In the present paper, we show that many combinatorial and topological objects, such as maps, hypermaps, three-dimensional pavings, constellations and branched coverings of the two--sphere admit any given finite automorphism group. This enhances the already known results by Frucht, Cori -- Mach\`i, \v{S}ir\'{a}\v{n} -- \v{S}koviera, and other authors. We also provide a more universal technique for showing that ``any finite automorphism group is possible'', that is applicable to wider classes or, in contrast, to more particular sub-classes of said combinatorial and geometric objects. Finally, we show that any given finite automorphism group can be realised by sufficiently many non-isomorphic such entities (super-exponentially many with respect to a certain combinatorial complexity measure).Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures; final version to appear in Algebraic Combinatorics https://alco.centre-mersenne.or

The Neuroelectromagnetic Inverse Problem and the Zero Dipole Localization Error

    Get PDF
A tomography of neural sources could be constructed from EEG/MEG recordings once the neuroelectromagnetic inverse problem (NIP) is solved. Unfortunately the NIP lacks a unique solution and therefore additional constraints are needed to achieve uniqueness. Researchers are then confronted with the dilemma of choosing one solution on the basis of the advantages publicized by their authors. This study aims to help researchers to better guide their choices by clarifying what is hidden behind inverse solutions oversold by their apparently optimal properties to localize single sources. Here, we introduce an inverse solution (ANA) attaining perfect localization of single sources to illustrate how spurious sources emerge and destroy the reconstruction of simultaneously active sources. Although ANA is probably the simplest and robust alternative for data generated by a single dominant source plus noise, the main contribution of this manuscript is to show that zero localization error of single sources is a trivial and largely uninformative property unable to predict the performance of an inverse solution in presence of simultaneously active sources. We recommend as the most logical strategy for solving the NIP the incorporation of sound additional a priori information about neural generators that supplements the information contained in the data

The article aims to reveal the functions of traditional radio in the 21st century, which, beyond informing and entertaining (as has been established for the functionalist current), allows collective reflection and articulates the social bond. Neither forgotten nor disappeared, due to its low production costs and high social penetration, has analogical radio facilitated access to the disconnected people from the Internet galaxy in times of remediation. The study is classified as descriptive with a theoretical and documentary nature. In this sense, the roles of the radio platform are identified and characterized in the generation of mechanisms for citizen participation, accompaniment at times of crisis, its incidence in problematizing education, the defense of culture and public service (social facilitation), in Therefore, it becomes a resource to communicate the cultural heritage of cities. The article also incorporates the analysis and synthesis of content from the Latin American critical perspective, which considers the collective construction of citizenship as the main social object of the radio.Facultad de Periodismo y Comunicación Socia

Recordings of brain electrophysiological activity provide the most direct reflect of neural function. Information contained in these signals varies as a function of the spatial scale at which recordings are done: from single cell recording to large scale macroscopic fields, e.g., scalp EEG. Microscopic and macroscopic measurements and models in Neuroscience are often in conflict. Solving this conflict might require the developments of a sort of bio-statistical physics, a framework for relating the microscopic properties of individual cells to the macroscopic or bulk properties of neural circuits. Such a framework can only emerge in Neuroscience from the systematic analysis and modeling of the diverse recording scales from simultaneous measurements. In this article we briefly review the different measurement scales and models in modern neuroscience to try to identify the sources of conflict that might ultimately help to create a unified theory of brain electromagnetic fields. We argue that seen the different recording scales, from the single cell to the large scale fields measured by the scalp electroencephalogram, as derived from a unique physical magnitude—the electric potential that is measured in all cases—might help to conciliate microscopic and macroscopic models of neural function as well as the animal and human neuroscience literatur

    Bayesian Models of Mentalizing

Surprisingly effortless is the human capacity known as "mentalizing”, i.e., the ability to explain and predict the behavior of others by attributing to them independent mental states, such as beliefs, desires, emotions or intentions. This capacity is, among other factors, dependent on the correct anticipation of the dynamics of facially expressed emotions based on our beliefs and experience. Important information about the neural processes involved in mentalizing can be derived from dynamic recordings of neural activity such as the EEG. We here exemplify how the so-called Bayesian probabilistic models can help us to model the neural dynamic involved in the perception of clips that evolve from neutral to emotionally laden faces. Contrasting with conventional models, in Bayesian models, probabilities can be used to dynamically update beliefs based on new incoming information. Our results show that a reproducible model of the neural dynamic involved in the appraisal of facial expression can be derived from the grand mean ERP over five subjects. One of the two models used to predict the individual subject dynamic yield correct estimates for four of the five subjects analyzed. These results encourage the future use of Bayesian formalism to build more detailed models able to describe the single trial dynami
