Funneled angle landscapes for helical proteins
We use crystallographic data for four helical iron proteins (cytochrome c-b₅₆₂, cytochrome c′, sperm whale myoglobin, human cytoglobin) to calculate radial and angular signatures as each unfolds from the native state stepwise though four unfolded states. From these data we construct an angle phase diagram to display the evolution of each protein from its native state; and, in turn, the phase diagram is used to construct a funneled angle landscape for comparison with the topography of its folding energy landscape. We quantify the departure of individual helical and turning regions from the areal, angular profile of corresponding regions of the native state. This procedure allows us to identify the similarities and differences among individual helical and turning regions in the early stages of unfolding of the four helical heme proteins
Fluid-Induced Propulsion of Rigid Particles in Wormlike Micellar Solutions
In the absence of inertia, a reciprocal swimmer achieves no net motion in a
viscous Newtonian fluid. Here, we investigate the ability of a reciprocally
actuated particle to translate through a complex fluid that possesses a network
using tracking methods and birefringence imaging. A geometrically polar
particle, a rod with a bead on one end, is reciprocally rotated using magnetic
fields. The particle is immersed in a wormlike micellar (WLM) solution that is
known to be susceptible to the formation of shear bands and other localized
structures due to shear-induced remodeling of its microstructure. Results show
that the nonlinearities present in this WLM solution break time-reversal
symmetry under certain conditions, and enable propulsion of an artificial
"swimmer." We find three regimes dependent on the Deborah number (De): net
motion towards the bead-end of the particle at low De, net motion towards the
rod-end of the particle at intermediate De, and no appreciable propulsion at
high De. At low De, where the particle time-scale is longer then the fluid
relaxation time, we believe that propulsion is caused by an imbalance in the
fluid first normal stress differences between the two ends of the particle
(bead and rod). At De~1, however, we observe the emergence of a region of
network anisotropy near the rod using birefringence imaging. This anisotropy
suggests alignment of the micellar network, which is "locked in" due to the
shorter time-scale of the particle relative to the fluid
Nano-scale analysis of titanium dioxide fingerprint-development powders
Titanium dioxide based powders are regularly used in the development of latent fingerprints on dark surfaces. For analysis of prints on adhesive tapes, the titanium dioxide is suspended in a surfactant and used in the form of a small particle reagent (SPR). Analysis of commercially available products shows varying levels of effectiveness of print development, with some powders adhering to the background as well as the print. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of prints developed with different powders show a range of levels of aggregation of particles.
Analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the fingerprint powder shows TiO2 particles with a surrounding coating, tens of nanometres thick, consisting of Al and Si rich material. X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to determine the composition and chemical state of the surface of the powders; with a penetration depth of approximately 10nm, this technique demonstrates differing Ti: Al: Si ratios and oxidation states between the surfaces of different powders. Levels of titanium detected with this technique demonstrate variation in the integrity of the surface coating. The thickness, integrity and composition of the Al/Si-based coating is related to the level of aggregation of TiO2 particles and efficacy of print development
Lifetime cost effectiveness of simvastatin in a range of risk groups and age groups derived from a randomised trial of 20,536 people
<i>Objectives</i>: To evaluate the cost effectiveness of 40 mg simvastatin daily continued for life in people of different ages with differing risks of vascular disease.
Design A model developed from a randomised trial was used to estimate lifetime risks of vascular events and costs of treatment and hospital admissions in the United Kingdom.
<i>Setting</i>: 69 hospitals in the UK.
<i>Participants</i>: 20 536 men and women (aged 40-80) with coronary disease, other occlusive arterial disease, or diabetes.
<i>Interventions</i>: 40 mg simvastatin daily versus placebo for an average of 5 years.
<i>Main</i> <i>outcome</i> <i>measures</i>: Cost effectiveness of 40 mg simvastatin daily expressed as additional cost per life year gained. Major vascular event defined as non-fatal myocardial infarction or death from coronary disease, any stroke, or revascularisation procedure. Results were extrapolated to younger and older age groups at lower risk of vascular disease than were studied directly, as well as to lifetime treatment.
<i>Results</i>: At the April 2005 UK price of ÂŁ4.87 (€7; $9) per 28 day pack of generic 40 mg simvastatin, lifetime treatment was cost saving in most age groups and vascular disease risk groups studied directly. Gains in life expectancy and cost savings decreased with increasing age and with decreasing risk of vascular disease. People aged 40-49 with 5 year risks of major vascular events of 42% and 12% at start of treatment gained 2.49 and 1.67 life years, respectively. Treatment with statins remained cost saving or cost less than ÂŁ2500 per life year gained in people as young as 35 years or as old as 85 with 5 year risks of a major vascular event as low as 5% at the start of treatment.
<i>Conclusions</i>: Treatment with statins is cost effective in a wider population than is routinely treated at present
Kinetics of the reduction of metalloproteins by chromous ion
The reduction of Cu(330) in Rhus vernicifera laccase by chromous ion is 30% faster than reduction of Cu(614) at room temperature [pH 4.8, µ = 0.1 (NaCl)], and two parallel first-order paths, attributed to heterogeneity of the protein, are observed at both wavelengths. The reactions of stellacyanin, spinach and French-bean plastocyanins, and cytochrome c with chromous ion under similar conditions are faster than that with laccase by factors of 102 to 104, and are first order in protein concentration. Comparison of rates and activation parameters for the reduction of "blue" copper in laccase, stellacyanin, and the two plastocyanins indicates that reduction of the Cu(614) site in laccase may occur by intramolecular electron transfer from one of the Cu(330) sites. Our value of ΔH (17.4 kcal/mol) for the chromous ion reduction of cytochrome c is consistent with a mechanism in which major conformational changes in the protein must accompany electron transfer

The Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey: I. Overview and Images
The first epoch Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS1) is a radio continuum
survey made using the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) at 843
MHz with a resolution of 43" X 43" cosec |delta|. The region surveyed is 245
deg < l < 355 deg, |b| < 1.5 deg. The thirteen 9 deg X 3 deg mosaic images
presented here are the superposition of over 450 complete synthesis
observations, each taking 12 h and covering 70' X 70' cosec |delta|. The
root-mean-square sensitivity over much of the mosaiced survey is 1-2 mJy/beam
(1 sigma), and the positional accuracy is approximately 1" X 1" cosec |delta|
for sources brighter than 20 mJy. The dynamic range is no better than 250:1,
and this also constrains the sensitivity in some parts of the images. The
survey area of 330 sq deg contains well over 12,000 unresolved or barely
resolved objects, almost all of which are extra-galactic sources lying in the
Zone of Avoidance. In addition a significant fraction of this area is covered
by extended, diffuse emission associated with thermal complexes, discrete H II
regions, supernova remnants, and other structures in the Galactic interstellar

A New Method for Finding Vacua in String Phenomenology
One of the central problems of string-phenomenology is to find stable vacua
in the four dimensional effective theories which result from compactification.
We present an algorithmic method to find all of the vacua of any given
string-phenomenological system in a huge class. In particular, this paper
reviews and then extends hep-th/0606122 to include various non-perturbative
effects. These include gaugino condensation and instantonic contributions to

Epitaxial growth of (111)-oriented LaAlO/LaNiO ultra-thin superlattices
The epitaxial stabilization of a single layer or superlattice structures
composed of complex oxide materials on polar (111) surfaces is severely
burdened by reconstructions at the interface, that commonly arise to neutralize
the polarity. We report on the synthesis of high quality LaNiO/mLaAlO
pseudo cubic (111) superlattices on polar (111)-oriented LaAlO, the
proposed complex oxide candidate for a topological insulating behavior.
Comprehensive X-Ray diffraction measurements, RHEED, and element specific
resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy affirm their high structural and
chemical quality. The study offers an opportunity to fabricate interesting
interface and topology controlled (111) oriented superlattices based on
ortho-nickelates
Conformally Einstein Products and Nearly K\"ahler Manifolds
In the first part of this note we study compact Riemannian manifolds (M,g)
whose Riemannian product with R is conformally Einstein. We then consider
compact 6--dimensional almost Hermitian manifolds of type W_1+W_4 in the
Gray--Hervella classification admitting a parallel vector field and show that
(under some regularity assumption) they are obtained as mapping tori of
isometries of compact Sasaki-Einstein 5-dimensional manifolds. In particular,
we obtain examples of inhomogeneous locally (non-globally) conformal nearly
K\"ahler compact manifolds
