The purpose of the study was to explore elementary-aged children\u27s conceptions of death through the use of stories and to examine the use of story as a medium in the expression of children\u27s conceptions of death. The subjects were 31 elementary-aged children (12 kindergarteners. 9 second graders, and 10 fourth graders). Each group was randomly divided into Group I and Group II. Group I (contextual stories) listened to three stories that reflected real life experiences with death; stories were adapted from children\u27s literature. Group II (media stories), on the other hand, listened to three stories that presented an actual death experience based upon newspaper accounts. Both groups were presented with a sequence of three stories within a one-week period. The sequence of stories introduced the idea of death, proceeding from a remote indirect experience in the first story and progressing to a more personal, intimate, and direct experience in the later two stories. Group discussions followed each of the story sessions in order to assess children’s conceptions. Questions were designed to facilitate open discussion. Data obtained were descriptive in nature, and children\u27s responses were classified using Kane’s (1979) components of death. The major findings of this study were: 1. Using Kane\u27s components of death, variable patterns were found in kindergarten, second, and fourth grade, as the sequence of three stories unfolded in both groups. 2. Storie* designed in a contextual or media format were feasible tools Co evoke elementary-aged children\u27s conceptions of death. 3. A storyteller or a discussion leader (e.g., teacher or counselor) presenting different contextual and media stories in a school setting promoted an atmosphere of acceptance of the death experience. 4. Children in the study did not personify death. This is in contrast to Nagy\u27s (1948) study, who found that children between the ages of five to nine personified death

Magneto-caloric effect in the pseudo-binary intermetallic YPrFe17 compound

    Get PDF
We have synthesized the intermetallic YPrFe17 compound by arc-melting. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction show that the crystal structure is rhombohedral with View the MathML source space group (Th2Zn17-type). The investigated compound exhibits a broad isothermal magnetic entropy change {\Delta}SM(T) associated with the ferro-to-paramagnetic phase transition (TC \approx 290 K). The |{\Delta}SM| (\approx 2.3 J kg-1 K-1) and the relative cooling power (\approx 100 J kg-1) have been calculated for applied magnetic field changes up to 1.5 T. A single master curve for {\Delta}SM under different values of the magnetic field change can be obtained by a rescaling of the temperature axis. The results are compared and discussed in terms of the magneto-caloric effect in the isostructural R2Fe17 (R = Y, Pr and Nd) binary intermetallic alloys.Comment: Preprint, 5 pages (postprint), 4 figures, regular pape

Eguneroko bizitzaren zenbait arlotan Matematikak aplika daitezke, eta nola ez, kirol-munduan ere bai. Nabaria denez, kirola ariketa fisikoan oinarrituta dago eta beronen prozesua teorikoki azter daiteke. Kirol bakoitzaren bilakaeran parte hartzen duten baldintzak kontuan hartuz, eredu matematiko baten barruan sar daitezke. Ondorioz, kirolariaren teknika hobetuz, bere indarretik etekin handiagoa aterako du. Gezurra badirudi ere, etekin altuko zentro batzuetan mota honetako ikerketak aplikatzen ari dira kirolariekin. M. Stewart Townend-ek "Mathematics in sport" liburuan kirol ugariri buruz egindako azterketa matematikoak argitaratu zituen oso era ulergarrian. This study is based on the usefulness of new technologies in the educational field. There are two different parts: First, it gives a more theoretical component of the integration of new technologies in the second language classroom. This includes its advantages, as well as its disadvantages. Additionally, there is the WebQuest, which helps students carry out tasks related to their daily lives in a motivating and stimulating way. Secondly, it shows a WebQuest proposal named “Flying around the world.” This proposal evaluated the performance of students completing a task while increasing their digital competence, difficulties, attitudes, and motivations during their learning process.Grado en Magisterio en Educación Primari

Performance measures of nonstationary inventory models for perishable products under the EWA policy

Accurately estimating key performance indicators in inventory models for perishable items is essential in order to assess and improve the management strategy of these systems. We analyse the production of platelet concentrates at blood banks under the EWA replenishment policy. We give analytical approximations of the most important performance measures, such as the size of orders, the size of stocks, the percentage of outdating, the age distribution of stocks and the freshness of units issued, among others. The production of platelet concentrates is a prototypical example of inventory models for short life items with random demand and a weekly pattern, where a high service level is required. The methodology and the approximations presented here can be easily adapted to other inventory systems with similar characteristics. Most of the formulae in this article are new for nonstationary models under the EWA policy; indeed, formulae for the age distribution of units in stock and of units issued have not appeared in the literature even for the simpler base-stock replenishment policy. We apply our results to a real blood bank and find very close agreement between the formulae and the results of Monte Carlo simulations. The accuracy of our approximations is also tested in several scenarios, depending on the lifetime of units, safety stock levels and the probabilistic distribution of demand.Carlos Gorria and Mikel Lezaun have received funding from the Department of Education of the Basque Government through the Consolidated Research Group MATHMODE (IT1294-19) and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Inovation Ref.
