    The Influence of Voids on the Engineering Constants of Oriented Strandboard: A Finite Element Model

    A laminated model based on continuum theory combined with finite-element analysis (FEA) was used to predict the influence of voids on engineering constants of oriented strandboard (OSB). Cylindrical voids with three material density classes in the void region were considered at various void volume fractions (VVFs) and matrix anisotropies. It was found that the presence of voids resulted in substantial decreases in the elastic moduli and Poisson ratio of OSB. The hygroexpansion coefficients were affected little by voids. The elastic constants normalized with their void-free (matrix) values were found to depend little on the anisotropy of the matrix, especially at high VVFs. Increases of material density in the void region led to increases in predicted elastic constants. The predicted moduli values for the void models with certain material densities correlated well with available experimental data for the selected panel structures. The FEA provided a comprehensive numerical tool in predicting localized elastic properties of porous OSB. The model is the basis for modeling three-layer boards and for constructing in-plane modulus map of full-size panels

    Selected Properties of Wood Strand and Oriented Strandboard From Small-Diameter Southern Pine Trees

    Thermal and mechanical properties of southern pine and willow strands and properties of southern pine oriented strandboard (OSB) from small-diameter logs were investigated in this study. The effects of density and species group on tensile strength, dynamic moduli, and thermal stability of wood strands, and of strand quality (i.e., wood fines) on three-layer OSB properties were analyzed.Strand tensile strength and dynamic storage moduli (E') increased with the increase of strand density. A large variation in both tensile strength and E' values was observed for southern pine, while willow strands showed much smaller variability. The dynamic moduli (E") of strands decreased with increase of temperature in the range of 25° to 200°C. Small loss modulus (E") peaks were observed over the temperature range studied. The strands with higher densities had higher E". Thermogravimetric analysis results revealed that high-density strands were thermally more stable than low-density strands.Three-layer OSB made of small-diameter southern pine trees showed satisfactory strength and dimensional stability properties. As the fines loading levels increased, linear expansion (LE) along the parallel direction decreased, while the LE value along the perpendicular direction and thickness swelling increased. With increased fines levels, the internal bond strength showed an increasing trend up to the 20% fines level, and bending strength and modulus varied little in the parallel direction and slightly decreased in the perpendicular direction

    Untangling Circular Drawings: Algorithms and Complexity

    We consider the problem of untangling a given (non-planar) straight-line circular drawing δG\delta_G of an outerplanar graph G=(V,E)G=(V, E) into a planar straight-line circular drawing by shifting a minimum number of vertices to a new position on the circle. For an outerplanar graph GG, it is clear that such a crossing-free circular drawing always exists and we define the circular shifting number shift(δG)(\delta_G) as the minimum number of vertices that are required to be shifted in order to resolve all crossings of δG\delta_G. We show that the problem Circular Untangling, asking whether shift(δG)K(\delta_G) \le K for a given integer KK, is NP-complete. For nn-vertex outerplanar graphs, we obtain a tight upper bound of shift(δG)nn22(\delta_G) \le n - \lfloor\sqrt{n-2}\rfloor -2. Based on these results we study Circular Untangling for almost-planar circular drawings, in which a single edge is involved in all the crossings. In this case, we provide a tight upper bound shift(δG)n21(\delta_G) \le \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor-1 and present a constructive polynomial-time algorithm to compute the circular shifting number of almost-planar drawings.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, extended version of ISAAC 2021 pape

    Left ventricular remodeling following myocardial infarction revealed with a quantitative diffusion MRI tractography framework

    A cardiac-tailored framework for 3D Diffusion Tensor MRI tractography is developed and used to characterize myofiber architecture in normal and remodeled myocardium. We show that myofibers in the subepicardium of the remote infarct zone become less oblique (more circumferential) as the heart dilates and remodels. This fiber realignment may play an important role in the loss of contractile function in the remote zone over time

    Development and application of an antigen capture ELISA assay for diagnosis of Japanese encephalitis virus in swine, human and mosquito

