"Does replication groups scoring reduce false positive rate in SNP interaction discovery?: Response"

<p>Abstract</p> <p/> <p>A response to Toplak et al: Does replication groups scoring reduce false positive rate in SNP interaction discovery? BMC Genomics 2010, 11:58.</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The genomewide evaluation of genetic epistasis is a computationally demanding task, and a current challenge in Genetics. HFCC (Hypothesis-Free Clinical Cloning) is one of the methods that have been suggested for genomewide epistasis analysis. In order to perform an exhaustive search of epistasis, HFCC has implemented several tools and data filters, such as the use of multiple replication groups, and direction of effect and control filters. A recent article has claimed that the use of multiple replication groups (as implemented in HFCC) does not reduce the false positive rate, and we hereby try to clarify these issues.</p> <p>Results/Discussion</p> <p>HFCC uses, as an analysis strategy, the possibility of replicating findings in multiple replication groups, in order to select a liberal subset of preliminary results that are above a statistical criterion and consistent in direction of effect. We show that the use of replication groups and the direction filter reduces the false positive rate of a study, although at the expense of lowering the overall power of the study. A post-hoc analysis of these selected signals in the combined sample could then be performed to select the most promising results.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Replication of results in independent samples is generally used in scientific studies to establish credibility in a finding. Nonetheless, the combined analysis of several datasets is known to be a preferable and more powerful strategy for the selection of top signals. HFCC is a flexible and complete analysis tool, and one of its analysis options combines these two strategies: A preliminary multiple replication group analysis to eliminate inconsistent false positive results, and a post-hoc combined-group analysis to select the top signals.</p

The Co-Working as a Social Innovation. A Qualitative Study of the Reasons for Creating Co-Working Spaces

El cotrabajo o coworkingconstituye una forma de innovación social emergente dentro del contexto de la economía colaborativa. Se trata de una respuesta de las clases creativas a la situación de precariedad laboral y al aislamiento consecuencia de las transformaciones en las formas de trabajo, así como de emprendedores de determinados sectores. Su expansión y desarrollo se circunscribe fundamentalmente a la última década, tratándose de una innovación aún en situación de flexibilidad interpretativa. A través de una investigación cualitativa aplicada a los espacios de coworkingen la ciudad de Alicante (Comunidad Valenciana, España), se profundiza y desarrollan estas cuestiones mediante datos empíricos, detectándose dos dinámicasde desarrollo diferentes en los espacios en función del perfil profesional de quienes promueven los espacios, configurándose espacios de coworkingdiferentes en base a las motivaciones.Coworking is an emerging social innovation within the collaborative economy context. It is a response of the creative classes to the situation of precarious work and the transformations in the forms of work, as well as by the entrepreneurs. Its expansion and development are fundamentally limited to the last decade, being the case of an innovation still in a situation of interpretative flexibility. Through a qualitative research applied to the coworking spaces in the city of Alicante (Valencian Community, Spain), we can deepen and develop these issues through empirical data, detecting two different development dynamics in the spaces according to the professional profile of its promoters, configuring different coworking spaces in based on the motivations

El dolmen del Alto de Lodos (Rasines, Cantabria)

La excavación del dolmen del Alto de Lodos ha proporcionado los primeros datos para el estudio del Fenómeno Megalítico en Cantabria. Se trata de un dolmen sencillo con cámara de tipo cistoide y un túmulo formado por acumulación de piedras, con algunas lajas colocadas en sentido oblícuo, cuya función debió ser la contención de la masa pétrea. La violación del monumento que ha deteriorado parte de su estructura no ha permitido documentar depósitos intactos; no obstante, algunos de los elementos líticos recuperados corresponden a restos de ajuar y permiten sugerir, por relación con los aparecidos en contextos relacionables, una datación para la utilización del dolmen quizá en la transición del cuarto al tercer milenio a.e.The excavation of the dolmen Alto de Lodos has provided the first data for the study of the Megalithic Phenomenon in Cantabria. It is a simple dolmen with a cystoid type chamber and a tomb formed by accumulation of stones, with some slabs placed obliquely, whose function must have been the containment of the stone mass. The violation of the monument, that has deteriorated part of its structure, has not allowed us to document intact deposits. However, some of the lithic elements recovered correspond to remains of trousseau and allow us to suggest, by relation with those found in nearby contexts, a dating for the use of the dolmen, perhaps in the transition from the fourth to the third millennium a.e
