Local structure study of the orbital order/disorder transition in LaMnO3
We use a combination of neutron and X-ray total scattering measurements
together with pair distribution function (PDF) analysis to characterise the
variation in local structure across the orbital order--disorder transition in
LaMnO. Our experimental data are inconsistent with a conventional
order--disorder description of the transition, and reflect instead the
existence of a discontinuous change in local structure between ordered and
disordered states. Within the orbital-ordered regime, the neutron and X-ray
PDFs are best described by a local structure model with the same local orbital
arrangements as those observed in the average (long-range) crystal structure.
We show that a variety of meaningfully-different local orbital arrangement
models can give fits of comparable quality to the experimental PDFs collected
within the disordered regime; nevertheless, our data show a subtle but
consistent preference for the anisotropic Potts model proposed in \emph{Phys
Rev.\ B} {\bf 79}, 174106 (2009). The key implications of this model are
electronic and magnetic isotropy together with the loss of local inversion
symmetry at the Mn site. We conclude with a critical assessment of the
interpretation of PDF measurements when characterising local symmetry breaking

Transkingdom Networks: A Systems Biology Approach to Identify Causal Members of Host-Microbiota Interactions
Improvements in sequencing technologies and reduced experimental costs have
resulted in a vast number of studies generating high-throughput data. Although
the number of methods to analyze these "omics" data has also increased,
computational complexity and lack of documentation hinder researchers from
analyzing their high-throughput data to its true potential. In this chapter we
detail our data-driven, transkingdom network (TransNet) analysis protocol to
integrate and interrogate multi-omics data. This systems biology approach has
allowed us to successfully identify important causal relationships between
different taxonomic kingdoms (e.g. mammals and microbes) using diverse types of
data

Hyperthyroidism and human chorionic gonadotrophin production in gestational trophoblastic disease
Background: Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a rare complication of pregnancy, ranging from molar pregnancy to choriocarcinoma. Patients with persistent disease require treatment with chemotherapy. For the vast majority, prognosis is excellent. Occasionally, GTD is complicated by hyperthyroidism, which may require treatment. This is thought to occur due to molecular mimicry between human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and hence cross-reactivity with the TSH receptor. Hyperthyroidism usually resolves as the GTD is successfully treated and correspondingly HCG levels normalise.
Methods: This paper reviews cases of GTD treated over a 5-year period at one of the three UK centres and identifies the prevalence of hyperthyroidism in this population. Four cases with clinical hyperthyroidism are discussed.
Results: On review of the 196 patients with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia treated with chemotherapy in Sheffield since 2005, 14 (7%) had biochemical hyperthyroidism. Of these, four had evidence of clinical hyperthyroidism.
Conclusion: Concomitant biochemical thyroid disease in patients with GTD is relatively common, and measurement of thyroid function in patients with persistent GTD is, therefore, important. The development of hyperthyroidism is largely influenced by the level of HCG and disease burden, and usually settles with treatment of the persistent GTD. However, rarely the thyroid stimulation can have potentially life-threatening consequences
Large sub-clonal variation in <i>Phytophthora infestans</i> from recent severe late blight epidemics in India
Abstract The population structure of the Phytophthora infestans populations that caused the recent 2013–14 late blight epidemic in eastern India (EI) and northeastern India (NEI) was examined. The data provide new baseline information for populations of P. infestans in India. A migrant European 13_A2 genotype was responsible for the 2013–14 epidemic, replacing the existing populations. Mutations have generated substantial sub-clonal variation with 24 multi-locus genotypes (MLGs) found, of which 19 were unique variants not yet reported elsewhere globally. Samples from West Bengal were the most diverse and grouped alongside MLGs found in Europe, the UK and from neighbouring Bangladesh but were not linked directly to most samples from south India. The pathogen population was broadly more aggressive on potato than on tomato and resistant to the fungicide metalaxyl. Pathogen population diversity was higher in regions around the international borders with Bangladesh and Nepal. Overall, the multiple shared MLGs suggested genetic contributions from UK and Europe in addition to a sub-structure based on the geographical location within India. Our data indicate the need for improved phytosanitary procedures and continuous surveillance to prevent the further introduction of aggressive lineages of P. infestans into the country
Housebound patients' experiences of a falls service provided by a team of community physiotherapists
Background/ aims: To explore the experiences of patients of a falls service provided by a community physiotherapy team to elderly, housebound people who have fallen.
Methods: Six housebound, elderly patients who had been referred to the service were interviewed in their own homes. The interviews were transcribed and a thematic analysis framework was used to analyse the data. Codes were identified and developed into key themes which addressed the overall research question.
