CONCEPTUALIZATION OF BODY IMAGE AND EATING DISORDERS AMONG SOUTH ASIAN AMERICAN WOMEN: A QUALITATIVE INVESTIGATION

    Get PDF
Though it is known that eating disorders (EDs) affect individuals of all racial/ethnic backgrounds (Cheng, Perko, Fuller-Marashi, Gau, & Stice, 2019), people of color tend to be overlooked in the ED literature. South Asian Americans, a specific subset of individuals traditionally categorized within the larger umbrella group of “Asians,” have been notoriously neglected in both the broader mental health literature, and in the ED literature (Inman, Devdas, Spektor, & Pendse, 2014; Iyer & Haslam, 2003, 2006). Currently, very little information exists on the etiology and presentation of EDs amongst South Asian communities. Even less is known about culturally-specific barriers to treatment-seeking for this population. To begin to address these issues, this study used focus group methodology with South Asian American women to identify salient themes. Thematic analysis revealed several key themes for body image and EDs, as well as perceived barriers and facilitators of ED treatment-seeking behavior for this group. Notably, South Asian American women are subjected to multiple appearance ideals, experience unique cultural stressors related to living in the United States, and perceive relatively high expectations and pressures from multiple social domains, including parents and community members. Both generalized and social stigma about mental health, parents’ mental health concerns, lack of knowledge about EDs, and healthcare providers’ biases were important barriers to treatment-seeking. To address these obstacles, participants recommended that clinicians facilitate intergenerational conversations about mental health, create ED psychoeducational health campaigns, and train providers in culturally-sensitive practices for detecting and treating mental health and ED concerns. Findings can inform the assessment, prevention, and treatment of EDs via the development of a culturally-sensitive ED assessment measure designed specifically for South Asian American women

Ethical business practices are expected & most commonly miss-understood that the service provider must have managed the things in the ethical way. Where as in modern mgmt. it is taken for granted that Ethics are only responsibility of a particular person/'s in an organization. One very interesting story of 4 Friends namely ANYBODY, SOMEBODY, NOBODY, and EVERYBODY assigned ethical job where EVERYBODY  expect SOMEBODY will manage/ perform & in the process NOBODY cares to question ANYBODY. At the end NOBODY did the job & EVERYBODY blamed SOMEBODY is responsible for the ignorance. But ANYBODY could do the job & not alone SOMEBODY was responsible EVERYBODY was party to the ignorant act

An Exploration of Racial/Ethnic Differences in the Association between Perfectionism and Disordered Eating in College Students

    Get PDF
Perfectionism is a robust risk factor for eating disorders (EDs). Although individually-oriented dimensions of perfectionism are strongly related to eating pathology, less is known about the contribution of parent-oriented dimensions, specifically parental expectations (PE) and parental criticisms (PC). Further, few studies have investigated these effects within racially/ethnically diverse samples. However, PE and PC might be particularly relevant to eating pathology among certain cultural groups, such as those from collectivistic and interdependent societies. This study examined associations among PE, PC, and ED symptoms across racial/ethnic groups. Undergraduates (N=706; 74.8% Female; 48% White, 19.8% Black, 7.1% Latinx, 16% Asian, 9.1% multiracial) completed online surveys assessing perfectionism and ED symptoms. Multiple and logistic regressions examined the association between parent-oriented perfectionism, global eating pathology, loss-of-control (LOC) eating, purging behaviors, and ED risk status (EDE-Q global \u3c 4.0). Analyses were conducted by racial/ethnic group, controlling for gender. Both PE and PC were related to greater ED pathology in students identifying as White (pp=.03), Asian (p=.02), and multiracial (pp=.19). Higher PC was related to a greater likelihood of endorsing LOC eating in White (p=.004) and Black students (p=.05) and purging behaviors in White (p=.004), Asian (p=.04), and multiracial students (p=.03). Greater PC was also associated with ED risk in Asian (p=.03) and multiracial participants (p=.01). Findings indicate that the relations between specific aspects of parent-oriented perfectionism differ among cultural groups and are associated with ED symptoms in college students. PC seemed more relevant to ED pathology than did PE overall. Findings suggest that parent-oriented perfectionism, particularly PC, might be important to include in clinical assessment and treatment with students at-risk of EDs.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1039/thumbnail.jp

ANALYZING WEB LOGS OF AN ASTROLOGICAL WEBSITE USING KEY INFLUENCERS

    Get PDF
With the growth of Internet, websites have become a dynamic tool in the market for every business to both acquire and service their customers. Online presence through websites has given them a global and wider reach. Good design and well management are the two key aspects of the effective website to catch the attention of visitors. Nowadays, the analysis and behavior of website visitors can be used to convert them into customers and serve them in a better way. This can be carried out on the weblogs which are generated as a result of user’s access to a website. This paper aims to study the log files of an astrological website. An astrological website has not gained much attention in the internet community as people prefer going to the astrologers in person to resolve their problems. The log files of an astrology website were taken, preprocessed and analyzed using Analyze Key Influencers technique a feature of Microsoft SQL Server Data Mining Add-ins for Microsoft Office 2007. The information obtained can be used to enhance the effectiveness of the website

A comparative review of intra-operative hemodynamic changes in patients undergoing vaginal surgeries using tumescent anaesthesia vs conventional techniques

Background: The objective was to assess intra-operative hemodynamic changes in patients undergoing vaginal surgeries using tumescent anaesthesia vs conventional techniques. Methods: Study was carried out on 200 patients attending the Obst. & Gynae. Dept. of S.N. Medical College, Agra. According to randomization they were divided into 2 groups: group-a: include 100 patients undergoing vaginal surgery using conventional techniques and group-b: include 100 patients undergoing vaginal surgery using tumescent anaesthesia (25 mol of 2% lignocaine and .5 ml eg. Adrenaline (1:1000 conc.) ease and duration of surgery, blood loss, hemodynamic changes during surgery were recorded and comparison drawn and analysed by statistical analysis. Results: In our study, time required for completion of surgery in group-a was 21-35 min as in group-b it was 36-50 min. More number of cases had blood loss 100 ml (90%0. No significant change in mean blood pressure and heart rate between both groups (p>0.05).Conclusion: Tumescent anaesthesia is on safe approach which reduces time of surgery and blood loss during surgery with no significant changes in haemodynamic variables

Tubo-ovarain abscess in patient with ovarian endometriosis

    Get PDF
Tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) is a sequela of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) found in 15-34% of patients, is comprised of an infectious, inflammatory complex encompassing the fallopian tube and ovary. We are presenting a case of TOA with endometriosis in a patient who underwent total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Histopathological findings were compatible with endometriosis with xanthogranulomatous salpingitis and oophoritis. In our patient there was no history of any chronic infection, gynecological procedures or intra uterine device and single partner. The purpose of this case is to make aware of this condition and requirement of further studies to investigate the risk of TOA in patients with endometriosis to find out the exact cause to prevent unnecessary surgery at later stage
