Positionally-sensitive action-ascription. Uses of Kannst du X? ‘can you X?’ in their sequential and multimodal context

Schegloff (1996) has argued that grammars are “positionally-sensitive”, implying that the situated use and understanding of linguistic formats depends on their sequential position. Analyzing the German format Kannst du X? (corresponding to English Can you X?) based on 82 instances from a large corpus of talk-in-interaction (FOLK), this paper shows how different action-ascriptions to turns using the same format depend on various orders of context. We show that not only sequential position, but also epistemic status, interactional histories, multimodal conduct, and linguistic devices co-occurring in the same turn are decisive for the action implemented by the format. The range of actions performed with Kannst du X? and their close interpretive interrelationship suggest that they should not be viewed as a fixed inventory of context-dependent interpretations of the format. Rather, the format provides for a root-interpretation that can be adapted to local contextual contingencies, yielding situated action-ascriptions that depend on constraints created by contexts of use

Non-manual Component of the Russian Sign Language

This article analyzes the features of the non-manual component in the Russian sign language. Based on the video descriptions from the Russian sign language corpus, quantitative and qualitative characteristics of such non-manual markers as eyebrow movements, articulation (labial gestures and mouthing), head movements and gaze direction are specified. As a result, conclusions are made about the role of the non-manual component in the system of natural gestural speech. Keywords: non-manual markers of the sign language, Russian sign language, multimodalit

The Legal Status of Auditors and Audit Organizations in the AML / CFT system

Money laundering has become an increasing concern to law makers in recent years, principally because of its association with terrorism. Recent legislative changes mean that auditors may become state law enforcement agencies in the private sector. We examine this legislation in terms of the changing nature of the relationship between auditors and the state and the aggregate of supervision within which it is located. According to the Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation of February 16, 2005 No. 82 [2], all lawyers, notaries and auditors are obliged to inform the state of any suspicious transactions of their clients. Keywords: money laundering, terrorist financing, auditors, audit organizations

Inhomogeneous charged pion condensation phenomenon in the NJL2_2 model with quark number and isospin chemical potentials

The properties of two-flavored massive Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime are investigated in the presence of isospin and quark number chemical potentials. The consideration is performed in the large-NcN_c limit, where NcN_c is the number of colored quarks. It is shown in the framework of this model that charged pion condensation phenomenon of dense quark/hadron isotopically asymmetric matter is rather a spatially inhomogeneous than a homogeneous one.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures; version accepted for publication in PRD. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1106.2928, arXiv:1102.407

    2-Ureido-1,3-thiazol-3-ium dihydrogen phosphate

    Get PDF
The title compound, C4H6N3OS+·H2PO4 −, (I), was obtained as a result of hydrolysis of [(1,3-thiazol-2-ylamino)carbonyl]phosphoramidic acid, (II), in water. X-ray analysis has shown that the N—P bond in (II) breaks, leading to the formation of the substituted carbamide (I). This compound exists as an internal salt. The unit cell consists of a urea cation and an anion of H2PO4 −. Protonation of the N atom of the heterocyclic ring was confirmed by the location of the H atom in a difference Fourier map. The molecules of substituted urea are connected by O⋯O hydrogen bonds into unlimited planes. In turn, those planes are connected to each other via N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds with molecules of phosphoric acid, forming a three-dimensional polymer

Request for confirmation sequences in German

In request for confirmation (RfC) sequences, interlocutors negotiate their social positions regarding access and rights to knowledge. The article presents an overview of a quantitative analysis of 200 RfCs and their responses in German conversations to highlight the relevant linguistic resources speakers of the language deployed to position themselves vis-à-vis a confirmable proposition. In German RfCs, modal particles and tags play an important role in expressing the requester’s epistemic stance; explicit inference marking is used less frequently. Responses usually include response tokens (among others doch as a token specialized for disconfirming negatively formatted RfCs) and an expansion. The article shows that such expansions do important work to tailor the response to the situated informational needs of the requester in a cooperative way beyond the constraints of type-conformity

The coordinated voltage control meets imperfect communication system.

High penetration of Distributed Generations (DGs) will have impact on the development of power systems. Due to the uncertainty of the DG output, it becomes extremely difficult to control the system voltage profile. This paper proposes a coordinated decentralized voltage control method, together with a self-excited inverter, that can control the voltage level by reactive power injection/absorption. The time-delay introduced by communications among DGs is considered to validate the proposed control approach. Simulation results show that the coodinated control approach is sensitive to the time-delay in a 33-bus medium-voltage distribution network (MVDN)
