Nonlinear Channel Equalization Approach for Microwave Communication Systems

The theoretical principles of intersymbol interference (ISI) and channel equalization in wireless communication systems are addressed. Several conventional and well-known equalization techniques are discussed and compared such as zero forcing (ZF) and maximum likelihood (ML). The main section in this chapter is devoted to an abstract concept of equalization approach, namely, dual channel equalization (DCE). The proposed approach is flexible and can be employed and integrated with other linear and nonlinear equalization approaches. Closed expressions for the achieved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER) in the case of ZF-DCE and ML-DCE are derived. According to the obtained outcomes, the DCE demonstrates promising improvements in the equalization performance (BER reduction) in comparison with the conventional techniques

Urban Water pricing and private interests' lobbying in small rural communities

It is difficult for small municipalities to ensure their urban water cycle complies with the principle of cost recovery established in the European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive. Unlike more populous municipalities, small municipalities face higher average production costs. However, at least in Spain, the price of water is, on average, lower in small municipalities. We question whether the low price of water in rural areas is due, at least in part, to people linked to agriculture, i.e., do farmers constitute a special interest group that hinders increases in the price of water? The main hypothesis was tested with data taken from Torre-Cardela, a municipality in southern Spain with close to 800 inhabitants. In the research, a contingent valuation analysis was carried out to analyze respondents' willingness to pay in the event of a hypothetical increase in the price of water to help cover the service costs. Contrary to expectations, the study yields no evidence that the agricultural population is more resistant to price rises than the rest of the citizens surveyed. In fact, results show that people involved in the agricultural sector would be willing to accept a hypothetical increase in water tariffs in between 15% and 25% over the current tariff, while for the rest of the population this same increase would be lower (in between 9% and 20%)

OPTIMIZATION BASED CONTROL OF A DIRECT ROTARY DRYER

Indexación: Web of Science; ScieloRESUMEN: Este trabajo presenta el control de un secador rotatorio directo basado en optimización no lineal. Esta metodología permite auto-sintonizar dinámicamente un controlador PI o PID, mejorando claramente el control del proceso respecto de la sintonización clásica. El control del proceso se realiza a través de simulación computacional vía Matlab y su verificación a través de un proceso piloto, lo que permite apreciar la potencialidad de la sintonía dinámica que se propone. Los resultados, tiempo de respuesta y dinámica de control posibilitan que investigación futura pueda escalar esta propuesta desde el laboratorio a procesos industriales.ABSTRACT: This paper presents the control of a direct rotary dryer based on nonlinear optimization. This methodology allows the dynamic self-tuning of PI or PID controller, clearly improving process control over the classic tuning approach. Process control is done through Matlab via computer simulation and verification through a pilot process, which allows us to appreciate the potential of the proposed dynamic tuning. The results, response time and dynamic control allow us to scale future research from the laboratory (pilot scale) to industrial processes.http://ref.scielo.org/swb3h
