Superprocesses as models for information dissemination in the Future Internet
Future Internet will be composed by a tremendous number of potentially
interconnected people and devices, offering a variety of services, applications
and communication opportunities. In particular, short-range wireless
communications, which are available on almost all portable devices, will enable
the formation of the largest cloud of interconnected, smart computing devices
mankind has ever dreamed about: the Proximate Internet. In this paper, we
consider superprocesses, more specifically super Brownian motion, as a suitable
mathematical model to analyse a basic problem of information dissemination
arising in the context of Proximate Internet. The proposed model provides a
promising analytical framework to both study theoretical properties related to
the information dissemination process and to devise efficient and reliable
simulation schemes for very large systems
A Mediterranean lifestyle reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease in the “Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra” (SUN) cohort
Background and aims: A healthy lifestyle is essential to prevent cardiovascular disease
(CVD). However, beyond dietary habits, there is a scarcity of studies comprehensively assessing
the typical traditional Mediterranean lifestyle with a multi-dimensional index. We assessed the
association between the Mediterranean lifestyle (measured with the MEDLIFE index including
diet, physical activity, and other lifestyle factors) and the incidence of CVD.
Methods and results: The “Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra” (SUN) project is a prospective,
dynamic and multipurpose cohort of Spanish university graduates. We calculated a MEDLIFE
score, composed of 28 items on food consumption, dietary habits, physical activity, rest, social
habits, and conviviality, for 18,631 participants by assigning 1 point for each typical Mediterra-
nean lifestyle factor achieved, for a theoretically possible final score ranging from 0 to 28 points.
During an average follow-up of 11.5 years, 172 CVD cases (myocardial infarction, stroke or cardio-
vascular death) were observed. An inverse association between the MEDLIFE score and the risk of
primary cardiovascular events was observed, with multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio
(HR) Z 0.50; (95% confidence interval, 0.31e0.81) for the highest MEDLIFE scores (14e23 points)
compared to the lowest scores (0e9 points), p (trend) Z 0.004.
Conclusion: A higher level of adherence to the Mediterranean lifestyle was significantly associ-
ated with a lower risk of CVD in a Spanish cohort. Public health strategies should promote the
Mediterranean lifestyle to preserve cardiovascular health
TeV-scale bileptons, see-saw type II and lepton flavor violation in core-collapse supernova
Electrons and electron neutrinos in the inner core of the core-collapse
supernova are highly degenerate and therefore numerous during a few seconds of
explosion. In contrast, leptons of other flavors are non-degenerate and
therefore relatively scarce. This is due to lepton flavor conservation. If this
conservation law is broken by some non-standard interactions, electron
neutrinos are converted to muon and tau-neutrinos, and electrons - to muons.
This affects the supernova dynamics and the supernova neutrino signal. We
consider lepton flavor violating interactions mediated by scalar bileptons,
i.e. heavy scalars with lepton number 2. It is shown that in case of TeV-mass
bileptons the electron fermi gas is equilibrated with non-electron species
inside the inner supernova core at a time-scale of order of (1-100) ms. In
particular, a scalar triplet which generates neutrino masses through the
see-saw type II mechanism is considered. It is found that supernova core is
sensitive to yet unprobed values of masses and couplings of the triplet.Comment: accepted to Eur.Phys.J.
Dark Energy and Neutrino CPT Violation
In this paper we study the dynamical CPT violation in the neutrino sector
induced by the dark energy of the Universe. Specifically we consider a dark
energy model where the dark energy scalar derivatively interacts with the
right-handed neutrinos. This type of derivative coupling leads to a
cosmological CPT violation during the evolution of the background field of the
dark energy. We calculate the induced CPT violation of left-handed neutrinos
and find the CPT violation produced in this way is consistent with the present
experimental limit and sensitive to the future neutrino oscillation

