Importance of H2O2/Fe2+ ratio in Fenton's treatment of a carpet dyeing wastewater

    No full text
The effectiveness of the Fenton's reagent (H2O2/Fe2+) in the treatment of carpet dyeing wastewater was investigated under different operational conditions, namely, H2O2 and FeSO4 concentrations, initial pH and temperature. Up to 95% COD removal efficiency was attained using 5.5 g/l FeSO4 and 385 g/l H2O2 at a pH of 3, temperature of 50 degrees C. The H2O2/Fe2+ ratio (g/g) was found to be between 95 and 290 for maximum CO removal. It was noteworthy that, keeping H2O2/Fe2+ ratio constant within the range of 95-290, it became possible to decrease FeSO4 concentration to 1.1 g/l and H2O2 concentration to 96.3 g/l, still achieving nearly the same COD removal efficiency. The relative efficiencies of Fenton's oxidation and coagulation stages revealed that Fenton's coagulation removed organic compounds which were not removed by Fenton's oxidation, indicating that the Fenton's coagulation acted as a polishing step

Evaluation of antimycobacterial and anticonvulsant activities of new 1-(4-fluorobenzoyl)-4-substituted-thiosemicarbazide and 5-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-substituted-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione derivatives

Some new 1-(4-fluorobenzoyl)-4-alkyl/arylthiosemicarbazide (2a-g), 5-(4-fluorophenyl)4-alkyl/aryl-2,4-dihydr-3H 1,2,4-triazole-3-thione (3a-g) derivatives, 3-(benzylthio)-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole (3h) and 2-acetyl-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-phenyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione (3i) were prepared and tested for their antimycobacterial and anticonvulsant activities. The structure of compounds was confirmed by elemental analyses and spectroscopic techniques. The antimycobacterial activity of the synthesized compounds was investigated against M. fortiutum ATCC 6841 and most of them were found active against the above strain with MIC values of 64 or 32 mu g/ml. The anticonvulsant activity of the 2d, 3d-i was determined against pentylenetetrazole induced seizures. 3f-i showed anticonvulsant activity (10 to 30% protection)

Psychological domain of quality of life, depression and anxiety levels in in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycles of women with endometriosis: a prospective study

Objective To evaluate the psychological domain of quality of life (PDQoL), anxiety and depression levels of infertile women with endometriosis versus non endometriosis who applied for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Method This prospective case–control study compromised a total of 105 women who applied for IVF/ICSI program. Ninety-three women were divided into two groups as endometriosis (n = 37) and non-endometriosis (n = 56) after 12 patients who refused to participate in the study were excluded. The WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventory scales were used to determine the psychological stress levels. Results A significant difference was found between the endometriosis and non-endometriosis groups regarding depression scores, while no significant difference was reported with respect to PDQoL and anxiety (p < 0.01, p = 0.897 and p = 0.058, respectively). A weak but significant correlation was observed between depression and endometriosis (CC: 0.435, p < 0.01). Though anxiety scores were found to be higher in endometriosis group this can not reach statistical significance (p = 0.058). Impact of PDQoL, depression and anxiety scores on pregnancy outcomes were found to be insignificant. Conclusion Women with endometriosis seem to be more susceptible to depression and anxiety than women without endometriosis. Although infertility treatment outcomes are not found to be significantly affected, the impact of depression and anxiety over ART treatment success merit further research

Sirtuin 1 Levels in Recurrent Implantation Failure

Abstract Sirtuin 1 has an important role in cellular processes, including apoptosis and cellular stress. The purpose of this study was to assess serum sirtuin 1 levels in women with recurrent implantation failure (RIF). In this cross-sectional study, we included 28 women with RIF, 29 healthy women who had conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF), and 30 women with a 1-cycle failure of IVF as controls. Human serum nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent deacetylase sirtuin-1 (SIRT1/SIRT2L1) levels were detected using a commercial colorimetric kit. Recurrent implantation failure patients have higher sirtuin 1 levels than non-pregnant women and healthy pregnant women, but this difference did not reach statistical significance due to the low number of patients in our study. These higher sirtuin 1 levels may result from the inflammation imbalance of RIF patients. The only statistically significant correlation found was between age and sirtuin (r = 0.277, p = 0.009).
</div
