Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of nonsurgical root canal treatment (nRCT) and the healing of asymptomatic apical periodontitis (AAP) on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in a Brazilian population. Materials and Methods: This prospective longitudinal observational study included 56 adults, in which 84 teeth with asymptomatic apical periodontitis underwent nonsurgical root canal treatment. Socio-demographic and medical data were collected; the primary outcome oral health-related quality of life was measured by the short form of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Statistical analysis was carried out by Mann-Whitney U-test, and changes in the oral health-related quality of life scores post-treatment were estimated by Student t-test. Results: The mean age was 51.0±15.2 years, with 53.5% of females. Overall, nRCT significantly improved the OHRQoL (P<0.001, effect size=0.76). Gender (female) was associated with a higher OHRQoL after nRCT (P<0.05). OHIP-14 showed a significant reduction six months after root canal treatment compared to baseline scores. Conclusion: Present findings revealed that nonsurgical root canal treatment improved the oral health-related quality of life in patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis

The objective of this work was to determine the general and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA, respectively) of six soybean (Glycine max) parents, in order to identify the promising ones and their best combinations for the development of superior lines for earliness and grain yield, as well as the best evaluation season. Six parents and their 15 hybrids were evaluated in a randomized complete block design, during the 2014 winter and 2015/2016 summer, in a greenhouse. The data obtained for number of days to flowering, cycle, and grain yield were analyzed by Griffing’s method 2, model 1. Contrasting results were obtained for the two seasons, with a shorter cycle and a higher yield in the summer. The highest GCA for cycle is observed for the 'MSOY6101' and 'MSOY9144RR' parents, with negative and positive signs, respectively. 'TMG123RR' shows the highest GCA for grain yield. The highest SCA for days to flowering and cycle is associated with the 'SYN9078RR' × 'MSOY9144RR' and 'TMG123RR' × 'MSOY9144RR' crosses, respectively. However, the highest SCA for grain yield is observed for 'MSOY6101' × 'MSOY9144RR', with a positive value, and for 'TMG801' × 'MSOY9144RR', with a negative value, during the summer

METHODS: The study was carried out in Pelotas, a city in the Southern region of Brazil, between October and November 2000. Mothers (n=410) were interviewed in the hospital using two questionnaires on obstetric and psychosocial data. Later, these mothers were visited at home, within 30 to 45 days after delivery. Occurrence of postpartum depressive symptoms was assessed by the Hamilton Scale for Depression. Chi-square test was used for comparison between proportions and non conditional logistic regression was utilized in the multivariate analysis. Data analysis was conducted hierarchically: economic variables in the first level, sociodemographic in the second level, the obstetrics variables in the third level and, in the fourth level, the psychosocial variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of postpartum depression observed in this sample was 19.1%. Family income (OR=5.24; CI 95%: 2.00-13.69), preference as to the child's gender (boys: OR=3.49; CI 95%: 1.76-6.93) and thinking about interrupting the pregnancy (OR=2.52; CI 95%: 1.33-4.76), were variables associated with postpartum depression. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that low economic status of the puerperal woman and nonacceptance of pregnancy are key elements in the development of postpartum depression

Low level resistance of wild poinsettia biotypes to glyphosate and alternative chemical control

In the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Southern Brazil, glyphosate has not been capable of controlling wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) in soybean fields, thus, suggesting resistance to this herbicide. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating sensitivity of wild poinsettia biotypes to glyphosate, identifying the occurrence of resistance of wild poinsettia to the herbicide in RS state and determining the resistance factor of wild poinsettia biotypes under suspicion, besides assessing other herbicides as alternative controls. Two greenhouse experiments, which lasted two years, were conducted by a completely randomized design with four replications. Six biotypes (Factor A) and eight doses of glyphosate (Factor B) were used for getting the dose-response curve. Regarding the alternative control, post-emergence herbicides for soybean and corn crops were tested. Control and dry mass of the shoot were analyzed as variables. Resistance factors of resistant biotypes 20.2 and 21.1 were 4.83 and 5.29, respectively, by comparison with the susceptible biotype (11.4). In RS state, there has currently been high selection pressure due to the intensive use of glyphosate against wild poinsettia plants, as the result of the occurrence of biotypes 20.2 and 21.1 which have low levels of resistance to glyphosate and very little control by ALS-inhibiting herbicides. Therefore, an alternative to mitigate the problem is the use of herbicides with different mechanisms of action

Exploring spoken discourse and its neural correlates in women with Alzheimer's disease with low levels of education and socioeconomic status

Purpose: Early impairments in spoken discourse abilities have been identified in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the impact of AD on spoken discourse and the associated neuroanatomical correlates have mainly been studied in populations with higher levels of education, although preliminary evidence seems to indicate that socioeconomic status (SES) and level of education have an impact on spoken discourse. The purpose of this study was to analyze microstructural variables in spoken discourse in people with AD with low-to-middle SES and low level of education and to study their association with gray matter (GM) density. Method: Nine women with AD and 10 matched (age, SES, and education) women without brain injury (WWBI) underwent a neuropsychological assessment, which included two spoken discourse tasks, and structural magnetic resonance imaging. Microstructural variables were extracted from the discourse samples using NILC-Metrix software. Brain density, measured by voxel-based morphometry, was compared between groups and then correlated with the differentiating microstructural variables. Results: The AD group produced a lower diversity of verbal time moods and fewer words and sentences than WWBI but a greater diversity of pronouns, prepositions, and lexical richness. At the neural level, the AD group presented a lower GM density bilaterally in the hippocampus, the inferior temporal gyrus, and the anterior cingulate gyrus. Number of words and sentences produced were associated with GM density in the left parahippocampal gyrus, whereas the diversity of verbal moods was associated with the basal ganglia and the anterior cingulate gyrus bilaterally. Conclusions: The present findings are mainly consistent with previous studies conducted in groups with higher levels of SES and education, but they suggest that atrophy in the left inferior temporal gyrus could be critical in AD in populations with lower levels of SES and education. This research provides evidence on the importance of pursuing further studies including people with various SES and education levels
