Domestic well vulnerability to drought duration and unsustainable groundwater management in California's Central Valley

Millions of Californians access drinking water via domestic wells, which are vulnerable to drought and unsustainable groundwater management. Groundwater overdraft and the possibility of longer drought duration under climate change threatens domestic well reliability, yet we lack tools to assess the impact of such events. Here, we leverage 943 469 well completion reports and 20 years of groundwater elevation data to develop a spatially-explicit domestic well failure model covering California's Central Valley. Our model successfully reproduces the spatial distribution of observed domestic well failures during the severe 2012-2016 drought (n = 2027). Next, the impact of longer drought duration (5-8 years) on domestic well failure is evaluated, indicating that if the 2012-2016 drought would have continued into a 6 to 8 year long drought, a total of 4037-5460 to 6538-8056 wells would fail. The same drought duration scenarios with an intervening wet winter in 2017 lead to an average of 498 and 738 fewer well failures. Additionally, we map vulnerable wells at high failure risk and find that they align with clusters of predicted well failures. Lastly, we evaluate how the timing and implementation of different projected groundwater management regimes impact groundwater levels and thus domestic well failure. When historic overdraft persists until 2040, domestic well failures range from 5966 to 10 466 (depending on the historic period considered). When sustainability is achieved progressively between 2020 and 2040, well failures range from 3677 to 6943, and from 1516 to 2513 when groundwater is not allowed to decline after 2020

Undecidability of a weak version of MSO+U

We prove the undecidability of MSO on ω-words extended with the second-order predicate U1(X) which says that the distance between consecutive positions in a set X⊆N is unbounded. This is achieved by showing that adding U1 to MSO gives a logic with the same expressive power as MSO+U, a logic on ω-words with undecidable satisfiability. As a corollary, we prove that MSO on ω-words becomes undecidable if allowing to quantify over sets of positions that are ultimately periodic, i.e., sets X such that for some positive integer p, ultimately either both or none of positions x and x+p belong to X

Coherent acoustic vibration of metal nanoshells

Using time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy we have performed the first investigation of the vibrational modes of gold nanoshells. The fundamental isotropic mode launched by a femtosecond pump pulse manifests itself in a pronounced time-domain modulation of the differential transmission probed at the frequency of nanoshell surface plasmon resonance. The modulation amplitude is significantly stronger and the period is longer than in a gold nanoparticle of the same overall size, in agreement with theoretical calculations. This distinct acoustical signature of nanoshells provides a new and efficient method for identifying these versatile nanostructures and for studying their mechanical and structural properties.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Role of phosphoinositide 3-kinase in the autophagic death of serum-deprived PC12 cells

The death of serum-deprived undifferentiated PC12 cells shows both autophagic and apoptotic features. Since it is still controversial whether the autophagy is instrumental in the cell death or a mere epiphenomenon, we tested the effects of inhibiting the autophagy by a variety of phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitors, and provided evidence that the autophagy, or a related trafficking event, is indeed instrumental in the cell death. Furthermore, by comparing the effects of PI3-K inhibition and caspase-inhibition on autophagic and apoptotic cellular events, we showed that in this case the autophagic and apoptotic mechanisms mediate cell death by parallel pathways and do not act in serie

    Liquid crystals from poly(4,4'-methoxybiphenylyl methacrylate)

Side-chain liquid crystalline poly(4,4'-biphenylyl methacrylate) was studied by X-ray diffraction. Three smectic phases were described using a ribbon-like structural model for the polymer chain. In the smectic SP phase, ribbons lie flat on their sides to form layers with a spacing equal to the thickness of the ribbons. In the smectic SA phase, the ribbons stand upright giving layers with a thickness corresponding to the length of one extended monomeric unit. In the ordered smectic So phase, the layer thickness also corresponds to one extended repeat unit, and the pendant groups are arranged according to a two-dimensional oblique lattice. The Schlieren texture observed in the SP phase was analysed in terms of symmetry.

Phase transitions between single- and double-layered smectic structures in binary mixtures of cyano-mesogens

Binary mixtures of mesogens which exhibit respectively single-layered (A 1), double layered (A2) and partially double layered (A d) smectic phases show abrupt A2-A1 or A2-Ad transitions as a function of concentration. Double layered structures imply the formation of dimerized entities and the possibility of dimerization is discussed in terms of the amphiphilic nature of the molecules in the binary mixture (symmetrical and dissymmetrical polar mesogens). The results are analysed with respect to the thermal stability of the A 2 phase when defects are introduced in the polar interface by adding non-polar symmetrical mesogens.
