Absence of magnetic long range order in YCrSbO: bond-disorder induced magnetic frustration in a ferromagnetic pyrochlore
The consequences of nonmagnetic-ion dilution for the pyrochlore family
Y()O ( = magnetic ion, = nonmagnetic
ion) have been investigated. As a first step, we experimentally examine the
magnetic properties of YCrSbO ( = 0.5), in which the magnetic
sites (Cr) are percolative. Although the effective Cr-Cr spin exchange
is ferromagnetic, as evidenced by a positive Curie-Weiss temperature,
= 20.1(6) K, our high-resolution neutron powder
diffraction measurements detect no sign of magnetic long range order down to 2
K. In order to understand our observations, we performed numerical simulations
to study the bond-disorder introduced by the ionic size mismatch between
and . Based on these simulations, bond-disorder ( 0.23)
percolates well ahead of site-disorder ( 0.61). This model
successfully reproduces the critical region (0.2 < < 0.25) for the N\'eel
to spin glass phase transition in Zn(CrGa)O, where
the Cr/Ga-sublattice forms the same corner-sharing tetrahedral network as the
-sublattice in Y()O, and the rapid drop in
magnetically ordered moment in the N\'eel phase [Lee , Phys. Rev. B
77, 014405 (2008)]. Our study stresses the nonnegligible role of bond-disorder
on magnetic frustration, even in ferromagnets

Hot and Diffuse Clouds near the Galactic Center Probed by Metastable H3+
Using an absorption line from the metastable (J, K) = (3, 3) level of H3+
together with other lines of H3+ and CO observed along several sightlines, we
have discovered a vast amount of high temperature (T ~ 250 K) and low density
(n ~ 100 cm-3) gas with a large velocity dispersion in the Central Molecular
Zone (CMZ) of the Galaxy, i.e., within 200 pc of the center. Approximately
three fourths of the H3+ along the line of sight to the brightest source we
observed, the Quintuplet object GCS 3-2, is inferred to be in the CMZ, with the
remaining H3+ located in intervening spiral arms. About half of H3+ in the CMZ
has velocities near ~ - 100 km s-1 indicating that it is associated with the
180 pc radius Expanding Molecular Ring which approximately forms outer boundary
of the CMZ. The other half, with velocities of ~ - 50 km s-1 and ~ 0 km s-1, is
probably closer to the center. CO is not very abundant in those clouds. Hot and
diffuse gas in which the (3, 3) level is populated was not detected toward
several dense clouds and diffuse clouds in the Galactic disk where large column
densities of colder H3+ have been reported previously. Thus the newly
discovered environment appears to be unique to the CMZ. The large observed H3+
column densities in the CMZ suggests an ionization rate much higher than in the
diffuse interstellar medium in the Galactic disk. Our finding that the H3+ in
the CMZ is almost entirely in diffuse clouds indicates that the reported volume
filling factor (f ≥ 0.1) for n ≥ 104 cm-3 clouds in the CMZ is an
overestimate by at least an order of magnitude.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures, 3 table
Internal Friction and Vulnerability of Mixed Alkali Glasses
Based on a hopping model we show how the mixed alkali effect in glasses can
be understood if only a small fraction c_V ofthe available sites for the mobile
ions is vacant. In particular, we reproduce the peculiar behavior of the
internal friction and the steep fall (''vulnerability'') of the mobility of the
majority ion upon small replacements by the minority ion. The single and mixed
alkali internal friction peaks are caused by ion-vacancy and ion-ion exchange
processes. If c_V is small, they can become comparable in height even at small
mixing ratios. The large vulnerability is explained by a trapping of vacancies
induced by the minority ions. Reasonable choices of model parameters yield
typical behaviors found in experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Magnetic Field Morphology of Orion-IRc2 from 86 GHz SiO Maser Polarization Images
In an attempt to probe the magnetic field morphology near the massive young
star Orion-IRc2, we mapped the linear polarization of its J=2-1 SiO masers, in
both the v=0 and v=1 vibrational levels, with 0.5 arcsec resolution. The
intense v=1 masers are confined to a narrow zone 40 AU from the star. Their
polarization position angles vary significantly on time scales of years. For
the v=1 masers the stimulated emission rate R is likely to exceed the Zeeman
splitting g\Omega due to any plausible magnetic field; in this case the maser
polarization need not correlate with the field direction. The much weaker v=0
masers in the ground vibrational level lie 100-700 AU from IRc2, in what
appears to be a flared disk. Their fractional polarizations are as high as 50%.
