Microbial Production of Ethanol From Sludge Derived From an Urban Wastewater Treatment Plant

A collection of lipase-producing microorganisms was isolated from sludge derived from an urban wastewater treatment plant. The microorganisms with the highest levels of lipase activity were selected in order to use triglycerides present in the sludge effectively and were then transformed with pdc:adhB genes for the production of ethanol. The transgenic strains showed high growth rates in diluted sludge and produced lipase protein in order to utilize fat present in the sludge, which provides an abundant source of carbon. Using sludge derived from treated wastewater as nutrient source, ethanol was produced by certain transgenic species belonging to the genera Proteus. Different forms of sludge were tested for maximal ethanol production, with dehydrated sludge being found to produce the best performance. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (projects CTM2009-09270 and CTM2017-84332-R), the Andalusian regional government (project P08-RNM-04180) and ESAMUR and CADAGUA, S.A., involved in sanitation and wastewater treatment in the Murcia region (contract 4304-00)

Large-signal model of 2DFETs: compact modeling of terminal charges and intrinsic capacitances

We present a physics-based circuit-compatible model for double-gated two-dimensional semiconductor based field effect transistors, which provides explicit expressions for the drain current, terminal charges and intrinsic capacitances. The drain current model is based on the drift-diffusion mechanism for the carrier transport and considers Fermi-Dirac statistics coupled with an appropriate field-effect approach. The terminal charge and intrinsic capacitance models are calculated adopting a Ward-Dutton linear charge partition scheme that guarantees charge-conservation. It has been implemented in Verilog-A to make it compatible with standard circuit simulators. In order to benchmark the proposed modeling framework we also present experimental DC and high-frequency measurements of a purposely fabricated monolayer MoS2 FET showing excellent agreement between the model and the experiment and thus demonstrating the capabilities of the combined approach to predict the performance of 2DFETs.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

This study is focused on the importance of implementing cooperative learning strategies for developing fluency of the English language on 9th grade students at Guillermo Cano National Institute. Therefore researchers formulated two main questions based on research objectives to guide it: What type of cooperative learning strategies should be applied for students to develop fluency in the English class? How do cooperative learning strategies contribute to develop the students´ fluency? This research follows a qualitative design and aims at presenting new strategies that will be useful for English teachers and productive for students. We identified which strategies are the most effective in the English class and can be applied by English teacher in Nicaraguan classrooms. Firstly, students of 9th grade can develop better communication through fluency with the implementation of cooperative learning in the learning process. Secondly, students' performance improved significantly and they developed good attitude toward learning English via cooperative learning. Thirdly, when using cooperative learning students are motivated and less reluctant. Therefore, this study recommends the adoption of cooperative learning as a strategy fluency development in English Learning speaking in particular. Key words: fluency, cooperative learning and strategies

Papez circuit gray matter and episodic memory in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia are two different diseases recognized to overlap at clinical, pathological and genetic characteristics. Both conditions are traditionally known for relative sparing of episodic memory. However, recent studies have disputed that with the report of patients presenting with marked episodic memory impairment. Besides that, structural and functional changes in temporal lobe regions responsible for episodic memory processing are often detected in neuroimaging studies of both conditions. In this study, we investigated the gray matter features associated with the Papez circuit in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia and healthy controls to further explore similarities and differences between the two conditions. Our non-demented amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients showed no episodic memory deficits measured by a short-term delayed recall test while no changes in gray matter of the Papez circuit were found. Compared with the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis group, the behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia group had lower performance on the short-term delayed recall test and marked atrophy in gray matter of the Papez circuit. Bilateral atrophy of entorhinal cortex and mammillary bodies distinguished behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients as well as atrophy in left cingulate, left hippocampus and right parahippocampal gyrus. Taken together, our results suggest that sub-regions of the Papez circuit could be differently affected in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia

Ciberseguridad influencia en el turismo cubano

Throughout history, Cuba has constantly been the victim of all kinds of attacks against national security. Among them, it is important to mention cyberattacks, which have put countless Cuban entities at risk. One of the most vulnerable sectors in terms of cybersecurity is the tourism sector, this is because, within it, connectivity and personal or confidential data play a crucial role in processes such as: reservations, purchases, accommodation, collection of customer information. For all the above, the main objective of this work is the study of techniques that allow raising the levels of cybersecurity in the Cuban tourism sector through the logical-deductive research method. The results are a series of practices that will contribute to Cuba having a system of action against cyber threats, based on risk assessment, which allow mitigating cyberattacks in companies in the tourism sector.
