    Stated belief and play in normal form games

    Using data on one-shot games, we investigate the assumption that players respond to underlying expectations about their opponent�s behavior. In our laboratory experiments, subjects play a set of 14 two-person 3x3 games, and state first order beliefs about their opponent�s behavior. The sets of responses in the two tasks are largely inconsistent. Rather, we find evidence that the subjects perceive the games differently when they (i) choose actions, and (ii) state beliefs � they appear to pay more attention to the opponent�s incentives when they state beliefs than when they play the games. On average, they fail to best respond to their own stated beliefs in almost half of the games. The inconsistency is confirmed by estimates of a unified statistical model that jointly uses the actions and the belief statements. There, we can control for noise, and formulate a statistical test that rejects consistency. Effects of the belief elicitation procedure on subsequent actions are mostly insignificant

    Beliefs and actions in the trust game: creating instrumental variables to estimate the causal effect

    In many economic contexts, an elusive variable of interest is the agent's expectation about relevant events, e.g. about other agents' behavior. Recent experimental studies as well as surveys have asked participants to state their beliefs explicitly, but little is known about the causal relation between beliefs and other behavioral variables. This paper discusses the possibility of creating exogenous instrumental variables for belief statements, by shifting the probabilities of the relevant events. We conduct trust game experiments where the amount sent back by the second player (trustee) is exogenously varied by a random process, in a way that informs only the �first player (trustor) about the realized variation. The procedure allows detecting causal links from beliefs to actions under plausible assumptions. The IV estimates indicate a signi�ficant causal effect, comparable to the connection between beliefs and actions that is suggested by OLS analyses

    El trabajo presenta una actividad de investigación científica sobre el tema Cama de Faquir, realizada con alumnos de nivel medio (15 y 17 años) de una escuela estatal, y desarrollado en partes entre la universidad y la escuela. Los alumnos proyectaron la cama de faquir, la construyeron, y estudiaron la presión que un globo soporta sobre ella sin explotar. Participaron activamente en el proceso de aprendizaje y se familiarizaron con la investigación científica. Cambiaron sus concepciones inicial simplista por una más próxima a la realidad sobre la naturaleza de la investigación y empezaron a utilizar con más frecuencia términos científicos. El hecho de que el trabajo fuera en su mayoría desarrollado en el ambiente universitario, ayudó a los alumnos a desmitificar la universidad, proporcionándoles nuevas perspectivas en sus vidas profesionales

    Classroom teachers’ perception about physical education and physical activity: A typology

    Introduction: According to the socioecological model teachers may act as facilitators or barriers in a school physical activity (PA) program. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to characterize classroom teachers’ perceptions about Physical Education (PE). Methods: 297 teachers answered a questionnaire about PE past experience, status, aims, and academic benefits of PA. The Multiple Correspondence Analysis was used aiming to identify teachers’ profiles. Results: Dimension 1 combines the view that the PA affects academic achievement (AA) with the idea that PE must be optional or compulsory, but non-examinable. In dimension 2 the biggest difference is between a standard that refers to a relatively neutral position in relation to PA (PE as important for promotion of healthy lifestyles associated with the idea that PA does not affect AA, and PE should be compulsory but non-examinable), as opposed to positions, either in favour (PA benefits AA and PE should be compulsory and examinable) or against PA (PE should be optional). The joint analysis of the two dimensions allowed to identify three distinct patterns of teacher’s perceptions which made possible to build a typology, regardless the cluster they belong to. Considering their personal experience teachers make a misjudgment of PE in schools they attended specially in cluster 3. As for the relation between PA and AA, most teachers say that the PA benefits AA (65% in cluster 1; 96% in cluster 2). In cluster 3, 70% of the teachers say that PA impairs AA. Conclusions: These results support the importance of the earliest good experiences in PE, in generating positive attitudes towards PE.     Anti-Islanding Techniques for Integration of Inverter-Based Distributed Energy Resources to the Electric Power System

    The emergence of microgrids and the increasing adoption of Distributed Generation Systems (DGS) have created an opportunity to replace traditional fossil fuels with renewable resources. Such a shift poses security and power quality challenges that must be addressed by academics and industrial research paradigms. Unintentional islanding is an important security concern, as it can result in power quality degradation, electrical hazards, and equipment damage. To address this problem and find efficient solutions, many anti-islanding techniques to detect and eliminate the phenomenon can be found in the specialized literature. These solutions can be classified as passive, active, remote, hybrid, or based on machine learning and signal processing techniques. In this context, this paper provides a comprehensive review of existing anti-islanding methods, highlighting their importance in preventing dangerous situations. The review includes a detailed analysis of the advantages and limitations found for each method, as well as its suitability for practical applications. The goal is to provide a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the field of distributed power systems, enabling them to choose the most appropriate anti-islanding method for their specific needs. Overall, this paper aims to address the challenges posed by unintentional islanding and promote the adoption of renewable energy resources for a more sustainable future.© 2024 The Authors.     Hierarchical Spatial Organization of Geographical Networks

    In this work we propose the use of a hirarchical extension of the polygonality index as a means to characterize and model geographical networks: each node is associated with the spatial position of the nodes, while the edges of the network are defined by progressive connectivity adjacencies. Through the analysis of such networks, while relating its topological and geometrical properties, it is possible to obtain important indications about the development dynamics of the networks under analysis.     Proposal of a new real-time cooperative challenge in mobile robotics

    In this paper it is presented a new robot competition that is going to be included in Robotica 2011, the main Robotics Portuguese Competition. The robot competition takes place in an emulated factory plant, where Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) must cooperate to perform tasks. To accomplish their goals the AGVs must deal with localization, navigation, scheduling and cooperation problems, that must be solved autonomously. One option of prototyping the AGVs is the use of the Lego Mindstorms NXT technology. The presented example can play an important role in education due to the inherent multi-disciplinary concepts that are involved, motivating students to technological areas. It also plays an important role in research and development, because it is expected that the outcomes that will emerge here, will later be transfered to other application areas, such as service robots and manufacturing

    Inverted pendulum virtual control laboratory

    This paper describes a tool for interactive learning that can be used to improve control systems design. The developed system is ready to use and allows testing different control methods. It can be used by students for problem solving and individual learning. The virtual control laboratory was implemented as a teaching aid during lectures on control systems. As there is no need to do any special programming or debugging, the students can focus on the control items. Classical control methods such as PID and State-Space approaches are available and gains can be tuned. A friendly appearance based on openGL 3D shows a simulation of the real word: A cart with an inverted pendulum is "bumped" with a force. The dynamic equations of motion for the control system are linearized assuming that the pendulum does not move more than a few degrees away from the vertical allowing to apply linear control methods.