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a serious zoonosis caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) which is a mosquito-borne pathogen of the family <it>Flavivirus</it>. However, the application of several developed laboratory methods for the detection of JEV antigens or antibodies are limited by their requirements of laboratory operations, skilled technicians and special facilities.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To develop a method for detecting JEV antigen in swine, human, mosquito and other clinical specimens specifically, conveniently and effectively, an antigen capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was established in this study. Sensitivity, specificity, repeatability and stability of the developed method were evaluated, and 60 clinical samples were tested in this study. The results demonstrated that the antigen capture ELISA was capable in detecting JEV antigen with high sensitivity and specificity compared with conventional methods. 14 samples showed the positive result with coincidence rate of 70%, and 46 displayed negative result with coincidence rate of 100% as compared to that of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The developed ELISA assay provides a convenient and specific method for the large-scale determination of JEV antigen in infected swine, human and mosquito samples with high sensitivity and specificity.</p

    Adeno-Assocated Virus (AAV) Serotype 9 Provides Global Cardiac Gene Transfer Superior to AAV1, AAV6, AAV7, and AAV8 in the Mouse and Rat

    Heart disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Cardiac gene transfer may serve as a novel therapeutic approach. This investigation was undertaken to compare cardiac tropisms of adeno-associated virus (AAV) serotypes 1, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Neonatal mice were injected with 2.5 × 1011 genome copies (GC) of AAV serotype 1, 6, 7, 8, or 9 expressing LacZ under the control of the constitutive chicken β-actin promoter with cytomegalovirus enhancer promoter via intrapericardial injection and monitored for up to 1 year. Adult rats were injected with 5 × 1011 GC of the AAV vectors via direct cardiac injection and monitored for 1 month. Cardiac distribution of LacZ expression was assessed by X-Gal histochemistry, and β-galactosidase activity was quantified in a chemiluminescence assay. Cardiac functional data and biodistribution data were also collected in the rat. AAV9 provided global cardiac gene transfer stable for up to 1 year that was superior to other serotypes. LacZ expression was relatively cardiac specific, and cardiac function was unaffected by gene transfer. AAV9 provides high-level, stable expression in the mouse and rat heart and may provide a simple alternative to the creation of cardiac-specific transgenic mice. AAV9 should be used in rodent cardiac studies and may be the vector of choice for clinical trials of cardiac gene transfer

    Association of Visit-to-Visit Variability in Fasting Plasma Glucose with Digestive Cancer Risk

    Background and aims: The aim of this study is to investigate the association between visit-to-visit variability in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and the risk of digestive cancers among individuals with and without diabetes. Methods: Using data from Kailuan cohort, a prospective population-based study, individuals who had at least two measurements of FPG between 2006 and 2012 without prior cancer were included in this study. Four indexes of variability were used, including standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), variability independent of the mean (VIM), and average successive variability (ARV). Cox regression was used to evaluate the relationship between the quartiles of FPG variability and digestive cancers. Results: A total of 98,161 individuals were studied. Over a mean follow-up of 9.32 ± 0.81 years, 1103 individuals developed incident digestive cancer (1.21 per 1000 person-years). Compared to the individuals in the lowest quartile, those in the highest quartile of FPG variability by SD had 38.7% higher risk of developing overall digestive cancers after adjusting for the significant confounders (hazard ratio, 1.387; 95% confidence interval, 1.160-1.659; P = 0.0003). Higher FPG variability was associated with significantly higher risks of colorectal cancer (fully adjusted HR 1.432, 95% CI [1.073-1.912], P = 0.015) and pancreatic cancer (fully adjusted HR 2.105, 95% CI [1.024-4.329], P = 0.043), but not liver cancer (fully adjusted HR 1.427, 95% CI [0.973-2.092], P = 0.069) or esophageal and gastric cancer (fully adjusted HR 1.139, 95% CI [0.776-1.670], P = 0.506). Subgroup analyses showed that individuals who were younger (ConclusionsFPG variability was significantly associated with increasing risk of digestive cancers, especially for pancreatic and colorectal cancer. Our study suggested a potential role of FPG variability in risk stratification of digestive cancers. Approaches that reduce FPG variability may lower the risks of incident digestive cancers among the general population. This trial is registered with ChiCTR-TNRC-11001489

