Role of antiplatelet therapy in cardiovascular disease II: Ischemic stroke.
The etiology of cerebrovascular disease is heterogeneous, with the majority of strokes being of ischemic origin. Transient ischemic attack is now considered to be an important precursor and long-term risk factor for ischemic stroke. Given the lack of acute therapies for ischemic stroke, current treatments focus on secondary prevention through risk-factor management, pharmacotherapy and interventional approaches. As illustrated in this paper, antiplatelet agents (e.g. clopidogrel, aspirin, dipyridamole) are the cornerstone of therapy for prevention of recurrent ischemic stroke

Synthesis and Structure of Solution-Stable One-Dimensional Palladium Wires
One-dimensional metal wires are valuable materials because of their optical and electronic anisotropy, and they have potential utility in devices such as photovoltaic cells and molecular sensors. However, despite more than a century of research, only a few examples exist of well-defined one-dimensional (1D) metal wires that allow for the rational variation of conductivity. Herein we describe the first examples of 1D molecular wires supported by Pd–Pd bonds, the thin-film conductive properties of which can be altered by controlled molecular changes. Wires based on Pd(III) give semiconducting films with a modifiable bandgap, whereas wires based on Pd(2.5) give films that display metallic conductivity above 200 K: a metallic state has not been reported previously for any polymer composed of 1D metal wires. The wires are infinite in the solid state and maintain 1D structures in solution with lengths of up to 750 nm. Bridging the GUI gap with reactive values and relations
There are at present two ways to write GUIs for functional code. One is to use standard GUI toolkits, with all the benefits they bring in terms of feature completeness, choice of platform, conformance to platform-specific look-and-feel, long-term viability, etc. However, such GUI APIs mandate an imperative programming style for the GUI and related parts of the application. Alternatively, we can use a functional GUI toolkit. The GUI can then be written in a functional style, but at the cost of foregoing many advantages of standard toolkits that often will be of critical importance. This paper introduces a light-weight framework structured around the notions of reactive values and reactive relations . It allows standard toolkits to be used from functional code written in a functional style. We thus bridge the gap between the two worlds, bringing the advantages of both to the developer. Our framework is available on Hackage and has been been validated through the development of non-trivial applications in a commercial context, and with different standard GUI toolkits
Exploring the future of tourism and quality of life
Few studies to date have examined the impact of tourism on quality of life (QoL) as conventional research has tended to focus, instead, on resident attitudes towards tourism and tourism ’s impacts in particular (Smith, 1977; 1989). Even
less research has addressed whether tourism can drive or facilitate sustainable development (Miller and Twining-Ward, 2005) or whether tourism can contribute to the subjective wellbeing of those involved in travel and tourism. Impact studies generally ask residents to agree or disagree with statements regarding perceived impacts from tourism on their community. By contrast, QoL research aims to understand how
these impacts are internalised and influence an
individual’s overall life satisfaction (Andereck et al, 2007). With terms used interchangeably QoL, happiness and well-being refer to one’s satisfaction with life, and feelings of contentment or fulfilment with one’s experiences in the world (ibid.). The Case of AB Aurigae's Disk in Polarized Light: Is There Truly a Gap?
Using the NICMOS coronagraph, we have obtained high-contrast 2.0 micron
imaging polarimetry and 1.1 micron imaging of the circumstellar disk around AB
Aurigae on angular scales of 0.3-3 arcsec (40-550 AU). Unlike previous
observations, these data resolve the disk in both total and polarized
intensity, allowing accurate measurement of the spatial variation of
polarization fraction across the disk. Using these observations we investigate
the apparent "gap" in the disk reported by Oppenheimer et al. 2008. In
polarized intensity, the NICMOS data closely reproduces the morphology seen by
Oppenheimer et al., yet in total intensity we find no evidence for a gap in
either our 1.1 or 2.0 micron images. We find instead that region has lower
polarization fraction, without a significant decrease in total scattered light,
consistent with expectations for back-scattered light on the far side of an
inclined disk. Radiative transfer models demonstrate this explanation fits the
observations. Geometrical scattering effects are entirely sufficient to explain
the observed morphology without any need to invoke a gap or protoplanet at that

Remotely-Sensing Chemical Diversity and Function of Native Plants Across Sagebrush-Steppe Landscapes
Plant chemical diversity provides ecosystem services by supporting wildlife diversity and offering sources for novel medicines. Current mapping of phytochemicals can be expensive, time-intensive and provides only a snapshot of available diversity. To overcome this, I will use handheld and airborne instruments collecting near infrared spectra and hyperspectral imagery to remotely sense chemical diversity within plants and ecosystems. I hypothesize that greater plant chemical diversity will be correlated with greater habitat use by wildlife and greater bioactivity of plant extracts. This research provides a powerful tool to map chemical diversity, target wildlife conservation and direct the discovery of novel medicines
Baker Center Journal of Applied Public Policy, Vol. I No. I
Welcome to the first issue of the Baker Center Journal of Applied Public Policy. Throughout my many years of service, I always have been impressed with the tremendous good that can be accomplished through the creation and implementation of sound public policy. I hope that, along the way, I have contributed to the body of policies that help our nation function in a strong, effective, compassionate, and prosperous fashion. As we launch this new Journal, under the auspices of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennnnessee, I wanted to briefly expand on some of the reasons I believe that this journal is necessary and why I believe that research on public policy is so vitally important.
