Associations between Maternal Technology Use, Perceptions of Infant Temperament, and Indicators of Mother-to-Infant Attachment Quality
Background: Previous research suggests parents\u27 use of technological devices, such as TV and mobile devices, within family contexts may decrease the quality of parent-child interactions. During early infancy, mothers report engaging with technological devices during infant feeding and care interactions, however, few studies have explored potential associations between maternal technology use and the quality of mother-to-infant attachment.
Aim: To examine associations between maternal technology use during mother-infant interactions and indicators of mother-to-infant attachment during early infancy.
Study design: Cross-sectional survey.
Methods: Mothers (n = 332) of infants aged 2 to 6 months were recruited via MTurk, a crowdsourcing platform, to participate in an online survey. Participants responded to a series of validated questionnaires that assessed maternal technology use during mother-infant interactions (Maternal Distraction Questionnaire), infant temperament (Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised Very Short Form), and indicators of mother-to-infant attachment, including quality of attachment, absence of hostility toward motherhood, and pleasure in mother-infant interactions (Maternal Postnatal Attachment Questionnaire).
Results: Greater technology use during mother-infant interactions was significantly associated with greater infant negative affectivity (β = 0.26, p \u3c .0001). Greater technology use was also significantly associated with lower mother-to-infant attachment quality (β = −0.21, p = .0001), and greater hostility toward motherhood (β = −0.39, p \u3c .0001). Associations between technology use and indicators of mother-to-infant attachment were not mediated by infant negative affectivity.
Conclusions: Maternal technology use was associated with greater perceptions of infant negative affectivity and poorer mother-to-infant attachment quality; further research is needed to understand mechanisms underlying these associations

The Commissioning Instrument for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument
We describe the design of the Commissioning Instrument for the Dark Energy
Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). DESI will obtain spectra over a 3 degree field
of view using the 4-meter Mayall Telescope at Kitt Peak, AZ. In order to
achieve the required image quality over this field of view, a new optical
corrector is being installed at the Mayall Telescope. The Commissioning
Instrument is designed to characterize the image quality of the new optical
system. The Commissioning Instrument has five commercial cameras; one at the
center of the focal surface and four near the periphery of the field and at the
cardinal directions. There are also 22 illuminated fiducials, distributed
throughout the focal surface, that will be used to test the system that will
map between the DESI fiber positioners and celestial coordinates. We describe
how the commissioning instrument will perform commissioning tasks for the DESI
project and thereby eliminate risks.Comment: Presented at SPIE June 2018; Proc. SPIE 10702, Ground-based and

Position statement and updated international guideline for safe and effective whole-body electromyostimulation training-the need for common sense in WB-EMS application
Whole-Body Electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) is a training technology that enables simultaneous stimulation of all the main muscle groups with a specific impulse intensity for each electrode. The corresponding time-efficiency and joint-friendliness of WB-EMS may be particularly attractive for people unable or unmotivated to conduct (intense) conventional training protocols. However, due to the enormous metabolic and musculoskeletal impact of WB-EMS, particular attention must be paid to the application of this technology. In the past, several scientific and newspaper articles reported severe adverse effects of WB-EMS. To increase the safety of commercial non-medical WB-EMS application, recommendations "for safe and effective whole-body electromyostimulation" were launched in 2016. However, new developments and trends require an update of these recommendations to incorporate more international expertise with demonstrated experience in the application of WB-EMS. The new version of these consensus-based recommendations has been structured into 1) "general aspects of WB-EMS", 2) "preparation for training", recommendations for the 3) "WB-EMS application" itself and 4) "safety aspects during and after training". Key topics particularly addressed are 1) consistent and close supervision of WB-EMS application, 2) mandatory qualification of WB-EMS trainers, 3) anamnesis and corresponding consideration of contraindications prior to WB-EMS, 4) the participant's proper preparation for the session, 5) careful preparation of the WB-EMS novice, 6) appropriate regeneration periods between WB-EMS sessions and 7) continuous interaction between trainer and participant at a close physical distance. In summary, we are convinced that the present guideline will contribute to greater safety and effectiveness in the area of non-medical commercial WB-EMS application
A translational approach to assess the metabolomic impact of stabilized gold nanoparticles by NMR spectroscopy
[EN] Gold nanoparticles have high potential in the biomedical area, especially in disease diagnosis and treatment. The application of these nanoparticles requires the presence of stabilizers to avoid their agglomeration. Nowadays, there is a lack of reliable methods for characterising the effect of stabilised nanoparticles on biological systems. To this end, in this study, we apply an experimental approach based on nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study the effect of gold nanoparticles, stabilised with cerium oxide or chitosan, on a human cancer cell model. The results showed that both systems have a significant effect, even at non-toxic levels, on the cellular antioxidant system. However, although particles functionalised with chitosan exerted a strong effect on the aerobic respiration, nanoparticles stabilised with cerium oxide had a higher impact on the mechanisms associated with anaerobic energy production. Therefore, even though both systems contained similar gold nanoparticles, the presence of different stabilizers strongly influenced their mode of action and potential applications in biomedicine. This work was supported by the Carlos III Health Institute, the European Regional Development Fund (PI16/02064 and CP13/00252) and the Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (SAF2014-53977-R, SAF2017-89229-R and RD12/0036/0025).
