    Cognitive and Affective Aspects of Personality and Academic Procrastination: The Role of Personal Agency, Flow, and Executive Function

    Academic procrastination is a prevalent issue that affects school-related and other experiences of many students, with some studies identifying as many as a third of college students sampled as‘severe’ procrastinators. This study investigated some of the factors previous studies have identified as potential contributors to procrastinating in the academic arena. In defining procrastination as a self-regulation issue, it is proposed that distinct executive function processes play a role in one’s efforts at academic task engagement and completion and resisting the tendency to procrastinate on these tasks. It is also proposed that the frequency with which one experiences ‘flow’, a state of total concentration and absorption, when working on academic tasks (e.g. writing a paper, studying for exams) would act as a motivator and enabler of staying on-task, and therefore be negatively related to the tendency to procrastinate on academic tasks. It is further proposed that one’s belief in their general self-efficacy, a measure thought to reflect one’s sense of personal agency, will predict the frequency with which one experiences negative or positive affect and thereby proneness to entering flow states. Lastly, it is proposed that the frequency with which one experiences flow in learning will interact with the relationship of EF processes to academic procrastination, shielding one’s efforts at task completion from the influence of EF deficits. This study investigated the role of gender as a possible moderator of the relationships mentioned above. One of the EF measures of inhibitory control was found to predict higher rates of procrastination on a subjective report of academic procrastination (self-report of the extent of one’s procrastination behaviors) for those identified as low in their frequency of flow-experience on academic tasks, although this relationship was not observed for two other measures of inhibitory control. This same EF measure predicted higher rates of procrastination as measured by the discrepancy between participants’ report of their intended and actual time spent on specifically stated academic tasks. Flow-frequency and positive affect predicted higher -- and negative affect lower -- levels of procrastination on the subjective measure, but lost their predictive power when a measure of self-regulatory self-efficacy was included as a predictor. General self-efficacy predicted higher levels of procrastination on the measures mentioned above (though for one this relationship only approached statistical significance), as well as on a measure of the discrepancy between a report of the intended and actual amount of specifically stated academic tasks participants reported doing, a relationship that was contrary to expectations. Self-regulatory self-efficacy (predicting lower levels of procrastination) emerged as the predictor having the strongest effect on academic procrastination; it and general self-efficacy were the most reliable predictors in terms of the number of procrastination measures they were found to predict. The suggestion of the link between general self-efficacy, affect, and flow-frequency was confirmed with regard to positive but not negative affect. Gender differences were observed for the relationship of the EF measure of inhibitory control mentioned above and negative affect with procrastination measured by the discrepancy between participants’ report of their intended and actual time spent on specifically stated academic tasks: these relationships were found to be significantly stronger for males than for females

    The High Pressure Dependence of X-Ray Induced Decomposition of Cadmium Oxalate

    The high proclivity of x rays to destabilize and distort molecular structures has been previously utilized in the synthesis of novel compounds. Here, we show that x-ray induced decomposition of cadmium oxalate induces chemical and structural transformations only at 0.5 and 1 GPa. Using x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, the synthesized product is identified as cadmium carbonate with cadmium oxalate remnants, which is stable under ambient conditions. At ambient and \u3e1 GPa pressures, only degradation of the electronic density distribution is observed. The transformation kinetics are examined in terms of Avrami’s model, which demonstrates that despite the necessity of high pressure for efficient x-ray induced synthesis of cadmium carbonate, the rate and geometry of structural synthesis in the 0.5–1 GPa pressure range do not depend on the applied pressure. In addition, the possible role of intermolecular distance and molecular mobility in transformation yield is also discussed. Our experimental results indicate that x-ray induced photochemical synthetic pathways can be modulated and optimized by specific parameter selection such as high pressure

    Impact of socioeconomic status on cancer incidence and stage at diagnosis: selected findings from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results: National Longitudinal Mortality Study