This Journal aims to discuss applied public policy. The goal is not to engage in theoretical discussions, though I believe those are important. Instead, we hope that the Baker Journal will focus on the most current issues that directly affect our nation and our world on the operational, or mechanical level. We intend to engage a wide variety of contributors. Scholars, of course, will be asked to write on critical topics of research. We also aim to include contributions from those who draft, approve and execute public policy at the local, state, and national levels. Additionally, at least one article in each issue will be reserved for the work of a university-level student. Our approach is varied, and I know that the result will be an intellectually sound and extraordinarily interesting presentation of experiences and ideas.I am especially pleased that so many University of Tennnnessee students are involved in the formulation and operation of the Journal. Our editorial board is comprised of some of the University of Tennnnessee’s most promising undergraduate, graduate, and law school students. With dedicated assistance and oversight from faculty and from the Baker Center, this board of extraordinarily intelligent and committed students has worked very hard to make this Journal a reality. The Center has also formed a national advisory panel for the Journal. I am a member of that panel, and I must note that I am grateful for the involvement and support of my colleagues who have agreed to serve with me: Ms. Emily Reynolds, former Secretary of the United States Senate; Congressman Bob Clement, former Tennnnessee Congressman; Mr. Glennnn Reynolds, noted author and professor of law at the University of Tennnnessee; Dr. Joseph Cooper, an accomplished professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University; and Mr. John Seigenthaler, distinguished journalist and founder and director of the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University.
I believe it is critical that we think deeply about the issues that are confronting us today. Our representative system of governance is based on an informed citizenry and informed public servants. From international issues such as the war on terror and energy challenges to more local but equally important topics such as sustainable development and education, we must commit ourselves to understanding all challenges free of partisan rhetoric. Only then can we confront them together.
It is my hope that this Journal will add to that understanding and will speak to many audiences. From the classroom to the boardroom, from city hall to the halls of our legislatures, I believe the work put forward in our journal will be useful for everyone who wants to be informed and engaged. It is an exciting undertaking, and I thank you for your support
HerMES: The Contribution to the Cosmic Infrared Background from Galaxies Selected by Mass and Redshift
We quantify the fraction of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) that originates from galaxies identified in the UV/optical/near-infrared by stacking 81,250 (~35.7 arcmin^(–2)) K-selected sources (K_(AB) 350 μm. The contribution from galaxies in the log(M/M_☉) = 9.0-9.5 (lowest) and log(M/M_☉) = 11.0-12.0 (highest) stellar-mass bins contribute the least—both of order 5%—although the highest stellar-mass bin is a significant contributor to the luminosity density at z ≳ 2. The luminosities of the galaxies responsible for the CIB shifts from combinations of "normal" and luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) at λ ≾ 160 μm, to LIRGs at 160 ≾ λ ≾ 500 μm, to finally LIRGs and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies at λ ≳ 500 μm. Stacking analyses were performed using SIMSTACK, a novel algorithm designed to account for possible biases in the stacked flux density due to clustering. Consumer\u27s Guide to Regulatory Impact Analysis: Ten Tips for Being an Informed Policymaker
Regulatory impact analyses (RIAs) weigh the benefits of regulations against the burdens they impose and are invaluable tools for informing decision makers.We offer 10 tips for nonspecialist policymakers and interested stakeholders who will be reading RIAs as consumers. Core problem: Determine whether the RIA identifies the core problem (compelling public need) the regulation is intended to address. Alternatives: Look for an objective, policy-neutral evaluation of the relative merits of reasonable alternatives. Baseline: Check whether the RIA presents a reasonable “counterfactual” against which benefits and costs are measured. Increments: Evaluate whether totals and averages obscure relevant distinctions and trade-offs. Uncertainty: Recognize that all estimates involve uncertainty, and ask what effect key assumptions, data, and models have on those estimates. Transparency: Look for transparency and objectivity of analytical inputs. Benefits: Examine how projected benefits relate to stated objectives. Costs: Understand what costs are included.