    Evaluation of portable colposcopy and human papillomavirus testing for screening of cervical cancer in rural China

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of a portable, rechargeable colposcope combined with human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, as compared with HPV testing alone, for screening of cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study among 488 women in Baoshan County, Yunnan. The women underwent HPV testing followed by Gynocular portable colposcopy with visual inspection with acetic acid. Obvious lesions were biopsied. If portable colposcopy testing was negative but HPV testing was positive, the women underwent follow-up testing with thin-prep cytology and traditional colposcopy. Cervical biopsies were performed for any abnormalities. Histopathology was followed up with diagnosis and treatment. RESULTS: Among 488 women screened with portable colposcopy, 24 women underwent biopsy based on positive colposcopy screening. Of these 24 women, three were HPV positive and 21 were HPV negative. Five women had cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) I and one had advanced cervical cancer. Forty-six women tested positive for HPV. Three of these women had screened positive on preliminary colposcopy, with one positive for CIN III/squamous cell carcinoma and one woman with CIN I. Forty-three women underwent follow-up testing with thin-prep cytology. Two women had atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance and five had low-grade squamous intra-epithelial lesions and were biopsied; three women had CIN I, one had CIN II and one had CIN III. HPV testing and portable colposcopy was more sensitive but slightly less specific than portable colposcopy or HPV testing alone. CONCLUSION: While HPV testing has high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions and portable colposcopy has lower specificity, both methods of detection have low positive predictive value and high negative predictive value. In tandem, HPV testing and portable colposcopy had higher sensitivity for detection among women who underwent biopsies. In clinical practice, portable colposcopy was an effective, easy and affordable tool to transport to villages where cytology is not currently feasible

    Structures, deformation history and dynamic background of the Qianyingzi Coal Mine in the Huaibei Coalfield, eastern China

    The Qianyingzi Coal Mine is located in the west of the Suxian Mining District of the Huaibei Coalfield, eastern China. The study on structural development patterns and genetic mechanisms in this mine lays an important foundation for safe and efficiently underground mining, and is also the key to understanding the regional tectonic evolution. In this study, based on the analysis of three-dimensional seismic, drilling and underground measured data and regional tectonic correlation, the structures, evolution history and dynamic background of the Qianyingzi Coal Mine are discussed. The Carboniferous-Permian coal measure strata in the mine are generally a gentle syncline with a NNE-trending axis, and cut by a series of faults. The faults developed in this mine are mainly medium- and small-sized with a throw of less than 20 m, and the number of reverse faults is significantly greater than that of normal faults. The strikes of reverse and normal faults are both mainly NE, followed by NNE and nearly N‒S. According to the characteristics of structural geometry, tectonic association, fault property and cross-cutting relation, the structural deformation of coal measure strata in the Qianyingzi Coal Mine can be divided into five stages, and the corresponding tectonic stress fields are NWW‒SEE compressive stress, nearly E‒W compressive stress, NW‒SE compressive stress, nearly E‒W and NW‒SE extensional stresses, respectively. It developed the Fengjia Syncline with a NNE-trending axis in the first stage and nearly N‒S-striking reverse faults in the second stage, which were the results of foreland deformation and subsequent continent-continent collision during the convergence of the North China Craton and South China Plate in the Indosinian period. The NNE-striking reverse sinistral faults and NE-striking reverse faults developed in the third stage is related to the rapid oblique subduction of the Izanagi Plate toward the East Asian continental margin at the beginning of the Early Cretaceous in the western Pacific region. Later, the fourth and fifth stages of the nearly N‒S- and NE-SW-striking normal faults were developed under the backarc extensional background in eastern China during the Early Cretaceous. These new results can be used to guide the rational arrangement for underground mining and also provide a new understanding for regional tectonic evolution of the Huaibei Coalfield
