    Null test for interactions in the dark sector

    Since there is no known symmetry in Nature that prevents a non-minimal coupling between the dark energy (DE) and cold dark matter (CDM) components, such a possibility constitutes an alternative to standard cosmology, with its theoretical and observational consequences being of great interest. In this paper we propose a new null test on the standard evolution of the dark sector based on the time dependence of the ratio between the CDM and DE energy densities which, in the standard Λ\LambdaCDM scenario, scales necessarily as a3a^{-3}. We use the latest measurements of type Ia supernovae, cosmic chronometers and angular baryonic acoustic oscillations to reconstruct the expansion history using model-independent Machine Learning techniques, namely, the Linear Model formalism and Gaussian Processes. We find that while the standard evolution is consistent with the data at 3σ3\sigma level, some deviations from the Λ\LambdaCDM model are found at low redshifts, which may be associated with the current tension between local and global determinations of H0H_0.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure

    Dissemination of Yersinia pestis During Bubonic Plague

    Yersinia pestis is a highly virulent bacterial pathogen with remarkable abilities to disseminate in a host. The ability of this Gram-negative bacterium to spread and replicate in its host results in high morbidity and mortality in humans. Bubonic plague is the most prevalent form of the disease and develops after Y. pestis is deposited into the skin of a susceptible host. Little is known about the events that occur after inoculation into the skin and that result in movement of bacteria to the lymph node that drains this site. Similar questions surround how the bacteria progress beyond the lymph node to survive systemically. This work focused on the use of a murine model and a fully virulent strain of plague to gain insights into how Y. pestis interacts with the host during dissemination. We describe an imaging approach to study bacterial dissemination in mice (Chapter 2). In this chapter, a bioluminescent strain of Y. pestis was used to track bacterial spread in mice by bioluminescence imaging using different routes of infection. We also studied the major events that define dissemination from the skin into the lymph node and that result in systemic dissemination (Chapter 3). We found that dissemination of Y. pestis into lymph nodes is restricted by a bottleneck that defines the final population that colonizes the host. By using confocal microscopy, we tracked bacteria at different stages of infection and identified important sites where host-pathogen interactions occur. Lastly, we established the importance of an intradermal model of inoculation we implemented after comparing it with a subcutaneous model that has been traditionally used in the field (Chapter 4). Our study contributes significantly to the understanding of host-pathogen interaction during bacterial infections. More specifically, our findings provide important information that advances our knowledge on Y. pestis pathogenesis and how the bacterium disseminates inside a host. Because of the scope of our research, these findings have relevant implications to fields as diverse as bacterial pathogenesis, cutaneous immunity, and vaccine development.Doctor of Philosoph

    Engineered microenvironments for synergistic VEGF - integrin signalling during vascularization

    We have engineered polymer-based microenvironments that promote vasculogenesis both in vitro and in vivo through synergistic integrin-growth factor receptor signalling. Poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) triggers spontaneous organization of fibronectin (FN) into nanonetworks which provide availability of critical binding domains. Importantly, the growth factor binding (FNIII12-14) and integrin binding (FNIII9-10) regions are simultaneously available on FN fibrils assembled on PEA. This material platform promotes synergistic integrin/VEGF signalling which is highly effective for vascularization events in vitro with low concentrations of VEGF. VEGF specifically binds to FN fibrils on PEA compared to control polymers (poly(methyl acrylate), PMA) where FN remains in a globular conformation and integrin/GF binding domains are not simultaneously available. The vasculogenic response of human endothelial cells seeded on these synergistic interfaces (VEGF bound to FN assembled on PEA) was significantly improved compared to soluble administration of VEGF at higher doses. Early onset of VEGF signalling (PLCγ1 phosphorylation) and both integrin and VEGF signalling (ERK1/2 phosphorylation) were increased only when VEGF was bound to FN nanonetworks on PEA, while soluble VEGF did not influence early signalling. Experiments with mutant FN molecules with impaired integrin binding site (FN-RGE) confirmed the role of the integrin binding site of FN on the vasculogenic response via combined integrin/VEGF signalling. In vivo experiments using 3D scaffolds coated with FN and VEGF implanted in the murine fat pad demonstrated pro-vascularization signalling by enhanced formation of new tissue inside scaffold pores.     The origin of the Acheulean: the 1.7 million-year-old site of FLK West, Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania)

    The appearance of the Acheulean is one of the hallmarks of human evolution. It represents the emergence of a complex behavior, expressed in the recurrent manufacture of large-sized tools, with standardized forms, implying more advance forethought and planning by hominins than those required by the precedent Oldowan technology. The earliest known evidence of this technology dates back to c. 1.7 Ma. and is limited to two sites (Kokiselei [Kenya] and Konso [Ethiopia]), both of which lack fauna. The functionality of these earliest Acheulean assemblages remains unknown. Here we present the discovery of another early Acheulean site also dating to c. 1.7 Ma from Olduvai Gorge. This site provides evidence of the earliest steps in developing the Acheulean technology and is the oldest Acheulean site in which stone tools occur spatially and functionally associated with the exploitation of fauna. Simple and elaborate large-cutting tools (LCT) and handaxes co-exist at FLK West, showing that complex cognition was present from the earliest stages of the Acheulean.     Milky Way demographics with the VVV survey. IV. PSF photometry from almost one billion stars in the Galactic bulge and adjacent southern disk

