The effects of halogen elements on the opening of an icosahedral B12 framework
The fully halogenated or hydrogenated B12X12 (X = H, F, Cl, Br and I)
clusters are confirmed to be icosahedral. On the other hand, the bare B12
cluster is shown to have a planar structure. A previous study showed that a
transformation from an icosahedron to a plane happens when 5 to 7 iodine atoms
are substituted. Later, the transition was confirmed to be seven iodine
substitutions based on an infrared spectroscopy study. In this study, we
investigated the effects of different halogen atoms on the opening of the B12
icosahedral cage by means of density functional theory calculations. We found
that the halogen elements do not have significant effects on the geometries of
the clusters. The computed IR spectra show similar representative peaks for all
halogen substituted clusters. Interestingly, we found a blue-shift in the IR
spectra with the increase in the mass of the halogen atoms. Further, we
compared the Gibbs free energies at different temperatures for different
halogen atoms. The results show that the Gibbs free energy differences between
open and close structures of B12X7 become larger when heavier halogen atoms are
present. This interesting finding was subsequently investigated by energy

Co3O4 Nanocrystals on Graphene as a Synergistic Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction
Catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions are at the heart of
key renewable energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting.
Despite tremendous efforts, developing oxygen electrode catalysts with high
activity at low costs remains a grand challenge. Here, we report a hybrid
material of Co3O4 nanocrystals grown on reduced graphene oxide (GO) as a
high-performance bi-functional catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and
oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While Co3O4 or graphene oxide alone has little
catalytic activity, their hybrid exhibits an unexpected, surprisingly high ORR
activity that is further enhanced by nitrogen-doping of graphene. The
Co3O4/N-doped graphene hybrid exhibits similar catalytic activity but superior
stability to Pt in alkaline solutions. The same hybrid is also highly active
for OER, making it a high performance non-precious metal based bi-catalyst for
both ORR and OER. The unusual catalytic activity arises from synergetic
chemical coupling effects between Co3O4 and graphene.Comment: published in Nature Material
Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width

Transgenic Cry1Ab Rice Does Not Impact Ecological Fitness and Predation of a Generalist Spider
Background: The commercial release of rice genetically engineered to express a Cry1Ab protein from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) for control of Lepidoptera in China is a subject of debate. One major point of the debate has focused on the ecological safety of Bt rice on nontarget organisms, especially predators and parasitoids that help control populations of insect pests. Methodology/Principal Findings: A tritrophic bioassay was conducted to evaluate the potential impact of Cry1Abexpressing rice on fitness parameters of a predaceous ground spider (Pardosa pseudoannulata (Bösenberg et Strand)) that had fed on Bt rice-fed brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens (Sta˚l)) nymphs. Survival, development time and fecundity of this spider were not different when they were fed with Bt rice-fed or non-Bt rice-fed prey. Furthermore, ELISA and PCR gut assays, as well as a functional response trial, indicated that predation by P. pseudoannulata was not significantly different in Bt rice or non-Bt rice fields. Conclusions/Significance: The transgenic Cry1Ab rice lines tested in this study had no adverse effects on the survival, developmental time and fecundity of P. pseudoannulata in the laboratory or on predation under field conditions. Large-Scale Brain Networks in Board Game Experts: Insights from a Domain-Related Task and Task-Free Resting State
Cognitive performance relies on the coordination of large-scale networks of brain regions that are not only temporally correlated during different tasks, but also networks that show highly correlated spontaneous activity during a task-free state. Both task-related and task-free network activity has been associated with individual differences in cognitive performance. Therefore, we aimed to examine the influence of cognitive expertise on four networks associated with cognitive task performance: the default mode network (DMN) and three other cognitive networks (central-executive network, dorsal attention network, and salience network). During fMRI scanning, fifteen grandmaster and master level Chinese chess players (GM/M) and fifteen novice players carried out a Chinese chess task and a task-free resting state. Modulations of network activity during task were assessed, as well as resting-state functional connectivity of those networks. Relative to novices, GM/Ms showed a broader task-induced deactivation of DMN in the chess problem-solving task, and intrinsic functional connectivity of DMN was increased with a connectivity pattern associated with the caudate nucleus in GM/Ms. The three other cognitive networks did not exhibit any difference in task-evoked activation or intrinsic functional connectivity between the two groups. These findings demonstrate the effect of long-term learning and practice in cognitive expertise on large-scale brain networks, suggesting the important role of DMN deactivation in expert performance and enhanced functional integration of spontaneous activity within widely distributed DMN-caudate circuitry, which might better support high-level cognitive control of behavior
Branching fraction measurements of χc0 and χc2 to π0π0 and ηη
Using a sample of 1.06×108 ψ ′ decays collected by the BESIII detector, χc0 and χc2 decays into π0π0 and ηη are studied. The branching fraction results are Br(χc0→π 0π0)=(3.23±0.03±0.23±0.14)×10 -3, Br(χc2→π0π0)=(8.8±0.2±0.6±0.4)×10 -4, Br(χc0→ηη)=(3.44±0.10±0. 24±0.2)×10 -3, and Br(χc2→ηη)=(6. 5±0.4±0.5±0.3)×10 -4, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic due to this measurement, and systematic due to the branching fractions of ψ ′→ γχcJ. Measurement of the matrix element for the decay η′→ηπ +π -
The Dalitz plot of η⊃′→ηπ⊃+π⊃- decay is studied using (225.2±2.8)×106 J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e⊃+e⊃- collider. With the largest sample of η⊃′ decays to date, the parameters of the Dalitz plot are determined in a generalized and a linear representation. Also, the branching fraction of J/ψ→γη⊃′ is determined to be (4.84±0.03±0.24)×10⊃-3, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. © 2011 American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio
First observation of the decays χcJ→π0π0π0π0
We present a study of the P-wave spin-triplet charmonium χ cJ decays (J=0, 1, 2) into π0π0π0π0. The analysis is based on 106×106 ψ⊃′ decays recorded with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII electron positron collider. The decay into the π0π0π0π0 hadronic final state is observed for the first time. We measure the branching fractions B(χ c0→π0π0π0π0)=(3.34±0. 06±0.44)×10⊃-3, B(χ c1→π0π0π0π0) =(0.57±0.03±0.08)×10⊃-3, and B(χ c2→π0π0π0π0)=(1.21±0.05±0.16) ×10⊃-3, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematical, respectively. © 2011 American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio
