    Wavelets Applied to CMB Maps: a Multiresolution Analysis for Denoising

    Analysis and denoising of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps are performed using wavelet multiresolution techniques. The method is tested on 12∘.8×12∘.812^{\circ}.8\times 12^{\circ}.8 maps with resolution resembling the experimental one expected for future high resolution space observations. Semianalytic formulae of the variance of wavelet coefficients are given for the Haar and Mexican Hat wavelet bases. Results are presented for the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model. Denoising of simulated maps is carried out by removal of wavelet coefficients dominated by instrumental noise. CMB maps with a signal-to-noise, S/N∼1S/N \sim 1, are denoised with an error improvement factor between 3 and 5. Moreover we have also tested how well the CMB temperature power spectrum is recovered after denoising. We are able to reconstruct the CℓC_{\ell}'s up to l∼1500l\sim 1500 with errors always below 2020% in cases with S/N≥1S/N \ge 1.Comment: latex file 9 pages + 5 postscript figures + 1 gif figure (figure 6), to be published in MNRA

    Analysis of CMB maps with 2D wavelets

    We consider the 2D wavelet transform with two scales to study sky maps of temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). We apply this technique to simulated maps of small sky patches of size 12.8 \times 12.8 square degrees and 1.5' \times 1.5' pixels. The relation to the standard approach, based on the cl's is established through the introduction of the scalogram. We consider temperature fluctuations derived from standard, open and flat-Lambda CDM models. We analyze CMB anisotropies maps plus uncorrelated Gaussian noise (uniform and non-uniform) at idfferent S/N levels. We explore in detail the denoising of such maps and compare the results with other techniques already proposed in the literature. Wavelet methods provide a good reconstruction of the image and power spectrum.     Evolvability meets biogeography: evolutionary potential decreases at high and low environmental favourability

The final version is available from the Royal Society via the DOI in this record.Understanding and forecasting the effects of environmental change on wild populations requires knowledge on a critical question: Do populations have the ability to evolve in response to that change? However, our knowledge on how evolution works in wild conditions under different environmental circumstances is extremely limited. We investigated how environmental variation influences the evolutionary potential of phenotypic traits. We used published data to collect or calculate 135 estimates of evolvability of morphological traits of European wild bird populations. We characterised the environmental favourability of each population throughout the species’ breeding distribution. Our results suggest that the evolutionary potential of morphological traits decreases as environmental favourability becomes high or low. Strong environmental selection pressures and high intra-specific competition may reduce species’ evolutionary potential in low and high favourability areas, respectively. This suggests that species may be least able to adapt to new climate conditions at their range margins and at the centre. Our results underscore the need to consider the evolutionary potential of populations when studying the drivers of species distributions, particularly when predicting the effects of environmental change. We discuss the utility of integrating evolutionary dynamics into a biogeographical perspective to understand how environmental variation shapes evolutionary patterns.     Proper motions of the HH1 jet

    We describe a new method for determining proper motions of extended objects, and a pipeline developed for the application of this method. We then apply this method to an analysis of four epochs of [S~II] HST images of the HH~1 jet (covering a period of ∼20\sim 20~yr). We determine the proper motions of the knots along the jet, and make a reconstruction of the past ejection velocity time-variability (assuming ballistic knot motions). This reconstruction shows an "acceleration" of the ejection velocities of the jet knots, with higher velocities at more recent times. This acceleration will result in an eventual merging of the knots in ∼450\sim 450~yr and at a distance of ∼80"\sim 80" from the outflow source, close to the present-day position of HH~1.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    Leakage Subspace Precoding and Scheduling for Physical Layer Security in Multi-User XL-MIMO Systems

    We investigate the achievable secrecy sum-rate in a multi-user XL-MIMO system, on which user distances to the base station become comparable to the antenna array dimensions. We show that the consideration of spherical-wavefront propagation inherent to these set-ups is beneficial for physical-layer security, as it provides immunity against eavesdroppers located in similar angular directions that would otherwise prevent secure communication under classical planar-wavefront propagation. A leakage subspace precoding strategy is also proposed for joint secure precoding and user scheduling, which allows to improve the secrecy sum-rate compared to conventional zero-forcing based strategies, under different eavesdropper collusion strategies.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures.