The inner regions of the Galaxy are severely affected by extinction, which limits our capability to study the stellar populations present there. The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey has observed this zone at near-infrared wavelengths where reddening is highly diminished. Aims. By exploiting the high resolution and wide field-of-view of the VVV images we aim to produce a deep, homogeneous, and highly complete database of sources that cover the innermost regions of our Galaxy. Methods. To better deal with the high crowding in the surveyed areas, we have used point spread function (PSF)-fitting techniques to obtain a new photometry of the VVV images, in the ZY JHK s near-infrared filters available. Results. Our final catalogs contain close to one billion sources, with precise photometry in up to five near-infrared filters, and they are already being used to provide an unprecedented view of the inner Galactic stellar populations. We make these catalogs publicly available to the community. Our catalogs allow us to build the VVV giga-CMD, a series of color-magnitude diagrams of the inner regions of the Milky Way presented as supplementary videos. We provide a qualitative analysis of some representative CMDs of the inner regions of the Galaxy, and briefly mention some of the studies we have developed with this new dataset so far.Peer reviewe

    Minimally Invasive Surgery Using a Shannon Burr for the Treatment of Hallux Valgus Deformity: A Systematic Review

    BACKGROUND: Recently there has been an increase in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for the correction of hallux valgus deformity. This systematic review aims to evaluate and present the current literature on MIS hallux valgus correction in studies reporting the use of the Shannon burr with distal metatarsal osteotomies to help establish evidence-based guidelines for surgeons using this technique. METHODS: Two independent authors performed a systematic literature search using the following databases: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) protocol and the Cochrane Handbook guidelines were followed. All studies included were published from 2008 to 2022 and included the use of the Shannon burr during distal metatarsal osteotomies MIS for hallux valgus and at least 12-month follow-up. The MINORS score criteria was used to evaluate the strength and quality of 17 studies by 3 authors. Statistical analysis and meta-analysis were not performed because of the heterogeneity of the included studies and the data being descriptive. RESULTS: A total of 17 studies were reviewed. A total of 911 subjects were included, and 1088 MIS procedures were performed. The average follow-up was 23.8 (12-59.1) months. American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scale and visual analog scale scores improved from 52.1 (41-62.5) to 90.3 (83.3-97.1) and 4.9 (3-8.2) to 0.8 (0-1.9). Satisfaction rates were very high among the studies that reported it. The hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, and distal metatarsal articular angle improved from 31.4 (23.5-44.1) to 11.1 (7-17.2), 13.4 (8.1-18.6) to 7.3 (4.2-10.3), and 12.3 (9-16.3) to 4.1 (1-6.7), respectively. The complication rate was 16.6%, and recurrence was 2.2%. Nonunion comprised 0.4%, infections 1.1%, nerve injury 2.2%, avascular necrosis 0%, hallux varus 0.09%, transfer metatarsalgia 0.1%, and hardware removal 6.2%. CONCLUSION: MIS for the treatment of hallux valgus using the Shannon burr appears to be a safe and effective therapy, with appropriate correction of the hallux valgus deformity, improvement in functional outcomes, high patient satisfaction, low recurrence, and acceptable complication rates.     En el desarrollo de sistemas de realidad virtual uno de los inconvenientes que se encuentran es la comunicación entre las aplicaciones y los dispositivos de adquisición de datos. Ya sea por no disponer de un método de acceso en forma directa o por necesitar independencia entre ambos, es decir que las aplicaciones corran en una plataforma y los dispositivos en otras. Para lograr esta independencia y a su vez permitir la integración de todo el sistema de realidad virtual, es necesario la implementación de algún protocolo de comunicaciones que permita esta vinculación heterogénea en tiempo real. Los dispositivos generalmente están asociados a funciones o características de los individuos que los utilizan y se necesita integrar los movimientos que estos representan hacia una interfaz gráfica que permita la realimentación neuronal del paciente y de este modo lograr la mejora cognitiva (efecto de neurofeedback deseado). El presente trabajo trata del análisis e implementación del protocolo de comunicaciones VRPN (Virtual Reality Peripheral Network) entre las partes de un entorno multimedia donde interactúan la adquisición de movimientos del usuario y la representación visual en un escenario virtual que permita la retroalimentación al usuario en tiempo real logrando una experiencia interactiva e inmersiva.     Perturbative expansions from Monte Carlo simulations at weak coupling: Wilson loops and the static-quark self-energy

    Perturbative coefficients for Wilson loops and the static-quark self-energy are extracted from Monte Carlo simulations at weak coupling. The lattice volumes and couplings are chosen to ensure that the lattice momenta are all perturbative. Twisted boundary conditions are used to eliminate the effects of lattice zero modes and to suppress nonperturbative finite-volume effects due to Z(3) phases. Simulations of the Wilson gluon action are done with both periodic and twisted boundary conditions, and over a wide range of lattice volumes (from 343^4 to 16416^4) and couplings (from β9\beta \approx 9 to β60\beta \approx 60). A high precision comparison is made between the simulation data and results from finite-volume lattice perturbation theory. The Monte Carlo results are shown to be in excellent agreement with perturbation theory through second order. New results for third-order coefficients for a number of Wilson loops and the static-quark self-energy are reported.Comment: 36 pages, 15 figures, REVTEX documen

    Recent developments on tau detection technologies and the construction of high intensity neutrino beams open the possibility of a high precision search for non-standard {\mu} - {\tau} flavour transition with neutrinos at short distances. The MINSIS - Main Injector Non-Standard Interaction Search- is a proposal under discussion to realize such precision measurement.
