    Processing deficits in monitoring analog and digital displays: Implications for attentional theory and mental-state estimation research

    Subjects performed short term memory tasks, involving both spatial and verbal components, and a visual monitoring task involving either analog or digital display formats. These two tasks (memory vs. monitoring) were performed both singly and in conjunction. Contrary to expectations derived from multiple resource theories of attentional processes, there was no evidence that when the two tasks involved the same cognitive codes (i.e., either both spatial or both verbal/linguistics) there was more of a dual task performance decrement than when the two tasks employed different cognitive codes/processes. These results are discussed in terms of their implications for theories of attentional processes and also for research in mental state estimation

    A new species of mudfish, Neochanna (Teleostei: Galaxidae), from northern New Zealand

    A new species of mudfish, Neochanna, is described from Northland. Neochanna heleios n.sp. is known from only three ephemeral wetland sites on the Kerikeri volcanic plateau and is abundant only at the type locality. The new species has a head resembling that of the brown mudfish, Neochanna apoda, and a caudal region resembling that of the black mudfish, Neochanna diversus. It can be distinguished from all Neochanna species in having a reduced number of principal caudal fin rays (13 or less). Morphometric and meristic comparisons with N. apoda and N. diversus are provided

    Radiation grafted membranes

    The development of proton-exchange membranes for fuel cells has generated global interest in order to have a potential source of power for stationary and portable applications. The membrane is the heart of a fuel cell and the performance of a fuel cell depends largely on the physico-chemical nature of the membrane and its stability in the hostile environment of hydrogen and oxygen at elevated temperatures. Efforts are being made to develop membranes that are similar to commercial Nafion membranes in performance and are available at an affordable price. The radiation grafting of styrene and its derivatives onto existing polymer films and subsequent sulfonation of the grafted films has been an attractive route for developing these membranes with requiredchemistry and properties. The process of radiation grafting offers enormous possibilities for design of the polymer architecture by careful variation of the irradiation and the grafting conditions. A wide range of crosslinkers are available, which introduce stability to the membrane during its operation in fuel cells. Crosslinking of the base polymer prior to grafting has also been an attractive means of obtaining membranes with better performance. A systematic presentation is made of the grafting process into different polymers,the physical properties of the resultant membranes, and the fuel cell application of these membranes

    Focusing a fountain of neutral cesium atoms with an electrostatic lens triplet

    An electrostatic lens with three focusing elements in an alternating-gradient configuration is used to focus a fountain of cesium atoms in their ground (strong-field-seeking) state. The lens electrodes are shaped to produce only sextupole plus dipole equipotentials which avoids adding the unnecessary nonlinear forces present in cylindrical lenses. Defocusing between lenses is greatly reduced by having all of the main electric fields point in the same direction and be of nearly equal magnitude. The addition of the third lens gave us better control of the focusing strength in the two transverse planes and allowed focusing of the beam to half the image size in both planes. The beam envelope was calculated for lens voltages selected to produced specific focusing properties. The calculations, starting from first principles, were compared with measured beam sizes and found to be in good agreement. Application to fountain experiments, atomic clocks, and focusing polar molecules in strong-field-seeking states is discussed.Comment: 8 pages 10 figure

    Novel ETFE based radiation grafted poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-methacrylonitrile) proton conducting membranes with increased stability

    Styrene radiation grafted ETFE based proton conducting membranes are subject to degradation under fuel cell operating conditions and show a poor stability. Lifetimes exceeding 250 h can only be achieved with crosslinked membranes. In this study, a novel approach based on the increase of the intrinsic oxidative stability of uncrosslinked membranes is reported. Hence, the co-grafting of styrene with methacrylonitrile (MAN), which possesses a protected α-position and strong dipolar pendant nitrile group, onto 25 μm ETFE base film was investigated. Styrene/MAN co-grafted membranes were compared to a styrene based membrane in durability tests in single H2/O2 fuel cells. It is shown that the incorporation of MAN considerably improves the chemical stability, yielding fuel cell lifetimes exceeding 1000 h. The membrane preparation based on the co-grafting of styrene and MAN offers the prospect of tuning the MAN content and introduction of a crosslinker to enhance the oxidative stability of the resulting fuel cell membranes

    [EN] Generalizing the concept of a probabilistic Cauchy space, we introduce quantale-valued Cauchy tower spaces. These spaces encompass quantale-valued metric spaces, quantale-valued uniform (convergence) tower spaces and quantale-valued convergence tower groups. For special choices of the quantale, classical and probabilistic metric spaces are covered and probabilistic and approach Cauchy spaces arise.     Synthesis, physicochemical and photophysical characterization of 4-(1-Pyrenyl)-Butyl-α-d-mannopyranoside

    Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus; Scielo.Glycolipids are biomolecules composed of a lipid chain (lipophilic) and a monosaccharide or oligosaccharide as hydrophilic group. Their chemical structure and biological role make them undoubtedly good candidates for a large and continuously growing number of biotechnological applications. Mannose is a carbohydrate present on membrane glycolipids of a wide number of pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses) and specifically recognized by several lectins. We synthesized a mannose derivative linked through a short methylene chain to a pyrene moiety which behaves as a surfactant, able to aggregate, and retains the photophysical properties of pyrene: showing comparable absorption and emission spectra, having lower fluorescence quantum yield and the ability to form excimer, and finally the ability to produce O-2((1)Delta(g)) with high quantum yields. Thus, this novel molecule would open future applications for detection (fluorescence) or inactivation (singlet oxygen) of bacterial pathogens, viruses, tumor cells, or particular cells.http://ref.scielo.org/pcn4d

    Cross-linker effect in ETFE-based radiation-grafted proton-conducting membranes II. Extended fuel cell operation and degradation analysis

    In this study the effect of crosslinker (divinylbenzene (DVB)) content on the chemical stability of poly(ethylene-alt-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) based membranes using an H2O2 solution was carried out. Furthermore, the first long term-testing of single H2/O2 cell over 2180h of an MEA assembled using an optimized ETFE-based membrane prepared by radiation-induced grafting of styrene / DVB and subsequent sulfonation with a graft level of 25 % was carried out. The in situ MEA properties were characterized over the testing period using auxiliary current-pulse resistance, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization and H2 permeation. It is shown that the crosslinking dramatically improves the ex situ chemical stability, while no significant trend with the crosslinker content was observed. The performance of the tested MEA exhibits a decay rate of 13 μV.h-1 in voltage over the testing time at 500 mA.cm-2 at 80°C, while the hydrogen permeation shows a steady increase over time. This indicates clearly that to some extent changes in the membrane morphology occur over the operating time.