The polarization position angles vary little across the line profile or the
emission region, and appear to be stable in time. The position angle, P.A. = 80
degrees, we measure for the J=2-1 masers differs by 70 degrees from that
measured for the J=1-0 SiO transition, possibly because of Faraday rotation in
the foreground, Orion A, HII region. A rotation measure RM = 3.3 \times 10^4
rad m is required to bring the J=2-1 and J=1-0 position angles into
concordance. The intrinsic polarization position angle for both transitions is
then 57 degrees, parallel to the plane of the putative disk. Probably the
magnetic field threads the disk poloidally. There is little evidence for a
pinched or twisted field near the star.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap
Development of a new biochemical test to diagnose and monitor neuroblastoma in Vietnam: Homovanillic and vanillylmandelic acid by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry
Objectives<br> The aim of this study was to develop an accurate robust testing method to simultaneously measure urine levels of HVA and VMA using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) and to establish age-specific reference intervals of HVA and VMA in random urines for Vietnamese children.<p></p>Design and methods<br> The assay for urinary HVA and VMA was developed based on a classical urinary organic acid profiling method. Briefly, this incorporated 3-phenyl butyric acid as the internal standard and liquid–liquid extraction with ethyl acetate followed by derivatization with BSTFA. The Agilent 7890A GC and 5975C Mass Selective Detector in single ion monitoring mode was used for analysis.<p></p> Reference intervals were developed from random urine samples collected from 634 disease free Vietnamese children and compared to 50 known neuroblastoma patient samples. Results were reported relative to creatinine concentration. Age related 95% reference intervals for urinary HVA and VMA were estimated from sample quantiles. The analytes (expressed as analyte/creatinine ratios) diagnostic values were determined by calculating the related sensitivity, specificity and likelihood ratios.<p></p> Results<br> HVA and VMA were linear to at least 193 and 221 μmol/L, respectively. The limit of quantitation for both analytes was 0.9 μmol/L. Using the bi-level control (n = 15), the within-batch coefficients of variations (CVs) were less than 3% for both analytes across the assay range. The between-batch CVs (n = 20 over three months), were 3.6% at 11 μmol/L and 2.1% at 88 μmol/L for HVA, 6.6% at 18.2 μmol/L and 2.6% at 90.6 μmol/L for VMA.<p></p> Vietnamese age related reference intervals were established for urinary HVA and VMA per creatinine. HVA for children < 6 months (n = 91) was 5.3–37.0 μmol/mmol; 6 months to < 1 year (n = 141) was 2.7–27.7 μmol/mmol; 1 to 5 years (n = 139) was 3.4–17.9 μmol/mmol; 6 to 10 years (n = 136) was 2.7–8.8 μmol/mmol; and 11 to 15 years (n = 127) was 1.1–9.4 μmol/mmol. VMA for children < 6 months was 1.8–12.2 μmol/mmol; 6 months to < 1 year was 1.5–9.3 μmol/mmol; 1 to 5 years was 1.9–7.8 μmol/mmol; 6 to 10 years was 1.6–5.1 μmol/mmol; and 11 to 15 years was < 0.9–6.3 μmol/mmol.<p></p> Conclusions<br> A robust testing method for simultaneous quantitation of urinary HVA and VMA by GCMS was developed. This method is accurate, precise and fit for its clinical purpose and suitable for developing countries. Age-related reference intervals of urinary HVA and VMA were established for Vietnamese children and the intervals declined progressively with increasing age for each analyte
Velocity Map Imaging the Scattering Plane of Gas Surface Collisions
The ability of gas-surface dynamics studies to resolve the velocity
distribution of the scattered species in the 2D sacattering plane has been
limited by technical capabilities and only a few different approaches have been
explored in recent years. In comparison, gas-phase scattering studies have been
transformed by the near ubiquitous use of velocity map imaging. We describe an
innovative means of introducing a surface within the electric field of a
typical velocity map imaging experiment. The retention of optimum velocity
mapping conditions was demonstrated by measurements of iodomethane-d3
photodissociation and SIMION calculations. To demonstrate the systems
capabilities the velocity distributions of ammonia molecules scattered from a

A near-infrared interferometric survey of debris disk stars. I. Probing the hot dust content around epsilon Eridani and tau Ceti with CHARA/FLUOR
We probed the first 3AU around tau Ceti and epsilon Eridani with the CHARA
array (Mt Wilson, USA) in order to gauge the 2micron excess flux emanating from
possible hot dust grains in the debris disks and to also resolve the stellar
photospheres. High precision visibility amplitude measurements were performed
with the FLUOR single mode fiber instrument and telescope pairs on baselines
ranging from 22 to 241m of projected length. The short baseline observations
allow us to disentangle the contribution of an extended structure from the
photospheric emission, while the long baselines constrain the stellar diameter.
