    Simulating whole supercomputer applications

    Get PDF
Architecture simulation tools are extremely useful not only to predict the performance of future system designs, but also to analyze and improve the performance of software running on well know architectures. However, since power and complexity issues stopped the progress of single-thread performance, simulation speed no longer scales with technology: systems get larger and faster, but simulators do not get any faster. Detailed simulation of full-scale applications running on large clusters with hundreds or thousands of processors is not feasible. In this paper we present a methodology that allows detailed simulation of large-scale MPI applications running on systems with thousands of processors with low resource cost. Our methodology allows detailed processor simulation, from the memory and cache hierarchy down to the functional units and the pipeline structure. This feature enables software performance analysis beyond what performance counters would allow. In addition, it enables performance prediction targeting non-existent architectures and systems, that is, systems for which no performance data can be used as a reference. For example, detailed analysis of the weather forecasting application WRF reveals that it is highly optimized for cache locality, and is strongly compute bound, with faster functional units having the greatest impact on its performance. Also, analysis of next-generation CMP clusters show that performance may start to decline beyond 8 processors per chip due to shared resource contention, regardless of the benefits of through-memory communication.Postprint (published version

A Straightforward Methodology to Obtain the Power Coefficients Matrices for Unbalanced Distribution Networks to be Used in Flexibility Markets

The objective of the paper is to address the congestion problem in a specific distribution line by means of sensitivity coefficients seeking an intelligent a ctivation of t he available flexibility, based not only on economic a spects but also on the efficient use of flexibility. This paper proposes a straightforward methodology to obtain the sensitivity coefficient matrices for the unbalanced distribution networks, employing the perturb-and-observe (P & O) approach to assure an efficient usage of flexible resources. This means that a small change in the active power value of a particular flexibility provider, either load or generator, is applied to evaluate the power variation, therefore the loading variation, in every line of the system. The paper shows how these coefficients can be implemented in at heoretical energy market by the market operators by validating its application in an unbalanced network case and then compared with a real balanced distribution network. The simulations have been carried out in DIgSILENT PowerFactory through its API in Python.H2020, 824414, CoordiNe

Communication, Education and social movements online: New Imaginaries, old utopias

    Get PDF
Due to the Internet arrival, the Social Movements, alternatives and critics, have considered it as a new scene capable to renew the traditional ways of intervention and collective action. Besides it is open the possibility to outdo the activism atomization of the social movements, organizing them in a global strategy, articulated upon nodes of local intervention. There is a renewed illusion, due to this inclusion of social movements in the Internet, understood as a new pedagogical tool for the organization, the debate, the broadcast and the social mobilization, which wake up old social utopias, that nowadays they are proposed as real and feasible utopias. This way we regard that the role of the citizenship, as a participant in the political power, could be replaced by a mere contract of enjoyment of goods and services in the Internet worldwide (Pérez Luño, 2004). So, the individual may find satisfied the technological utopia which includes the promise of social change. The tension generated by these to powers seems to be granting a privilege to an instrumental use of New Technologies in the transformation processes that promote the social movements. This way we may misunderstand the managing of utopias with simple strategies of online communication and education. Therefore, it is needed to overflow (in a metaphorical way) that instrumental interpretation of the Internet to release deep structural transformations and new imaginaries related to the utopia of a free communication and education media, at the service of a democratical society development.Universidad de Málaga. Get PDF
The progressive aging of society causes the rates of diseases associated with senescence to skyrocket, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which produces a progressive cognitive deterioration generating great dependence on those affected and whose care usually falls on a single caregiver, often with a heavy workload and deteriorating health. The objective of this systematic review is to deepen our understanding of the factors related to overload in informal caregivers of AD. The findings derived from the studies confirm the predominance of women in care-related tasks. The presence of high levels of burden on AD caregivers and the existence of moderating factors, such as resilience, coping strategies, positive aspects of care, religiosity, self-efficacy or perceived social support are also evident

This article shows the research results obtained through the application of the Dialogue Interstructuring Model in police education in Human Rights, for the development of generic skills necessary during the exercise of the police profession. Its methodology was based on the socio-critical paradigm, with a qualitative approach, through the case study design; the sample selection was given for convenience. The collection of information starts from the use of the In-Basket technique applied in two phases (pretest and posttest); With the results of the pretest, the initial diagnosis is made, from which six didactic sequences are built, preserving the opening, development and closing structure. In the pedagogical practice, observation and the field diary were used as data collection instruments. Once the thematic contents have been developed, a post-test application is carried out, evaluating the development of institutional competences by the students.
