    Potential of a sunflower seed by-product as animal fat replacer in healthier Frankfurters

    Upcycled defatted sunflower seed flour (SUN), a by-product obtained from sunflower oil extraction, was used as an animal fat replacer to develop healthier frankfurters. For that end, animal fat was replaced (~50%) with water and 2% or 4% of SUN. Nutritional composition, technological, structural and sensorial properties were evaluated. SUN incorporation led to a significant increase in protein, minerals (magnesium, potassium, copper and manganese) and a decrease in fat content (~37% less than control with all animal fat). The incorporation of SUN in frankfurters promoted the presence of phenolic compounds. Increasing SUN addition lead to an increasingly (p < 0.05) darker frankfurter colour. Samples with SUN at 4% were firmer than the control according to TPA and sensory analysis results and showed the highest lipid disorder attributed to more lipid interactions in the meat matrix. SUN addition as an animal fat replacer in frankfurters is a feasible strategy to valorise sunflower oil by-products and obtain healthier frankfurters

    A Literature Review of Business/IT Alignment Strategies

    AbstractIn the last years, the alignment issue was addressed in several researches and numerous methods, techniques and tools were proposed. Indeed, the business and IT performance are tightly coupled, and enterprises cannot be competitive if their business and IT strategies are not aligned. This paper proposes a literature review useful for evaluating different alignment approaches, with the aim of discovering similarity, maturity, capability to measure, model, asses and evolve the alignment level existing among business and technological assets of an enterprise. The proposed framework is applied to analyse the alignment research published in the Information & Management journal and the Journal of Strategic Information Systems, that are the ones that more published on this topic. The achieved evaluation results are presented

    The dry stone wall of 'Paretone dei Greci': an anthracological approach

    International audienceDry stone constructions are a common occurrence in many Mediterranean landscapes. One of these structures known as "Paretone dei Greci" (Taranto, Southern Italy), was subject to an archaeological investigation. Soil and sediment material within this wall, as well as those above and below it, were sampled and processed for archaeobotanical studies. In this manner it was possible to understand its building technique as well as giving it a chronological context. Through an anthracological analysis it was possible to insert the "Paretone" within the surrounding agricultural landscape, thus better highlighting its function in relation to the history of the territor

    Autophagy in Cell Fate and Diseases

    Autophagy pathway has been one of the hot topics during the last decade. From a general notion about its cellular role, autophagy becomes a more sophisticated phenomenon with significant implications in cellular homeostasis. Consequently, autophagy represents an emerging new factor in human diseases. Despite its general task, the bulk degradation of cellular constituents during starvation settings, autophagy possesses important cross talk and interrelationships with several cellular processes such as apoptosis and senescence, among others. This entire panorama gives us a complex but exciting scenario. Consequently, with the aim of encompassing the whole spectrum, in this chapter, we review three main topics: autophagy as a cellular process; autophagy in cell fate; and autophagy in disease. We discuss the emerging role of selective type of autophagy to avoid apoptosis or necrosis and the novel relationship between autophagy and senescence to understand the real extent that autophagy pathway has over cell fate. Finally, we briefly describe the current trends on autophagy in human pancreatic diseases and its role in cancer cell metabolism

    Empirical Mode Decomposition of Pressure Signal for Health Condition Monitoring in Waterjet Cutting

    Waterjet/abrasive waterjet cutting is a flexible technology that can be exploited for different operations on a wide range of materials. Due to challenging pressure conditions, cyclic pressure loadings, and aggressiveness of abrasives, most of the components of the ultra-high pressure (UHP) pump and the cutting head are subject to wear and faults that are difficult to predict. Therefore, the continuous monitoring of machine health conditions is of great industrial interest, as it allows implementing condition-based maintenance strategies, and providing an automatic reaction to critical faults, as far as unattended processes are concerned. Most of the literature in this frame is focused on indirect workpiece quality monitoring and on fault detection for critical cutting head components (e.g., orifices and mixing tubes). A very limited attention has been devoted to the condition monitoring of critical UHP pump components, including cylinders and valves. The paper investigates the suitability of the water pressure signal as a source of information to detect different kinds of fault that may affect both the cutting head and the UHP pump components. We propose a condition monitoring approach that couples empirical mode decomposition (EMD) with principal component analysis to detect any pattern deviation with respect to a reference model, based on training data. The EMD technique is used to separate high-frequency transient patterns from low-frequency pressure ripples, and the computation of combined mode functions is applied to cope with the mode mixing effect. Real industrial data, acquired under normal working conditions and in the presence of actual faults, are used to demonstrate the performances provided by the proposed approach

The diversity of family models and of migration experiences does not always guarantee the necessary conditions of containment and support in the growth process. Factors such as insecurity, loneliness, the trauma of migration can adversely affect the life paths. Politics and society must take charge of equalization of future Italian citizens and school acts as a driver of inclusion and support to students but also to their families, through opportunities for active participation

    Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a devastating disease with an extremely poor life expectancy and no effective treatment. Autophagy is a process of degradation of cytoplasmic component capable of recycling cellular components or eliminate specific targets. The presence of autophagy in PDAC has been demonstrated. However, the implicated cellular pathways are not fully understood and, more importantly, the role of autophagy in PDAC is matter of intensive debate. This review summarizes recently published data in an attempt to clarify the importance of autophagy in this disease and try to reconcile apparently contradictory results

    Choice of three different intramedullary nails in the treatment of trochanteric fractures: outcome, analysis and consideration in midterm

    paragone di 3 differenti impianti per frattura pertrocanterica femoreThe purpose of this study is to compare the results obtained using three different systems of osteosynthesis, developed for the surgical treatment of fractures of the trochanteric region of the femur, based on the principle intramedullary nailing: the Gamma nail, the Affixus nail and the ZNN nail. This is a retrospective study: 72 trochanteric fractures treated with the Gamma nail, 68 treated with the Affixus nail and 69 treated with the ZNN nail, between the years 2012 and 2014, with the prerequisite of a minimum follow-up of 18 months. The fractures were classified according to the AO system; the most commonly reported subtype was the A2 fracture. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed, both at hospital admission and post-operatively, at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months. Of the 209 patients, 171 were women and 38 were men. The average age was 83.12 years old. All three systems guaranteed an early mobilization and ambulation in most of the patients. There were no significant differences in the use of the three nails in terms of recovery of previous functional capacity, or in terms of the time required for the fracture to heal. There were no advantages encountered with the use of one intramedullary nail over another and, in particular, when observing the complications and patient outcome, there were no statistically significant differences detected
