work reports the discovery of CoWPB as a new promising material that adds to the smaller family of TMPBs. The optimized compositions, namely Co4WPB5 and Co2WPB1 could achieve 10 mA/cm2 at just 72 mV and 262 mV of overpotentials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively, in 1 M KOH. Furthermore, the catalyst showed good performance in a 2-electrode assembly (1.59 V for 10 mA/cm2) with considerable stability (70 h stability, 10,000 operating cycles). Detailed morphological and electrochemical characterizations unveiled insights into the role of all elements in catalyst's improved performance. The presence of W was found to be crucial in improving the electronic conductivity and charge redistribution, making CoWPB suitable for both HER and OER. In computational simulation analysis, two configurations with different atomic environments, namely, CoWPBH and CoWPBO were found to have the lowest calculated overpotentials for HER and OER, respectively. It was found that the surface P-sites in CoWPBH were HER-active while the Co-sites in CoWPBO were OER-active sites. The study presents new knowledge about active sites in such multi-component catalysts that will foster more advancement in the area of water electrolysis