We have detected a resolved emission around tau Cet, corresponding to a
spatially integrated, fractional excess flux of 0.98 +/- 0.21 x 10^{-2} with
respect to the photospheric flux in the K'-band. Around eps Eri, our
measurements can exclude a fractional excess of greater than 0.6x10^{-2}
(3sigma). We interpret the photometric excess around tau Cet as a possible
signature of hot grains in the inner debris disk and demonstrate that a faint,
physical or background, companion can be safely excluded. In addition, we
measured both stellar angular diameters with an unprecedented accuracy:
Theta_LD(tau Cet)= 2.015 +/- 0.011 mas and Theta_LD(eps Eri)=2.126 +/- 0.014

Matrix controlled channel diffusion of sodium in amorphous silica
To find the origin of the diffusion channels observed in sodium-silicate
glasses, we have performed classical molecular dynamics simulations of
NaO--4SiO during which the mass of the Si and O atoms has been
multiplied by a tuning coefficient. We observe that the channels disappear and
that the diffusive motion of the sodium atoms vanishes if this coefficient is
larger than a threshold value. Above this threshold the vibrational states of
the matrix are not compatible with those of the sodium ions. We interpret hence
the decrease of the diffusion by the absence of resonance conditions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Provision of social norm feedback to high prescribers of antibiotics in general practice: a pragmatic national randomised controlled trial
SummaryBackgroundUnnecessary antibiotic prescribing contributes to antimicrobial resistance. In this trial, we aimed to reduce unnecessary prescriptions of antibiotics by general practitioners (GPs) in England.MethodsIn this randomised, 2 × 2 factorial trial, publicly available databases were used to identify GP practices whose prescribing rate for antibiotics was in the top 20% for their National Health Service (NHS) Local Area Team. Eligible practices were randomly assigned (1:1) into two groups by computer-generated allocation sequence, stratified by NHS Local Area Team. Participants, but not investigators, were blinded to group assignment. On Sept 29, 2014, every GP in the feedback intervention group was sent a letter from England's Chief Medical Officer and a leaflet on antibiotics for use with patients. The letter stated that the practice was prescribing antibiotics at a higher rate than 80% of practices in its NHS Local Area Team. GPs in the control group received no communication. The sample was re-randomised into two groups, and in December, 2014, GP practices were either sent patient-focused information that promoted reduced use of antibiotics or received no communication. The primary outcome measure was the rate of antibiotic items dispensed per 1000 weighted population, controlling for past prescribing. Analysis was by intention to treat. This trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, number ISRCTN32349954, and has been completed.FindingsBetween Sept 8 and Sept 26, 2014, we recruited and assigned 1581 GP practices to feedback intervention (n=791) or control (n=790) groups. Letters were sent to 3227 GPs in the intervention group. Between October, 2014, and March, 2015, the rate of antibiotic items dispensed per 1000 population was 126·98 (95% CI 125·68–128·27) in the feedback intervention group and 131·25 (130·33–132·16) in the control group, a difference of 4·27 (3·3%; incidence rate ratio [IRR] 0·967 [95% CI 0·957–0·977]; p<0·0001), representing an estimated 73 406 fewer antibiotic items dispensed. In December, 2014, GP practices were re-assigned to patient-focused intervention (n=777) or control (n=804) groups. The patient-focused intervention did not significantly affect the primary outcome measure between December, 2014, and March, 2015 (antibiotic items dispensed per 1000 population: 135·00 [95% CI 133·77–136·22] in the patient-focused intervention group and 133·98 [133·06–134·90] in the control group; IRR for difference between groups 1·01, 95% CI 1·00–1·02; p=0·105).InterpretationSocial norm feedback from a high-profile messenger can substantially reduce antibiotic prescribing at low cost and at national scale; this outcome makes it a worthwhile addition to antimicrobial stewardship programmes.FundingPublic Health England
