    Towards mirror symmetry for varieties of general type

    The goal of this paper is to propose a theory of mirror symmetry for varieties of general type. Using Landau–Ginzburg mirrors as motivation, we describe the mirror of a hypersurface of general type (and more generally varieties of non-negative Kodaira dimension) as the critical locus of the zero fibre of a certain Landau–Ginzburg potential. The critical locus carries a perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles. Our main result shows that one obtains the interchange of Hodge numbers expected in mirror symmetry. This exchange is between the Hodge numbers of the hypersurface and certain Hodge numbers defined using a mixed Hodge structure on the hypercohomology of the perverse sheaf.This work was partially supported by NSF grant 0854987.     In Indonesia, the announcement of a stock split becomes meaningful for investors and potential investors in terms of decision making. Stock split is a form of information that is carried out by issuers to increase the number of shares outstanding. The reason for issuers to do a stock split is that the price of the shares is not too high and is easily reached by investors and can increase liquidity. The purpose of this research is to look at the effect of stock split on stock prices by looking at abnormal return movements and trading volume activity. The population in this study were 58 companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange that did a stock split in 2015-2018, while the sample in this study was 27 companies. Sampling was done by puposive sampling and data analysis techniques using Uji-t paired simple t-test. based on analysis with a significant level of 5%, it can be seen that the abnormal return shows the results of p-value (0.062)> a (0.05), which means that Ho is accepted and Hi is rejected, or there is no influence between abnormal returns before and after the stock split. In stock trading volume (TVA), shows the results of p-value (0.017) <a (0.05) which means that Ho is rejected and Hi is accepted, or there is an influence between trading volume activity before and after the stock split

    Quantum-Dense Metrology

    Quantum metrology utilizes entanglement for improving the sensitivity of measurements. Up to now the focus has been on the measurement of just one out of two non-commuting observables. Here we demonstrate a laser interferometer that provides information about two non-commuting observables, with uncertainties below that of the meter's quantum ground state. Our experiment is a proof-of-principle of quantum dense metrology, and uses the additional information to distinguish between the actual phase signal and a parasitic signal due to scattered and frequency shifted photons. Our approach can be readily applied to improve squeezed-light enhanced gravitational-wave detectors at non-quantum noise limited detection frequencies in terms of a sub shot-noise veto-channel.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; includes supplementary material

    Ablative efficiency of 532-nm laser vaporization compared to transurethral resection of the prostate: results from a prospective three-dimensional ultrasound volumetry study

    Purpose: To assess and compare postoperative prostate volume changes following 532-nm laser vaporization (LV) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). To investigate whether differences in volume reduction are associated with differences in clinical outcome. Methods: In this prospective, non-randomized study, 184 consecutive patients undergoing 120W LV (n=98) or TURP (n=86) were included. Transrectal three-dimensional ultrasound and planimetric volumetry of the prostate were performed preoperatively, after catheter removal, 6weeks, 6 and 12months. Additionally, clinical outcome parameters were recorded. Mann-Whitney U test and analysis of covariance were utilized for statistical analysis. Results: Postoperatively, a significant prostate volume reduction was detectable in both groups. However, the relative volume reduction was lower following LV (18.4 vs. 34.7%, p40ml. Re-operations were necessary in three patients following LV. Conclusions: The modest but significantly lower volume reduction following LV was associated with a lower PSA reduction, a lower Q max and more re-operations. Given the lack of long-term results after LV, our results are helpful for preoperative patient counseling. Patients with large prostates and no clear indication for the laser might not benefit from the procedure

    Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context

    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts

    Pan-cancer Alterations of the MYC Oncogene and Its Proximal Network across the Cancer Genome Atlas

    Although theMYConcogene has been implicated incancer, a systematic assessment of alterations ofMYC, related transcription factors, and co-regulatoryproteins, forming the proximal MYC network (PMN),across human cancers is lacking. Using computa-tional approaches, we define genomic and proteo-mic features associated with MYC and the PMNacross the 33 cancers of The Cancer Genome Atlas.Pan-cancer, 28% of all samples had at least one ofthe MYC paralogs amplified. In contrast, the MYCantagonists MGA and MNT were the most frequentlymutated or deleted members, proposing a roleas tumor suppressors.MYCalterations were mutu-ally exclusive withPIK3CA,PTEN,APC,orBRAFalterations, suggesting that MYC is a distinct onco-genic driver. Expression analysis revealed MYC-associated pathways in tumor subtypes, such asimmune response and growth factor signaling; chro-matin, translation, and DNA replication/repair wereconserved pan-cancer. This analysis reveals insightsinto MYC biology and is a reference for biomarkersand therapeutics for cancers with alterations ofMYC or the PMN

    Spatial Organization and Molecular Correlation of Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocytes Using Deep Learning on Pathology Images

    Beyond sample curation and basic pathologic characterization, the digitized H&E-stained images of TCGA samples remain underutilized. To highlight this resource, we present mappings of tumorinfiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) based on H&E images from 13 TCGA tumor types. These TIL maps are derived through computational staining using a convolutional neural network trained to classify patches of images. Affinity propagation revealed local spatial structure in TIL patterns and correlation with overall survival. TIL map structural patterns were grouped using standard histopathological parameters. These patterns are enriched in particular T cell subpopulations derived from molecular measures. TIL densities and spatial structure were differentially enriched among tumor types, immune subtypes, and tumor molecular subtypes, implying that spatial infiltrate state could reflect particular tumor cell aberration states. Obtaining spatial lymphocytic patterns linked to the rich genomic characterization of TCGA samples demonstrates one use for the TCGA image archives with insights into the tumor-immune microenvironment
