Moving forward: The Japanese kelp Undaria pinnatifida (harvey) suringar, 1873 expands in Northern Patagonia, Argentina

Increasingly, global trade and human movement have been transporting species between regions. Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar, 1873, a macroalgae native to Korea and Japan, has been transported and became established in several temperate regions of the world. Here we report its presence in a new coastal area of northern Patagonia, Argentina, with a description of the sporophytes.Fil: Pereyra, Patricio Javier. Universidad Nacional del Comahue. Signaling and financial market impact of chile’s central bank communication: a content analysis approach

    Get PDF
The Central Bank of Chile determines Chile’s monetary policy rate and circulates press releases that explain policy decisions after each of its policy meetings. The information contained in these press releases includes current policies, economic outlook, and signals about likely future policies. In this paper, we examine this type of policy communication by using semi-automated content analysis to study the information contained in the releases. Based on this information, we create a quantitative measure that we call the sentiment score index, which we then use to evaluate the effectiveness of the central bank’s communication strategy. In this examination, we analyze whether the central bank’s communication conveys information regarding the future path of the policy rate. We also study the impact of the monetary policy statement on financial markets. We find that the central bank’s communication provides information that helps anticipate the future stance of monetary policy and that causes significant short-term impacts on equity markets

Towards Competencies os Sustainability in Engineering Degrees: Project based service-learning experiences

    Get PDF
Comunicació presentada al 13th International Conference on Society & Materials, SAM13 (Pisa, 20-21 May 2019)In the present work, a series of collaborative service-learning (SL) experiences carried out in the Universitat Jaume I de Castelló and University of the Basque Country will be presented. These experiences have been developed with in undergraduate courses, bachelor thesis and master thesis. The work points out how these experiences can serve as a toolf or teaching coordination at various levels: horizontal coordination with in a year in one degree, coordination between different degrees orinter-university coordination. The potential of these experiences makes them a very powerful methodological tool that can help not, only the students and the extra curricular agents involved, but also the teaching itself

Influence of the semantic content of urban sounds in the identity of outer spaces

This paper shows the influence of the semantic content of urban sounds in the subjective evaluation of outer spaces. The study is based on the analysis conducted in three neighboring and integrated urban spaces with a different form of social ownership in the city of Cordoba, Argentina. It shows that the type of sound source present at each site influence, by its semantic content, in the user´s identification and permanence in the place. The noise present in a soundscape is able to have a high semantic content, and therefore the sound has a particular meaning for the perceiver. Every particular social group influences the production of their own sounds and how they perceive them. This allows to consider the sound as one of the factors that define the sense of "place" or "no place" of a certain urban space. Evidently the sounds, and their ability to evoke and characterize the environment, cannot be ignored in the construction and recovery of anthropological sites. This urban culture is unique and specific to every society. Thepublic spaces, with their soundscape, are part of the construction of the urban identity of a city. It is shown that for identical general sound levels present in each of the spaces, the level of annoyance or discomfort, in relation to the subjective acoustic quality, is different. This is the result of the influence of semantic content of the sounds present in each urban space. Coinciding with other similar research, the level of discomfort or annoyance decreases as the presence of natural sounds such as water, the wind in the trees or the birds singing increases, even when the objective values of noise level of natural sounds are higher

Relationship between objective and subjective indicators in urban soundscape analysis. The case of Cordoba - Argentina

    Get PDF
This paper presents the main results of a comparative evaluation of some acoustical parameters with the user´s perception of urban sounds. The study was carried out in three open spaces integrated with different environmental characteristics but similar objective conditions of urban noise. The subjective evaluation was done by means of a survey simultaneously with the objective measurements. The results of the crossed analysis confirmed that in environments with similar noise levels not always exists direct correlation between the objetive indicators and the acoustic comfort of the people. To predict the acustical quality of the soundscape it is necessary to consider aspects such as the background noise and the perception of natural or technological sounds as complements of the general sound level

    Correlations in neutrino-nucleus scattering

    Get PDF
We present a detailed study of charged-current quasielastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and of the influence of correlations on one- and two-nucleon knockout processes. The quasielastic neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections, including the influence of long-range correlations, are evaluated within a continuum random phase approximation approach. The short-range correlation formalism is implemented in the impulse approximation by shifting the complexity induced by the correlations from the wave functions to the operators. The model is validated by confronting (e,e)(e,e^\prime) cross-section predictions with electron scattering data in the kinematic region where the quasielastic channel is expected to dominate. Further, the 12^{12}C(ν,μ)(\nu,\mu^-) experiments are studied. Double differential cross sections relevant for neutrino-oscillation 12^{12}C(ν,μ)(\nu,\mu^-) cross sections, accounting for long- and short-range correlations in the one-particle emission channel and short-range correlations in the two-particle two-hole channel, are presented for kinematics relevant for recent neutrino-nucleus scattering measurements.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Modern Towed Systems: New developments of multipurpose platforms

    Get PDF
Towed systems for the inspection of trawl netshave been in use for several decades. Mariscope got into the game with thedevelopment of the Magnus Tow for the German Bundesanstalt für Fischrei inHamburg in 1995. This system used Magnus rotors instead of propellers toposition itself in the trawl net during the trawl. This system was a hybridsince propulsion was used to position the unit at the right place during theoperation within the net. The company has developed a new hybrid system withoutrotors: the Observer III. The first application is a standalone system to beattached inside a trawl net during operation. Here, the position is fixed, butthe system needs to automatically start and stop recording and control thelights and other sensors in order to reduce power consumption.Fil: Haag, Christian. Influence of coastal structures on equilibrium beach

    Get PDF
An equilibrium beach profile model for a beach affected by a coastal structure is presented. The model is based on the well-known energy flux approach proposed by Dean (1977). The effect of the structure is taken into account by considering the modification that the structure generates on the wave energy flux. The model is then applied to several cases that are usually found along the littoral, namely a perched beach and a reefprotected beach. Several field and laboratory data are used to analyze the merit of the proposed model for describing the equilibrium condition of a beach profile affected by a coastal structure. A good comparison is obtained
