10B+ZnS(Ag)as an alternative to 3He-based detectors for Radiation Portal Monitors
Typical radiation portal monitor systems, RPM, deployed to detect illicit trafficking of radioactive materials include a set of gamma-ray detectors and neutron detectors. Usually the employed neutron detectors are pressurized 3 He-based neutron detectors tubes. Due the shortage of 3 He reported since 2009, the amount of 3 He available for use in gas proportional counter neutron detectors has become limited, while the demand has significantly increased, especially for homeland security applications. For this reason, many different alternatives are being investigated for its use in RPM systems. The aim of this work is to study a scintillation detector ZnS(Ag) mixed with highly enriched 10B, 10B+ZnS(Ag). Using Monte Carlo methods, MCNPX code, the response of two neutron detectors based on 10B+ZnS(Ag), manufactured by BridgePort Instruments LLC with different geometries, were estimated by calculating the number of 10B(n,α) 7 Li reactions for 29 monoenergetic neutron sources. Measurements and models were made, and both detectors were compared. The importance of the distance with respect to the ground was studied. The response with a 252Cf moderated neutron source (0.5 cm lead and 2.5 cm polyethylene) was calculated in order to compare with other studied alternatives in the USA by Pacific National Northwest Laboratory, PNNL. With these results we conclude that neutron detectors using 10B+ZnS(Ag) are an interesting alternative for replacing 3 He detectors. From the analysis with MCNPX we propose an improvement in the detector design
Arachidonic acid effect on the allosteric gating mechanism of BK (Slo1) channels associated with the β1 subunit
Arachidonic acid (AA) is a fatty acid involved in the modulation of several ion channels. Previously, we reported that AA activates the high conductance Ca2+- and voltage-dependent K+ channel (BK) in vascular smooth muscle depending on the expression of the auxiliary β1 subunit. Here, using the patch-clamp technique on BK channel co-expressed with β1 subunit in a heterologous cell expression system, we analyzed whether AA modifies the three functional modules involved in the channel gating: the voltage sensor domain (VSD), the pore domain (PD), and the intracellular calcium sensor domain (CSD). We present evidence that AA activates BK channel in a direct way, inducing VSD stabilization on its active configuration observed as a significant left shift in the Q-V curve obtained from gating currents recordings. Moreover, AA facilitates the channel opening transitions when VSD are at rest, and the CSD are unoccupied. Furthermore, the activation was independent of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration and reduced when the BK channel was co-expressed with the Y74A mutant of the β1 subunit. These results allow us to present new insigths in the mechanism by which AA modulates BK channels co-expressed with its auxiliary β1 subunit.Fil: Martín, Pedro. A study of the relationship between empathy and creativity in Colombian students and their educational implications
The importance of cognitive and emotional variables in learning is undeniable. The present work seeks to analyze the relationship between the empathy and creativity variables in a sample of 65 Colombian students (12.72 ± 1.57 years old, distributed between 10 and 16 years old) according to age and gender. We used a descriptive and correlational design, as well as a quasi-experimental design based on the objectives of the analysis. The results show that there is a statistically significant and negative correlation between age and the cognitive dimension of empathy, just like this with creativity. In addition, there is a significant and positive correlation between age and creativity and age and affective empathy. On the other hand, analyzes of correlations isolating groups according to gender reflect more affective empathy in the female than in the male gender. Considering the correlations separating the age ranges, it was observed that in the older students (14-16 years) there is a statistically significant and positive correlation between creativity and cognitive empathy. Regarding comparisons between groups of independent samples, we found that cognitive empathy is higher in the 10 to 13 age group, and that overall empathy is greater in the female gender. The results found in this study are discussed and the Educational implications.</p
The sector deposits in the walled complex Xllangchic An (ex Uhle palace), is composed of various structures (patios, plazas, hearings, deposits and roads) that when intertwine creates a context storage; but from this trait some ques tions are arise: What goods were stored?, Who controlled the storage?, How were the deposits?, How was the managed this sector?, What was the purpose of this activity? The storage of goods is an activity realized since very early periods and the late intermediate is not the exception, but the geography, environment and cultural load plays a transcendental role in the ways of realized this same activity, so in this early walled complex is estimated to record particular characteristics that differ it from other pre-Hispanic sites
Predicting the length of mechanical ventilation in acute respiratory disease syndrome using machine learning: The PIONEER Study
Background: The ability to predict a long duration of mechanical ventilation (MV) by clinicians is very limited. We assessed the value of machine learning (ML) for early prediction of the duration of MV > 14 days in patients with moderate-to-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Methods: This is a development, testing, and external validation study using data from 1173 patients on MV ≥ 3 days with moderate-to-severe ARDS. We first developed and tested prediction models in 920 ARDS patients using relevant features captured at the time of moderate/severe ARDS diagnosis, at 24 h and 72 h after diagnosis with logistic regression, and Multilayer Perceptron, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest ML techniques. For external validation, we used an independent cohort of 253 patients on MV ≥ 3 days with moderate/severe ARDS. Results: A total of 441 patients (48%) from the derivation cohort (n = 920) and 100 patients (40%) from the validation cohort (n = 253) were mechanically ventilated for >14 days [median 14 days (IQR 8–25) vs. 13 days (IQR 7–21), respectively]. The best early prediction model was obtained with data collected at 72 h after moderate/severe ARDS diagnosis. Multilayer Perceptron risk modeling identified major prognostic factors for the duration of MV > 14 days, including PaO2/FiO2, PaCO2, pH, and positive end-expiratory pressure. Predictions of the duration of MV > 14 days showed modest discrimination [AUC 0.71 (95%CI 0.65–0.76)]. Conclusions: Prolonged MV duration in moderate/severe ARDS patients remains difficult to predict early even with ML techniques such as Multilayer Perceptron and using data at 72 h of diagnosis. More research is needed to identify markers for predicting the length of MV. This study was registered on 14 August 2023 at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT NCT05993377)
