New Focus on Retrospective Methods. Resuming Methodological Dis-cussions: Case Studies from Northern Europe. Edited by Eldar Heide & Karen Bek-Petersen.

The present anthology is rooted in collaboration that began at the 14th International Saga Conference in Uppsala in 2009, where Eldar Heide discussed the need for greater methodological awareness in studies dealing with the use of post-medieval material in the study of Old Norse religion and mythology, and also of Old Norse literature and history. This was then followed up by the founding of the Retrospective Methods Network, which started by promoting a conference the following year in cooperation with the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Bergen and has been active since. New Focus on Retrospective Methods is a collection of articles that were originally presented as papers at the conference

Scarce abundance : a critical analysis of Iceland’s renewable energy sector in times of growth’s cultural hegemony

    Get PDF
Renewable energy is increasingly gaining currency as a sustainable substitute for fossil fuels. Iceland has been framed as one of the world’s renewable energy success cases and the country’s renewable energy production has multiplied in recent decades. This thesis approaches Iceland’s renewable energy sector from a critical perspective. It investigates the dominant discourse around the expansion of the energy sector in Iceland and its social and environmental consequences. The investigation was carried out by applying Hajer’s argumentative discourse analysis. Empirical material was qualitatively collected through conducting 17 semi-structured interviews and analysing publicly available text-documents, radio and TV broadcasts. Quantitative data were gathered through a questionnaire and by reviewing official statistics. The material was analysed in light of Gramsci’s concept of cultural hegemony. Additional concepts were employed to critically highlight flaws in the dominant discourse. These concepts are: Ecological modernisation, carbon fetishism and depoliticization. The results show that a) the dominant discourse promotes an expansion of the energy sector at the expense of Icelandic nature, b) it does so – among other things – by contrasting capitalism's notion of scarcity with the notion of abundance attributed to Iceland's natural resources, c) the dominant discourse is heavily influenced by ecological modernisation (EM) and uncritically adopts its rationale and also its shortcomings, and d) the dominant discourse preserves its hegemonic status despite its inherent contradictions and negative side-effects by attempting to conceal conflicts over resource utilisation and by marginalising critical views. Despite the full adoption of EM as guiding principle for the expansion of the energy sector Iceland has not experienced the fulfilment of the promises that come with EM. In other words, a reconciliation of environment and economy has not taken place as is demonstrated by Iceland's growing CO2 emissions and environmental degradation while companies in the energy sector experience ongoing financial difficulties. This thesis concluded that environmental politics cannot be reduced to argumentative struggles, as Hajer suggests. Alternative discourses can only gain ground if the cultural hegemony of the dominant discourse is met with resistance on all levels of social life; in thoughts, norms and beliefs

    Siðbótarkonan Katarína Zell

    Get PDF
Katharina Zell (1498–1562) is amongst the relatively few women known to belong to the first generation of supporters and advocates of the Reformation. She is an important representative of women who experienced the impact of the new theology, and is best known through her writings. Katharina’s story provides a powerful example of how theological perspective is shaped by experience. Katharina had a strong sense of calling to become a servant of God, in spite of the fact that women were not allowed to enter the ordained ministry. She vigorously defended her rights to serve God in her writings, her speech, and her service to the neighbor. In all these instances she put key principles of Luther’s theology into effect. Among those theological principles were the priesthood of all believers, the estate of marriage, and Luther’s emphasis on a cross-centered theology.Peer Reviewe

"How Do You Know If It Is Love or Lust?" On Gender, Status, and Violence in Old Norse Literature

    Get PDF
This article examines attitudes towards behaviour relating to women within Old Norse literature, focusing both on chivalric romances (translated and original, the riddarasögur) and the legendary sagas (fornaldarsögur), texts that were mostly written in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The written chivalric romances arrived in Iceland from Norway and southern Europe, and thus they often exhibit different values from those found in the fornaldarsögur, which tend to reflect indigenous Nordic and heroic storytelling traditions. The article explores differences between the two traditions regarding male emotions and attitudes towards women, with an emphasis on texts in which women are abused. In particular, the article seeks to investigate the relationship between social status and gender roles in these texts, and whether a woman's rank affects her role and status according to gender. It focuses particularly on romances (especially those featuring courtly love) and fornaldarsögur in which women are either idealised as goddesses, or mistreated and even sexually abused because of their gender. The article concludes by asking how far the contrasts within the texts reflect a Norse 'emotional community,' as compared with continental European values, and whether these textual differences reflect actual difference in the social expressions of emotional behaviour

Cancer drugs as drivers of antibiotic resistance

    Get PDF
Antibiotics are the cornerstone for modern medicine, and their introduction into clinical use has made common medical procedures such as surgeries and cancer chemotherapy possible. The consequences of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), if it continues to rise on a global scale at its current speed, are expected to be staggering. It is well-known that antibiotics drive the evolution and spread of AMR, but the extent to which non-antibiotic drugs can do the same remains largely unknown. In this thesis, I have investigated whether drugs used in cancer therapy may drive AMR evolution in the common gut bacteria Escherichia coli. I screened a panel of 73 oncology compounds against 11 common AMR mechanisms, looking for combinations where expressing AMR gives bacteria fitness advantages in the presence of antineoplastic agents. Of the 23 strongest combinations identified in the screen, an in-depth study looking into the effects on bacterial evolution and the underlying molecular mechanisms has been conducted for one agent. I show that the widely used cytotoxic drug methotrexate (MTX), used both in the treatment of cancer as well as for many autoimmune diseases, can not only cause high-level trimethoprim (TMP) resistance at a wide range of concentrations. Furthermore, I have demonstrated that selection for TMP resistance takes place at MTX concentrations well below the concentrations known to inhibit growth. This is especially problematic when TMP resistance is plasmid-mediated, as MTX exposure will then select for practically any AMR determinant co-expressed on the same plasmid. With this work, we provide valuable insights into the effects that drugs used in cancer chemotherapy have on AMR evolution. A better understanding of the drivers of resistance, especially those directly affecting vulnerable patient groups, is essential if we hope to curb the spread and evolution of AMR