    BACKGROUND: Population-based cancer registry data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) are mainly based on medical records and administrative information. Individual-level socioeconomic data are not routinely reported by cancer registries in the United States because they are not available in patient hospital records. The U.S. representative National Longitudinal Mortality Study (NLMS) data provide self-reported, detailed demographic and socioeconomic data from the Social and Economic Supplement to the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey (CPS). In 1999, the NCI initiated the SEER-NLMS study, linking the population-based SEER cancer registry data to NLMS data. The SEER-NLMS data provide a new unique research resource that is valuable for health disparity research on cancer burden. We describe the design, methods, and limitations of this data set. We also present findings on cancer-related health disparities according to individual-level socioeconomic status (SES) and demographic characteristics for all cancers combined and for cancers of the lung, breast, prostate, cervix, and melanoma. METHODS: Records of cancer patients diagnosed in 1973–2001 when residing 1 of 11 SEER registries were linked with 26 NLMS cohorts. The total number of SEER matched cancer patients that were also members of an NLMS cohort was 26,844. Of these 26,844 matched patients, 11,464 were included in the incidence analyses and 15,357 in the late-stage diagnosis analyses. Matched patients (used in the incidence analyses) and unmatched patients were compared by age group, sex, race, ethnicity, residence area, year of diagnosis, and cancer anatomic site. Cohort-based age-adjusted cancer incidence rates were computed. The impact of socioeconomic status on cancer incidence and stage of diagnosis was evaluated. RESULTS: Men and women with less than a high school education had elevated lung cancer rate ratios of 3.01 and 2.02, respectively, relative to their college educated counterparts. Those with family annual incomes less than 12,500hadincidenceratesthatweremorethan1.7timesthelungcancerincidencerateofthosewithincomes12,500 had incidence rates that were more than 1.7 times the lung cancer incidence rate of those with incomes 50,000 or higher. Lower income was also associated with a statistically significantly increased risk of distant-stage breast cancer among women and distant-stage prostate cancer among men. CONCLUSIONS: Socioeconomic patterns in incidence varied for specific cancers, while such patterns for stage were generally consistent across cancers, with late-stage diagnoses being associated with lower SES. These findings illustrate the potential for analyzing disparities in cancer outcomes according to a variety of individual-level socioeconomic, demographic, and health care characteristics, as well as by area measures available in the linked database

    Serum neurofilament dynamics predicts neurodegeneration and clinical progression in presymptomatic Alzheimer's disease

    Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a promising fluid biomarker of disease progression for various cerebral proteopathies. Here we leverage the unique characteristics of the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network and ultrasensitive immunoassay technology to demonstrate that NfL levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (n = 187) and serum (n = 405) are correlated with one another and are elevated at the presymptomatic stages of familial Alzheimer's disease. Longitudinal, within-person analysis of serum NfL dynamics (n = 196) confirmed this elevation and further revealed that the rate of change of serum NfL could discriminate mutation carriers from non-mutation carriers almost a decade earlier than cross-sectional absolute NfL levels (that is, 16.2 versus 6.8 years before the estimated symptom onset). Serum NfL rate of change peaked in participants converting from the presymptomatic to the symptomatic stage and was associated with cortical thinning assessed by magnetic resonance imaging, but less so with amyloid-β deposition or glucose metabolism (assessed by positron emission tomography). Serum NfL was predictive for both the rate of cortical thinning and cognitive changes assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination and Logical Memory test. Thus, NfL dynamics in serum predict disease progression and brain neurodegeneration at the early presymptomatic stages of familial Alzheimer's disease, which supports its potential utility as a clinically useful biomarker

    Amino acids are essential components of all living cells serving as building blocks of proteins, as energy source, and as precursors of metabolites and signaling molecules. Amino acid transporters are membrane proteins that mediate the transfer of amino acids across the plasma membrane, and between compartments in cells, different cells and organs. The absence, overexpression or malfunction of specific amino acid transporters have been associated with human disease. One of the projects within the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) TransCure was directed at SLC7 family amino acid transporters, with a particular focus on the heteromeric amino acid transporters 4F2hc-LAT1 (SLC3A2-SLC7A5) and 4F2hc-LAT2 (SLC3A2-SLC7A8), and the bacterial homologue AdiC. The project addressed questions of basic research (function and structure), pharmacology (identification of potent inhibitors and activators), and pre-clinical medicine (e.g., physiological role in the placenta) and disease models (e.g., tumor progression) of specific SLC7 family amino acid transporters. This review presents, summarizes and discusses selected main results obtained in this NCCR TransCure project

    Rare mutations in SQSTM1 modify susceptibility to frontotemporal lobar degeneration

    Mutations in the gene coding for Sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1) have been genetically associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Paget disease of bone. In the present study, we analyzed the SQSTM1 coding sequence for mutations in an extended cohort of 1,808 patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), ascertained within the European Early-Onset Dementia consortium. As control dataset, we sequenced 1,625 European control individuals and analyzed whole-exome sequence data of 2,274 German individuals (total n = 3,899). Association of rare SQSTM1 mutations was calculated in a meta-analysis of 4,332 FTLD and 10,240 control alleles. We identified 25 coding variants in FTLD patients of which 10 have not been described. Fifteen mutations were absent in the control individuals (carrier frequency < 0.00026) whilst the others were rare in both patients and control individuals. When pooling all variants with a minor allele frequency < 0.01, an overall frequency of 3.2 % was calculated in patients. Rare variant association analysis between patients and controls showed no difference over the whole protein, but suggested that rare mutations clustering in the UBA domain of SQSTM1 may influence disease susceptibility by doubling the risk for FTLD (RR = 2.18 [95 % CI 1.24-3.85]; corrected p value = 0.042). Detailed histopathology demonstrated that mutations in SQSTM1 associate with widespread neuronal and glial phospho-TDP-43 pathology. With this study, we provide further evidence for a putative role of rare mutations in SQSTM1 in the genetic etiology of FTLD and showed that, comparable to other FTLD/ALS genes, SQSTM1 mutations are associated with TDP-43 pathology
