Constructing an Incidence Model for Dengue Fever applied to Paraguayan communities

    Get PDF
Comidenco aims at constructing a predictive model, focused on (but not restricted to) incidence as response variable. The model would take local variables including anti-dengue actions, evaluate the probability of spread of the disease, and predict incidence. This will identify communities with greater danger of an increase in infection rate, helping to decide where to put resources into action.CONACYT - Consejo Nacional de Ciencias y TecnologíaPROCIENCI

Feature Selection: A perspective on inter-attribute cooperation

High-dimensional datasets depict a challenge for learning tasks in data mining and machine learning. Feature selection is an effective technique in dealing with dimensionality reduction. It is often an essential data processing step prior to applying a learning algorithm. Over the decades, filter feature selection methods have evolved from simple univariate relevance ranking algorithms to more sophisticated relevance-redundancy trade-offs and to multivariate dependencies-based approaches in recent years. This tendency to capture multivariate dependence aims at obtaining unique information about the class from the intercooperation among features. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art work on filter feature selection methods assisted by feature intercooperation, and summarizes the contributions of different approaches found in the literature. Furthermore, current issues and challenges are introduced to identify promising future research and development.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    Get PDF

Nowadays, multiple phenomena have promoted an impact on society, constituting in some cases, not only a contribution of benefits but also of risks. Among them, the fake news phenomenon is considered one of the most burning phenomena today due to the risk it poses to society. In view of this situation, the research community has carried out numerous studies that seek to address this issue from a multidisciplinary perspective. Based on this, the objective of this work was to analyze the productivity and, therefore, the impact of this topic in the research community. To this end, this work advocated a scientometric-type methodology, through scientometric laws, impact indicators, and scientific evolution of 640 publications of the web of science (WOS). The results showed the impact of the fake news discipline today, which is considered an emerging issue that is of interest to many knowledge disciplines around the world. Likewise, the results showed that the publications not only have a focus on analyzing the veracity or not of the news, but that it begins to vertebrate a new line of an investigation directed to the informational education and towards the prevention of the consumption of this type of news through the internet.Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of the Government of Spain (Project reference: FPU17/05952

A Hardware/Software Platform to Acquire Bioelectrical Signals. A Case Study: Characterizing Computer Access through Attention

    Get PDF
This paper describes a hardware/software platform to acquire human body signals. In the field of physiological computing it is desirable to have a system that allows the synchronized acquisition of signals coming from different sources. Here is described how to unify the whole process of acquiring signals from both customized hardware and low cost commercial devices such as Neurosky’s mindwave. A case study using this platform is also shown: studying the feasibility of using sustained attention to access a computer. In order to do that brain activity was measured using Neurosky’s mindwave. The participants in this study were asked to keep their attention high/low for as long as possible during several trials. Experimentation was performed by 7 normally developed subjects and 3 people with cerebral palsy (CP). Our preliminary work shows that 60% of participants might be potential users of this technology. Eventually, modulating the attention to access a communication board needs a scanning period greater than 5.76s

Performance study of a synchronization algorithm for a 3-phase photovoltaic grid-connected system under harmonic distortions and unbalances

    Get PDF
In a distributed generation (DG) system, several renewable agents are connected to the low-voltage 3-phase utility grid through an inverter which is used as power condition and must guarantee the higher efficiency of the renewable agent. To attain this level of efficiency, a unitary power factor (FP) between the inverter currents and the utility grid voltages is necessary, and a synchronization algorithm is needed for the perfect synchronization between the renewable agent and the 3-phase utility grid. Within this context, this paper gives a performance study of the Positive Sequence Detector plus a Synchronous Reference Frame Phase-Locked Loop (PSD + dqPLL) as the synchronization algorithm, evaluating its accuracy under different conditions and studying their advantages and drawbacks. A grid-connected photovoltaic system with a nominal power of 6 kW is used so as to evaluate the behavior of the synchronization algorithm when the 3-phase utility grid is affected by some disturbances such as voltage unbalances, frequency variations and harmonic distortions. Firstly, several simulations with a disturbed 3-phase utility grid using MATLAB/SIMULINK from The MathWorks, Inc. are shown, and secondly, the previous tests are run in a Real-Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) platform in order to validate the obtained results with simulations. This work has been supported by a grant from La Fundación Séneca, Agencia de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Región de Murcia, Spain, as a part of the Project Ref.11948/PI/09, entitled “Design and construction of a hardware/software prototype for the synchronization and monitoring of renewable agents in a Distributed Generation System” (A. We acknowledge the researchers of the research group AreA (HUM-672), which belongs to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Junta de Andalucía and is registered in the Department of Didactics and School Organization of the Faculty of Education Sciences of the University of Granada.Recently, there has been a proliferation of technopedagogical practices, based on the application of active teaching and learning processes through the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). The main objective of this work is to analyse the impact of training action through the use of augmented reality in physical education for the development and acquisition of spatial orientation, as opposed to more traditional training based on the exhibition method. The methodology developed is quantitative, through a quasi-experimental design post-test in 140 high school students in the field of physical education. The results indicate that all of the dimensions show a very high, significant relationship. The greatest difference in average is observed in motivation. In contrast, the smallest difference, although significant, is observed in the grades given by the teachers themselves. It can be concluded that the method of teaching through augmented reality is effective in teaching high school students in the subject of physical education, especially for the acquisition of spatially oriented content.Corporacion Escuela Tecnologica del Oriente ISPRS-2017-7202Secretariat of Education of Santander ISPRS-2017-7202AreA HUM/672 Research Group of the University of Granada ISPRS-2017-720

Structural brain changes in patients with persistent headache after COVID-19 resolution

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaHeadache is among the most frequently reported symptoms after resolution of COVID-19. We assessed structural brain changes using T1- and diffusion-weighted MRI processed data from 167 subjects: 40 patients who recovered from COVID- 19 but suffered from persistent headache without prior history of headache (COV), 41 healthy controls, 43 patients with episodic migraine and 43 patients with chronic migraine. To evaluate gray matter and white matter changes, morphometry parameters and diffusion tensor imaging-based measures were employed, respectively. COV patients showed significant lower cortical gray matter volume and cortical thickness than healthy subjects (p < 0.05, false discovery rate corrected) in the inferior frontal and the fusiform cortex. Lower fractional anisotropy and higher radial diffusivity (p < 0.05, family-wise error corrected) were observed in COV patients compared to controls, mainly in the corpus callosum and left hemisphere. COV patients showed higher cortical volume and thickness than migraine patients in the cingulate and frontal gyri, paracentral lobule and superior temporal sulcus, lower volume in subcortical regions and lower curvature in the precuneus and cuneus. Lower diffusion metric values in COV patients compared to migraine were identified prominently in the right hemisphere. COV patients present diverse changes in the white matter and gray matter structure. White matter changes seem to be associ- ated with impairment of fiber bundles. Besides, the gray matter changes and other white matter modifications such as axonal integrity loss seemed subtle and less pronounced than those detected in migraine, showing that persistent headache after COVID-19 resolution could be an intermediate state between normality and migraine.Gerencia Regional de Salud (GRS) de Castilla y León, (GRS 2284/A/2020)Publicación en abierto financiada por el Consorcio de Bibliotecas Universitarias de Castilla y León (BUCLE), con cargo al Programa Operativo 2014ES16RFOP009 FEDER 2014-2020 DE CASTILLA Y LEÓN, Actuación:20007-CL - Apoyo Consorcio BUCL
