Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) for large scale grid connected power plants have been exten- sively studied in order to provide cost effective electricity. The following study focuses on an indirect particle based CSP plant using supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycle. The plant has a central receiver technology which is composed of a central tower with an open vol- umetric air receiver (OVAR), heliostats, which reflect and redirect the sun’s rays towards the OVAR and heating up the heat transfer fluid (HTF), particle thermal energy storage (TES), and a sCO2 power cycle. A technical and economic analysis was performed on the CSP plant utiliz- ing Python to model both the thermodynamic and economic performance of the plant. Based on this model an optimization analysis was performed in order to design a reference case. The reference case resulted in a CSP plant with a gross power of 30 MWe, 6 hour of TES, and a 225 meter tower. The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) resulted in $113.01/MWh with a capacity factor (CF) of 48.80%. Additionally, two sensitivity analysis was performed on the reference case. The first sensitivity analysis showed how increasing the heat exchanger effectiveness and receiver efficiency resulted in a CF higher that 50%. While the costs for the heat exchanger, TES and particles mainly affected the CAPEX and LCOE which showed a linear proportion with the LCOE and CAPEX increasing steadily as costs increased. The second sensitivity analysis al- tered the cold outlet temperatures using the pinch analysis. Results showed a drastic decrease in CAPEX and LCOE and on average a reduction in mass flow rates. Additionally, this new model was tested to analyze the impact the heat exchanger effectiveness and costs, storage ca- pacity, gross power and heat exchanger area could impact the performance. Overall, the higher the temperature difference the smaller the heat exchanger. Prior to presenting these findings the the first chapter of the master thesis will introduce the research, its aims and objectives and a brief description of the methodology. The second chapter will cover the literature review followed by the third chapter describing the modelling methodology. The modelling methodol- ogy will present the main equations utilized for both the thermodynamic and economic model. In the fourth chapter, the results will be described showcasing the optimization analysis, the reference case, and a sensitivity analyses. The fifth chapter will cover the conclusion and any research limitations encountered along with future works. The sixth and seven chapters will cover any environmental impacts of the CSP plant and a projection of the master thesis’ budget, respectively

Addressing inequity in health and health care in Mexico.

    No full text
Despite the fact that life expectancy at birth in Mexico has improved from forty-two years in 1940 to seventy-three in 2000, major inequalities persist in health and access to health care. The Mexican health care system has evolved into a series of disjointed subsystems that are incapable of delivering universal health insurance. Without greatly restructuring the way health care is financed, performance with respect to equity will remain poor. This paper presents the inequities of the system and describes how the current system contributes to the status quo rather than redressing the situation. After tracing the origins of the present system, we discuss policy initiatives for moving toward universal health insurance

Shale Gas: Opportunities and Challenges between Mexico and the United States

    Get PDF
Would it be it better for Mexico to remain a net importing partner of natural gas from the United States or to encourage its own Mexican Gas Revolution? Mexico has an estimate 545 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of shale natural gas reserves, and trillions of additional cubic feet of conventional reserves. Nevertheless, the country has remained a net importer of natural gas due to underdevelopment. Meanwhile, shale gas production on the other side of the border has increased significantly over the past decade, causing United States gas prices to drop. Due to its close proximity to the major shale field development in South and West Texas, Mexico is particularly well-positioned to take advantage of unconventional extraction techniques and apply them in Mexico. This article examines the legal, economic, and environmental challenges and opportunities of the unconventional production landscape in Mexico in order to propose effective solutions by which Mexico can take advantage of its own resources

A set of five fungal species, Botrytis cinerea, Trichoderma viride and Eutypa lata, and the endophytic fungi Colletotrichum crassipes and Xylaria sp., was used in screening for microbial biocatalysts to detect monooxygenase and alcohol dehydrogenase activities (for the stereoselective reduction of carbonyl compounds). 4-Ethylcyclohexanone and acetophenone were biotransformed by the fungal set. The main reaction pathways involved reduction and hydroxylations at several positions including tertiary carbons. B. cinerea was very effective in the bioreduction of both substrates leading to the chiral alcohol (S)-1- phenylethanol in up to 90% enantiomeric excess, and the cis–trans ratio for 4-ethylcyclohexanol was 0:100. trans-4-Ethyl-1-(1S-hydroxyethyl)cyclohexanol, obtained from biotransformation by means of an acyloin-type reaction, is reported here for the first time. The absolute configurations of the compounds trans-4-ethyl-1-(1S-hydroxyethyl)cyclohexanol and 4-(1S- and 4-(1R-hydroxyethyl)cyclohexanone were determined by NMR analysis of the corresponding Mosher’s esters

Individuo, persona, sujeto.