Association between Nephrotoxic Drug Combinations and Acute Kidney Injury in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Objective: To determine the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in infants exposed to nephrotoxic drug combinations admitted to 268 neonatal intensive care units managed by the Pediatrix Medical Group. Study design: We included infants born at 22-36 weeks gestational age, ≤120 days postnatal age, exposed to nephrotoxic drug combinations, with serum creatinine measurements available, and discharged between 2007 and 2016. To identify risk factors associated with a serum creatinine definition of AKI based on the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria, we performed multivariable logistic and Cox regression adjusting for gestational age, sex, birth weight, postnatal age, race/ethnicity, sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome, baseline serum creatinine, and duration of combination drug exposure. The adjusted odds of AKI were determined relative to gentamicin + indomethacin for the following nephrotoxic drug combinations: chlorothiazide + ibuprofen; chlorothiazide + indomethacin; furosemide + gentamicin; furosemide + ibuprofen; furosemide + tobramycin; ibuprofen + spironolactone; and vancomycin + piperacillin-tazobactam. Results: Among 8286 included infants, 1384 (17%) experienced AKI. On multivariable analysis, sepsis, lower baseline creatinine, and duration of combination therapy were associated with increased odds of AKI. Furosemide + tobramycin and vancomycin + piperacillin-tazobactam were associated with a decreased risk of AKI relative to gentamicin + indomethacin in both the multivariable and Cox regression models. Conclusions: In this cohort, infants receiving longer durations of nephrotoxic combination therapy had an increased odds of developing AKI
Search for heavy neutrinos mixing with tau neutrinos
We report on a search for heavy neutrinos (\nus) produced in the decay
D_s\to \tau \nus at the SPS proton target followed by the decay \nudecay in
the NOMAD detector. Both decays are expected to occur if \nus is a component
of .\
From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996-1998 runs with
protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with
background expectations was found. This allows to derive an upper limit on the
mixing strength between the heavy neutrino and the tau neutrino in the \nus
mass range from 10 to 190 . Windows between the SN1987a and Big Bang
Nucleosynthesis lower limits and our result are still open for future
experimental searches. The results obtained are used to constrain an

Metal enrichment processes
There are many processes that can transport gas from the galaxies to their
environment and enrich the environment in this way with metals. These metal
enrichment processes have a large influence on the evolution of both the
galaxies and their environment. Various processes can contribute to the gas
transfer: ram-pressure stripping, galactic winds, AGN outflows, galaxy-galaxy
interactions and others. We review their observational evidence, corresponding
simulations, their efficiencies, and their time scales as far as they are known
to date. It seems that all processes can contribute to the enrichment. There is
not a single process that always dominates the enrichment, because the
efficiencies of the processes vary strongly with galaxy and environmental

Dark Energy and Gravity
I review the problem of dark energy focusing on the cosmological constant as
the candidate and discuss its implications for the nature of gravity. Part 1
briefly overviews the currently popular `concordance cosmology' and summarises
the evidence for dark energy. It also provides the observational and
theoretical arguments in favour of the cosmological constant as the candidate
and emphasises why no other approach really solves the conceptual problems
usually attributed to the cosmological constant. Part 2 describes some of the
approaches to understand the nature of the cosmological constant and attempts
to extract the key ingredients which must be present in any viable solution. I
argue that (i)the cosmological constant problem cannot be satisfactorily solved
until gravitational action is made invariant under the shift of the matter
lagrangian by a constant and (ii) this cannot happen if the metric is the
dynamical variable. Hence the cosmological constant problem essentially has to
do with our (mis)understanding of the nature of gravity. Part 3 discusses an
alternative perspective on gravity in which the action is explicitly invariant
under the above transformation. Extremizing this action leads to an equation
determining the background geometry which gives Einstein's theory at the lowest

Non-standard interactions using the OPERA experiment
We investigate the implications of non-standard interactions on neutrino
oscillations in the OPERA experiment. In particular, we study the non-standard
interaction parameter . We show that the OPERA experiment
has a unique opportunity to reduce the allowed region for this parameter
compared with other experiments such as the MINOS experiment, mostly due to the
higher neutrino energies in the CNGS beam compared to the NuMI beam. We find
that OPERA is mainly sensitive to a combination of standard and non-standard
parameters and that a resulting anti-resonance effect could suppress the
expected number of events. Furthermore, we show that running OPERA for five
years each with neutrinos and anti-neutrinos would help in resolving the
degeneracy between the standard parameters and . This
scenario is significantly better than the scenario with a simple doubling of
the statistics by running with neutrinos for ten years.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, REVTeX
