    Lightning current waveform measuring system

    Get PDF
An apparatus is described for monitoring current waveforms produced by lightning strikes which generate currents in an elongated cable. These currents are converted to voltages and to light waves for being transmitted over an optical cable to a remote location. At the remote location, the waves are reconstructed back into electrical waves for being stored into a memory. The information is stored within the memory with a timing signal so that only different signals need be stored in order to reconstruct the wave form

A real-time digital program for estimating aircraft stability and control parameters from flight test data by using the maximum likelihood method

    Get PDF
A computer program (Langley program C1123) has been developed for estimating aircraft stability and control parameters from flight test data. These parameters are estimated by the maximum likelihood estimation procedure implemented on a real-time digital simulation system, which uses the Control Data 6600 computer. This system allows the investigator to interact with the program in order to obtain satisfactory results. Part of this system, the control and display capabilities, is described for this program. This report also describes the computer program by presenting the program variables, subroutines, flow charts, listings, and operational features. Program usage is demonstrated with a test case using pseudo or simulated flight data

A Stochastic Budgeting Analysis of Three Alternative Scenarios to Convert from Beef-Cattle Farming to Game Ranching

    Get PDF
The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the profitability and financial feasibility of three alternative scenarios to convert from beef-cattle farming to game ranching. The analyses acknowledge the importance of quantifying the probability of failure or success when making investment decisions. Risk is incorporated into a standard net present value analysis using risk simulation. De-trended historical auction prices of live game and on-the-hoof prices of weaner cattle were used to quantify price variability. The stochastic net present value analyses indicate that game ranching is more profitable than cattle farming. Although an investment in a limited number of common game species is financially feasible, the cash flow analysis indicates a decreasing probability of making more money with game when annual cash flows are compared to those generated by means of cattle farming. Both the high-value game species scenarios are financially unfeasible during the first five years. These infeasibilities stem from a high probability of not covering instalments to finance game purchases, the extent to which these instalments are not covered, and the high probability of shortfalls in consecutive years.Game ranching, profitability, financial feasibility, risk simulation, Agricultural Finance, Farm Management, Livestock Production/Industries,

Uniformly Accelerated Mirrors. Part 1: Mean Fluxes

The Davies-Fulling model describes the scattering of a massless field by a moving mirror in 1+1 dimensions. When the mirror travels under uniform acceleration, one encounters severe problems which are due to the infinite blue shift effects associated with the horizons. On one hand, the Bogoliubov coefficients are ill-defined and the total energy emitted diverges. On the other hand, the instantaneous mean flux vanishes. To obtained well-defined expressions we introduce an alternative model based on an action principle. The usefulness of this model is to allow to switch on and off the interaction at asymptotically large times. By an appropriate choice of the switching function, we obtain analytical expressions for the scattering amplitudes and the fluxes emitted by the mirror. When the coupling is constant, we recover the vanishing flux. However it is now followed by transients which inevitably become singular when the switching off is performed at late time. Our analysis reveals that the scattering amplitudes (and the Bogoliubov coefficients) should be seen as distributions and not as mere functions. Moreover, our regularized amplitudes can be put in a one to one correspondence with the transition amplitudes of an accelerated detector, thereby unifying the physics of uniformly accelerated systems. In a forthcoming article, we shall use our scattering amplitudes to analyze the quantum correlations amongst emitted particles which are also ill-defined in the Davies-Fulling model in the presence of horizons.Comment: 23 pages, 7 postscript figure

Understanding resource choice at the transition from foraging to farming: An application of palaeodistribution modelling to the Neolithic of the Konya Plain, south-central Anatolia, Turkey

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd The role of the environment in shaping agricultural origins is still not fully understood, despite a century of debate on this topic. Comparison of the expected prevalence of a resource in the landscape with actual archaeological presence of the same resource can provide a metric for assessing resource choice in prehistory. However, the palaeoenvironmental data that would allow resource choice to be evaluated in this way are rarely available. Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) techniques allow independent palaeoenvironmental datasets to be computed, which when compared to actual species’ presence at sites as attested by archaeological datasets, can provide data on resource choice. Following recent calls for SDM to be applied more widely in archaeological contexts, we outline a simple method for predicting the presence of plant species in prehistory using modern analogues and palaeoclimatic datasets. These modelled distributions provide an independent dataset for comparison with archaeological data, thus providing a window into human resource choice in prehistory. We outline the method with specific reference to the transition from foraging to farming in the Neolithic of Central Anatolia, but the method could be applied to any period or region. We have used exclusively open source data and provided all code in our online supplementary materials, so that our method can be utilized by researchers interested in human resource choice in any region of the world and any period

Thermodynamic basis of the concept of "recombination resistances"

The concept of "recombination resistance" introduced by Shockley and Read (Phys. Rev. 87, 835 (1952)) is discussed within the framework of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes ruled by the principle of the minimum rate of entropy production. It is shown that the affinities of recombination processes represent "voltages" in a thermodynamic Ohm-like law where the net rates of recombinations represent the "currents". The quantities thus found allow for the definition of the "dissipated power" which is to be related to the rate of entropy production of the recombination processes dealt with.Comment: Submitted to Phys.