Results: The analysis revealed that the participants presented with multiple risk factors including recurrent falls and comorbidities and were at high risk of falls. Exercise was
understood to increase their mobility and the majority expressed a fear of falling. They appeared to have a limited understanding of the referral process, the cause of their
falls and the interventions that may reduce their risk of falling.
Conclusions: A multidisciplinary falls team, established and recognised as a central point of referral for the care of people who have fallen could enhance the care of elderly, housebound people who have fallen. The team with their specialist knowledge and understanding of the multifactorial nature of falls and appropriate interventions could co-ordinate and monitor the assessments and interventions needed with the
relevant professionals and services
Validity and reliability of a modified english version of the physical activity questionnaire for adolescents
BACKGROUND: Adaptation of physical activity self-report questionnaires is sometimes required to reflect the activity behaviours of diverse populations. The processes used to modify self-report questionnaires though are typically underreported. This two-phased study used a formative approach to investigate the validity and reliability of the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A) in English youth. Phase one examined test content and response process validity and subsequently informed a modified version of the PAQ-A. Phase two assessed the validity and reliability of the modified PAQ-A. METHODS: In phase one, focus groups (n = 5) were conducted with adolescents (n = 20) to investigate test content and response processes of the original PAQ-A. Based on evidence gathered in phase one, a modified version of the questionnaire was administered to participants (n = 169, 14.5 ± 1.7 years) in phase two. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and intra-class correlations, respectively. Spearman correlations were used to assess associations between modified PAQ-A scores and accelerometer-derived physical activity, self-reported fitness and physical activity self-efficacy. RESULTS: Phase one revealed that the original PAQ-A was unrepresentative for English youth and that item comprehension varied. Contextual and population/cultural-specific modifications were made to the PAQ-A for use in the subsequent phase. In phase two, modified PAQ-A scores had acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.72) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.78). Modified PAQ-A scores were significantly associated with objectively assessed moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (r = 0.39), total physical activity (r = 0.42), self-reported fitness (r = 0.35), and physical activity self-efficacy (r = 0.32) (p ≤ 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The modified PAQ-A had acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Modified PAQ-A scores displayed weak-to-moderate correlations with objectively measured physical activity, self-reported fitness, and self-efficacy providing evidence of satisfactory criterion and construct validity, respectively. Further testing with more diverse English samples is recommended to provide a more complete assessment of the tool. Sequential Isotopic Signature Along Gladius Highlights Contrasted Individual Foraging Strategies of Jumbo Squid (Dosidicus gigas)
International audienceBackground: Cephalopods play a major role in marine ecosystems, but knowledge of their feeding ecology is limited. In particular, intra- and inter-individual variations in their use of resources has not been adequatly explored, although there is growing evidence that individual organisms can vary considerably in the way they use their habitats and resources. Methodology/Principal Findings: Using d13C and d15N values of serially sampled gladius (an archival tissue), we examined high resolution variations in the trophic niche of five large (.60 cm mantle length) jumbo squids (Dosidicus gigas) that were collected off the coast of Peru. We report the first evidence of large inter-individual differences in jumbo squid foraging strategies with no systematic increase of trophic level with size. Overall, gladius d13C values indicated one or several migrations through the squid's lifetime (,8-9 months), during which d15N values also fluctuated (range: 1 to 5%). One individual showed an unexpected terminal 4.6% d15N decrease (more than one trophic level), thus indicating a shift from higher- to lower-trophic level prey at that time. The data illustrate the high diversity of prey types and foraging histories of this species at the individual level. Conclusions/Significance: The isotopic signature of gladii proved to be a powerful tool to depict high resolution and ontogenic variations in individual foraging strategies of squids, thus complementing traditional information offered by stomach content analysis and stable isotopes on metabolically active tissues. The observed differences in life history strategies highlight the high degree of plasticity of the jumbo squid and its high potential to adapt to environmental changes
Examining the Content Validity of the Birthing Unit Design Spatial Evaluation Tool Within a Woman‐Centered Framework
Statistical practices of educational researchers: An analysis of their ANOVA, MANOVA, and ANCOVA analyses
Articles published in several prominent educational journals were examined to investigate the use of data-analysis tools by researchers in four research paradigms: between-subjects univariate designs, between-subjects multivariate designs, repeated measures designs, and covariance designs. In addition to examining specific details pertaining to the research design (e.g., sample size, group size equality/inequality) and methods employed for data analysis, we also catalogued whether: (a) validity assumptions were examined, (b) effect size indices were reported, (c) sample sizes were selected based on power considerations, and (d) appropriate textbooks and/or articles were cited to communicate the nature of the analyses that were performed. Our analyses imply that researchers rarely verify that validity assumptions are satisfied and accordingly typically use analyses that are nonrobust to assumption violations. In addition, researchers rarely report effect size statistics, nor do they routinely perform power analyses to determine sample size requirements.
