Background: This study aims to demonstrate the practical application of an innovative easy-to-use equipment to dosage cooking salt, and evaluate the effectiveness in reducing 30% of the added salt in meals and the impact on consumers satisfaction and food waste. Methods: Two canteens from one public university where randomized in one control arm and one intervention arm. The first step was to evaluate the salt added to food through atomic emission spectrophotometry in both canteens, and the second step was to perform gradual reductions of up to 30% of cooking salt in the intervention canteen using the Salt Control-C (SC-C) equipment. Consumer acceptability was assessed through satisfaction questionnaires and food waste was evaluated by weighing. Results: The intervention canteen achieved to a reduction of more than 30% of added salt in soup (34.3% per 100 g), fish dish (41.1% per 100 g) and meat dish (48.0% per 100 g), except for the vegetarian dish (6.1% per 100 g). There was no decrease in consumer satisfaction, with a significant satisfaction increase of 15.7% (p = 0.044) regarding the flavor of the main dish. Also, no significant differences were found in food waste. Conclusions: SC-C seems to be effective in reducing 30% of added salt levels in canteen meals, and may be a good strategy to control and reach adequate levels of added salt in meals served outside-the-home, promoting benefits to the individuals health. Computing domains of attraction for planar dynamics

In this note we investigate the problem of computing the domain of attraction of a ow on R2 for a given attractor. We consider an operator that takes two inputs, the description of the ow and a cover of the attractors, and outputs the domain of attraction for the given attractor. We show that: (i) if we consider only (structurally) stable systems, the operator is (strictly semi-)computable; (ii) if we allow all systems de ned by C1-functions, the operator is not (semi-)computable. We also address the problem of computing limit cycles on these systems

PTSD, psychological morbidity and marital dissatisfaction in colonial war veterans

Background: Forty years after Colonial War, veterans still show psychological disturbances affecting their marital and sexual satisfaction.Aims: This study analyzed the relationships between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), number of PTSD symptoms and symptom clusters, psychological morbidity, marital dissatisfaction and sexual dissatisfaction; the variables that contributed to marital dissatisfaction and the mediator role of marital dissatisfaction and sexual dissatisfaction, in a sample of colonial War Veterans.Method: The sample included 138 Portuguese war veterans who answered Index of Marital Satisfaction; Index of Sexual Satisfaction; Beck Depression Inventory; State Trait Anxiety Inventory; Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Scale. Results: PTSD, number of PTSD symptoms and symptom clusters were associated with psychological morbidity, marital and sexual dissatisfaction. Age, depression symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction contributed to marital dissatisfaction and the model explained 55% of the variance. Marital dissatisfaction mediated the relationship between depression symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction, as well as between number of PTSD symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction. Conclusions: Health professionals need to take into consideration the veteran's marital and sexual relationship in clinical routine consultations. As such, treating the veteran in the couple' context seems warranted.Bayer Portuguesa (B02/06

Waterborne Toxoplasmosis, Brazil, from Field to Gene

Water was the suspected vehicle of Toxoplasma gondii dissemination in a toxoplasmosis outbreak in Brazil. A case-control study and geographic mapping of cases were performed. T. gondii was isolated directly from the implicated water and genotyped as SAG 2 type I

Effects of Planck-scale-modified dispersion relations on the thermodynamics of charged black holes

International audienceConsidering corrections produced by modified dispersion relations on the equation of state parameter of radiation, we study the induced black hole metric inspired by Kiselev’s ansatz, thus defining a deformed Reissner-Nordström metric. In particular, we consider thermodynamic properties of such a black hole from the combined viewpoints of the modified equation of state parameter and the phenomenological approach to the quantum gravity problem called rainbow gravity

Photophysical properties of unsymmetric meso-substituted porphyrins synthesized via the Suzuki coupling reaction

    No full text
A new family of porphyrins containing different groups in meso positions was synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction of meso mono- and dibromo-diarylporphyrins with several boronate esters, catalyzed by palladium organometallic complexes. These procedures gave high yields of unsymmetric porphyrins bearing carboxylate anchoring groups, with enhanced absorptions in the red and showing no tendency for aggregation in toluene or THF solutions. Such properties are of interest for application in dye-sensitized solar cells. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
